1st comment, you shouldnt have the beardie on sand.. you need a diff substrate like tile (trims their nails naturally) newspaper, or paper towel.. They injest the sand, which causes impaction which could lead to death..
2nd, You also shouldnt feed a beardie mice.. Can you? yes.. Would they survive without them? yes.. They are much harder to digest, and they would do MUCH better without them... Good staples are superworms, Crickets, Dubia roaches...
@MsCivvy what you ona bout? the lizard is fine on the sand? you go to the shops and they say to buy it... n this one looks fine. nice and healthy so duno whats so bad about what hes doing?:S
@ashleighbourne yes the shops say to buy it but they're not experts are they? I'm from Australia where these beautiful animals originated from and before you jump to conclusions, I'm no expert either. But, I have a beardie and my local breeder who's also a friend of mine, is. He's been breeding them since before you were even born and hates when people think they're doing the right thing which somewhere down the track ends up killing their pets. I hope you take this into consideration. Thanks.
@GabbyJibblit fair enough, everyone is entitled to their own opinion anyway:) i want to get one but to be honest i dont really know what im doing sooo:) and i wasnt having ago or anything:)
@ashleighbourne Most of the shops you go into, are a bunch of young people working there, with no training. Yes, this one does LOOK healthy, but you cant see whats going on on the inside...
Alot of people have their beardies on sand, because they dont know any better.. Anytime I see a video like this, I will post my thoughts, for the sake of the animal.. Hopefully the owner listens..
@MsCivvy alright chill out, i was just giving my opinion as i am entitled to it, just like you are to yours, but to be honest going through most of these videos every single bearded dragon is on sand, and they seem to be nice and healthy, and yeah the people in the shops are a bunch of kids that haven't been trained but neither have you?.
@ashleighbourne Why are you telling me to chill out? lol.. I was calm and respectful with my response..
Alot of ppl havent done the research to know that sand isnt recommended for bearded dragons.. I have.. I am a member of a group with breeders, and beardie Lovers. I'm not trying to fight, I'm trying to help educate. for the sake of the animal. When i first started, I didnt KNOW you shouldnt use sand.. I found out thru research and asking questions
@MsCivvy cos you do need to chill out, its still an opinion though either way, and not being funny you are probs miles older than me you dont need to be throwing like 100 "facts" about lizards to me, id buy i book if i really wanted to know, but most vids on here the animals are fine, so in my OPINION its fine...
@ashleighbourne I did mention that having a beardie on sand can lead to impaction, which can lead to death right? its not an opinion, its a fact. So I hope if you DO get one (they are great pets!) you do some research before hand.
Watch them when they hunt on sand, it gets in their mouth with every bite.. They explore with their tongues.
Make your self a sandwhich and lay it on the sand then take a bite.. tell me how good that tastes?
@MrDupelidoo I disagree with the sand.. Adults can get impacted just as easy as babies. granted, yes, they are better at catching their food. less clumsey but, no matter how good they are, they still ingest some sand.. which is bad for them, it can kill them...
And yes, alot of people give them pinkies as a treat. Beardies dont need them, they dont have much benefit to the beardies. so why not give them a treat thats better for them? :) My beardie gets treated with HornWorms
@MrDupelidoo Ive been told the best practice for sand, is to only provide it to gravid females. They like to dig when they are getting ready to lay. :)
@MsCivvy actually it depends on the sand, much reptile sand has been reformulated to just dissolve into calcium if accidentally ingested, but yes its better to feed out of a bowl or dish. and what do you think beardies eat in the wild? most people just dont feed them mice because they dont want to or are squeemish, but it is in no way harmful.
@EpithalamionJinx We will have to agree to disagree :) Ive been told by my vet and numerous breeders that any type of sand is a no no.. Where beardies are from, they live on a hard packed clay. not sand.
And same goes for the pinkies, do people feed them? sure.. Can beardies suvive without them, mos def :) They are much harder to digest and could lead to problems.. so I will stick with HornWorms as treats. My Guy LOVES them.
@MsCivvy Listen you retard, in the wild what do you think beardies walk and live on? also, what do you think they feed on? they eat anything in the wild so if YOU wanna go baby the fuck out of your pussy ass pets then go ahead. this owner is doing the right thing other than the fact that the sand is pretty filthy.
@BleedingOath Listen TROLL, how about you do YOUR research before you run your mouth. Beardies originate from Australia, they dont live on SAND, they live on HARD PACKED CLAY, it's like cement with a powdery clay dust on top. not sand. and pinkies and mice all together while high in calcium, are super high in fat. a pinkie can be given once a month fo gravid females to assist in natural calcium absorption. but otherwise should never be fed...
@MrRobertoHead Are you kidding me? Does your beardie live in the wild? NO.. Beardies probably dont have as big a life span if they are in the wild.. they probably get eaten by bigger predetors, DOES THAT MEAN YOU PUT THEM OUT?! NO.. you try to keep your PET safe and healthy. Dont take my advice, THATS FINE. but dont be surprised when your PET doesnt live as long as he could.
Peoples stupidity blows my mind. I feel bad for your animals.
@MsCivvy So basically you are saying every bearded dragon that lives in the wild is going to die? Their natural habitat is sand so I don't think that would be a problem. And as far as feeding them mice, yes it's not the best thing for them, but pinky mice aren't as developed as regular mice, so their bones and stuff are much easier to digest. Still don't give them pinkies all the time though. The odd time is fine
@420Ferlito Nope, what I said, (in the comments) is your beardie could live LONGER without the risk of impaction. Beardies being on sand, doesnt guarentee death, but it does up their chances.. Plus, who likes eating sand? Beardies originate from Australia, they dont live on SAND, they live on HARD PACKED CLAY, it's like cement with a powdery clay dust on top. not sand.
@420Ferlito Second point, You are correct, their bones are not developed, easier to digest, however (Im just gona copy and paste what I said in a previous comment) and pinkies and mice all together while high in calcium, are super high in fat. a pinkie can be given once a month fo gravid females to assist in natural calcium absorption. but otherwise should never be fed...
@bigtibseh there great pets i used to have one he was sweet they like attention really just make sure dont leave them alone for to long or they wont be used to the attention
been so long since i've seen a bearded dragon eat! So cool. :D our old dragon lizzie, not a very clever name, she loveddd "can-o-crickets" for some reason and would go nutso for em. :)
@froglegslove12 i dont see how that makes anyone stupid... ive never disected a mouse before and i have no clue what there insides look like so at first glance i would say that is poop
Question Flavorless is how often can you feed pinkies to bearded dragon. I fed mine the other day first time. The pet store says its not feed them pinkies. Im sure in the wild theyll anyways when they come accross pinkies
@DictatorBean - its natural selection. the fittest animal dominate over the weaker ones and eliminate their uselessness from the superior gene pool. the animal kingdom is totally meant for this. and, even if i was about to kill an animal, or the animal eating me for instance, i couldnt complain, because that is life: survival of the fittest
@pigswithbeards pet shops sell frozen mice that haven't died kicking and screaming. it doesn't take that much to thaw/warm them up and dangle one from tweezers.
I'm certain it's already been said, but watch when feeding it! If you put food on that dirt, the food will keep picking it up and eventually the dragon may have a buildup, causing constipation or worse!
I have no problem with feeding DEAD mice to pets who need them (eg. snakes or monitor lizards). But feeding them to a beardie can cause serious health issues as the amount of protein will cause the body to grow faster than the bones can cope with and the result will be metabolic bone disease as the bones are not strong enough to support the body. Feeding live mice is cruel as you make them needlessly suffer and illegal in the UK under the animal welfare act. hope u get fined!

Jeez how horrible. I'm glad cruelty like that is illegal here in Finland. You must be a twisted person to want to feed your pet with living mice.

@DictatorBean If you're getting all pissed at this then how do you think a cow feels when he sees you eat his brother in a hamburger :o
