  • that is very, VERY impressive. I wish I could paint this well...

  • This is really good stuff. A real gem

  • @idrawgirls

Could you explain how you create that sort of radiant glow effect? The same kind of thing you did here with the eye slots. Thank you. :)

  • boom!

  • Hey can you send me some recommendations on some good tablets i cant do non digital any longer just not that good

  • @danjup1 Wacom :)

  • @danjup1 Yep Wacom

  • how do you blend the colours around?

  • @92blackops Opacity and soft round brush will do. Many people have different technique, but mine are mainly brushes because old habit from oil painting. In oil, there is not much option but brushes and paint over.

  • Buff, i love it dude!

  • Very beautiful work.

  • HOLY SHIT TWO MAU5E5

  • xia plz i want to ask about something ... am good in drawing concept art and i have the talent should i be academic to work in this business? i mean do companies hire academic ppl only even there are ppl that can draw better but not academic ?

  • @G0ldenM0nkey All they want to see first is your portfolio. Your diploma meant nothing but a piece of paper. Show them what you can do, that is all there is. I have a degree in Finance, not art. Peace! ;-)

  • @idrawgirls

thanks xia . you are my hero :)

  • @idrawgirls you really inspire me, I am fresh out of college and am hoping to do the same, I have a degree in programming haha

  • It seems like your approach is to start generally rough with large brushes and basically work down to smaller brushes a tighten it up alittle, but still leaving some of the bold stokes in.

  • @ryofulance Yep, that's just what I prefer to do. Big strokes...cover lots of space and just like in oil painting. Then you can always go back in and refine more. But since it is just a speed painting, it's good enough as a rough comp study. Just enough. ;-)

  • Where did you learn to do computer artwork? Or how? Did you copy other pictures until you could do it without picture help? Cause thats what i'm doing now and I would like to know if it's right ;3

  • @AsaTellurium I was good at traditional drawing and painting before I get into computer. Mostly I learn it from work for the last 7-10 yrs.

  • I realy like your videos. The best painting videos on youtube IMO! I have a question on your brushes. I visit your homepage and notice that you use "Lumograph Drawing Pencils Sketch Set" kost 12$. Is it worth the money for a guy who are new on paiting or should i just pratice on the original in photoshop ? / Rickard

  • @finndahl You can just buy any pencil at art store. I normally use 2B-5B range, mostly 3B. Graphite stick, compress charcoal and vine charcoal are also good to try. Most importantly, practice. Peace!

  • do you offer online courses or maybe teach in a digital art school that we could admit to??

  • @garrette2010 Go to my website, then you will find out.

  • hi Xia, i wanted to ask u something. You say that you can create any beautiful painting using only a regular soft or a hard brush. Well, when can we use some cool custom brushes for metal or glass or clouds or whatever? do we use it after we finish the whole painting with the regular brushes, just as an after effect? Also, you mentioned that there are soft, hard and lost edges. Well, what exactly is a lost edge?

  • @garrette2010 I said that because I want people to focus on principle. Shapes, value, and edges. They are a lot more important than any fancy brush you could find. Because understand those thing will make your painting shine.

  • i did a mask concept speed painting video and i would like it if anybody would tell me how i could improve, i only have two videos so just look for the newest one

  • Thanx for your vids mate. This one especially. It helped me alot. It is a very good thing that you post those free vids not only for beginners but also for experianced artists.

  • @Warningsondeafears No problem, glad it can be useful. ;-)

  • do you end up painting over the original sketch lines on the same layer, or on a new one? i notice the lines disappearing, and i can't see if you're switching layers while you're doing the value and the detail.

it looks like you use the linework layer, so is the value layer used only near the start? sorry if this was asked before. :x

  • @3lit3gn0m3 Do you want a line art or do you want a painting? You seem confused and cloudy in your vision.

  • Hi Xia, I justt wanted to ask you (if it is possible) when someone ask you a question, for you to post the answer right here where everybody could see the question and the respective answer, because when you send the answer to the personal mail of the person who made the question, all other people who had the same doubt will not have to make the same question again, anyway....thanks for sharing your knowledge, you inspire me a lot

  • @cristosalgado Good idea, but it is too long and only 20% of viewers read if any. Do you ever notice on all the videos I have, people still ask what program do I use even though the answer is just on the comment right before that. I am used to it. Just ask, then I will PM. I know a lot of ppl would just go to the blog and read it without having to ask, save me a lot of trouble. It is just right there in front of you. I said it in the beginning of the video everytime. ;-)

  • Quick question, when you applied color to the tone, did you paint directly on the tone with low opacity brushes or did you use an overlay layer?

  • thanks a lot, this video is i think the best that showed me how to start with painting, coloring and these things... nice work, rly thx

  • If you could speak polish ... :(

  • wondering if you have deviant art gallery cause once i saw alot of your stuff in a gallery but wasn't sure if it was you.

  • Great stuff!!! What size canvas and res do you start with?

Do you keep in mind if you need to refine a painting to a higher size or res? or do you just repaint at a higher level using the painting as a under painting?

  • what did you mean by " once you have auto value down , the color will be alot easier " ? oh and nice work there !

  • @Seiferzed Check your inbox.

  • Question: Im not entirely sure what overly does to an image, ive seen the effect but im still not sure what useful ness it serves. Or how you come to learn an effective way of using the mode.

  • @leatopia Done!

  • Awesome painting!

The scetch-like brush you are using i find very interesting and I am just wondering what brush setting are you using for that brush? I went to art school and got the drawing skills but havent been able to create the perfect brush for that kind of work on photoshop yet. Hope you can help me with this.

  • @FrostBird89 done!

  • That's hot..!

  • what is the multiply layer good for?

  • Very cool.

The alien's mouth looks a bit like Predator.

    It's still awesome though

  • It'd be cool if you could upload all the custom brushes you have. I have no idea what kind of brushes I'd look for or what to call them.

  • @zombiefriend there are lots of brush packs available on the net. search for stuff like blur's good brushes or daarken's brushes. it's also very easy to make your own. I would suggest using other downloads early on and eventually making your own once you have an understanding of how you work, hope that helped :)

  • @Malicious2094 That really helps. Thanks a lot. :)

  • this is awesome! :D

  • yeah u deserve sooo much more attention.

  • At wich point do you seperate Speed Painting from Concept Art?

  • @CiliosX concept art is the term given to the concept for certain things like characters or environments. speed painting is just an exercise that lets you get ideas down quickly better than a thumbnail or quick sketch and if you like what you see you can keep working on it

  • @Malicious2094 I see , but still is there a line that defines wether a piece is a speed painting or concept art?

I'm asking because about a month ago I saw a DVD at web site that it was called "From Speed Painting to Concept Art" and it got me thinking.

  • @CiliosX Speedpainting is usually done in one sitting within 30mins - 2 hours. It actually derive from Raw "Alla prima" method of traditional fine artists in life painting session. Concept art has no time limited, it is done when you called it done.

  • Good shit man.

  • it is special :]

  • coool matey

    finaly coming with new stuff

  • can i ask what size resolution you work in? how large is the image dimension?

  • the limit is actually 15 minutes now, so going a bit over 10 is fine.

  • kool

  • Amazing like always.

  • thanks for the tut. had a question though. Do you have any experience with bamboo tablets? I don't have a intuos (will get soon) but how much of a difference is there when it comes to how responsive the intuos is compared to bamboo? I use bamboo right now and it works alright but it isn't that great

  • @Malicious2094 Shouldn't make much different, it is just smaller. It should be like intuo 2 or 3, I used all of them. They don't make much different to me personally.

  • @idrawgirls oh ok. That's good to know cause I don't really have money to waste, thanks again

  • @idrawgirls hey i was wondering what type of software do you use.. sorry if this pisses u off but i nevr really got the chance to ask you

  • @Malicious2094 using a bamboo vs a intous makes a world of difference i purchased a bamboo first but noticed its lack of responsiveness when drawing its more so geared for kids i'd say, definitely purchase a intous (intous4) or cintiq if your serious about digital drawing =)

  • @crimsondragon18 yeah I'm saving up for one, hopefully will have it before summer. makes me excited to know that I'll be able to do better, thanks

  • @Malicious2094 get a cintiq 21ux :-P

  • @dOnnOnOthin send me $2000 :)

  • @Malicious2094 Hahha!! if only i had some myself XD

  • when your adding shadows are using multiply on the brush or the layer?

  • @macjsus Mostly layer, easier to manage. After 3/4 of the process, I barely use any layer effect anymore, mostly normal.

  • I watch you on DA and YT, and you deserve more views!

  • @Marinemiketobe Thanks, it is what it is. Tell Google ;-)

  • @idrawgirls ever think about getting some SEO work done? probably help a lot. SEO isn't too hard either.
