  • Flip-disc is the name of this display technology.

It was a Canadaian invention from the '50s

The discs / segments have a magnet and the coil behind will either attract or repel the disc causing it to either show it's black side or show it's coloured side depending on the polarity applied to the coil.

A lot of bus systems use this for route display and airports.

Also, one nice thing is the display consumes no power except for when updating.

  • @bobbie4 thanks for the info- now to go and make some myself! ^^!

  • Wahhaha this is actually pretty cool !

    Only it's moving VERY slow...

  • cool :D but expensive... )=

  • I wish I could find a supplier for digits like that. I can find larger LED digits, but electro-mechanical ones are almost impossible for "normal people" to find.

  • sorry.. no idea where to get them..

  • since I posted that comment, I did find a supplier in the US. But they're expensive. Each digit costs $100 for 23cm tall digits.

  • whooa thts quite a lot jus for tht. but thn if its american its ought to be expensive.. may be if u can find some south asian or chinese supplier it will be much cheaper

  • It's one of the few american-invented, american-made products. Unfortunately, I'm stuck. hehe

  • oh its american invention hmm.. its not one of few coz many product ideas come frmo ther.

  • @beartard1 they don't make that kind of clock or timer anymore they now use led light bulbs

  • thomas, they're still produced. They even have huge, dot-matrix displays like that made of hundreds of little mechanical dots the flip over. You just can't buy them unless you're a corporation or have a huge bank account. ;)

  • oh i didn't know that thanks

  • yeah. nice.
