  • what kind of pedal can i use to record multiple loops as easy as this guy does it?!@!@!@!

  • @thechileano

This guy and Ian Williams both used an Akai Headrush (I think Ian used the E1, this is an E2 but they're virtually the same). There are loop pedals with more features out there, though.

  • @TheCHUD Thanks Broham.

  • Did you forget the snare stand? Haha!

  • i really enjoy world class listening problem actually. however, it is at their live performances that you can begin to see a bit of a lack in energy in comparison to the original Don Caballero... it almost seems to me like Damon is simply going through the motions, and the other guys are just sort of struggling to keep up with him... just my two cents. Still an outstanding performance; im always a DonCab fan

  • i think this is don cabs best song, perhaps tied with don caballero 3

  • it takes two guys to cover one ian williams part.

  • i love the original version, but i love what they did to make it their new style. the new loop line sounds orgasmic.

  • nothing like playing w/ a killer drummer!

  • First time I've heard of these guys, but as a musician I can say this is not your average rock tune - and not easy to pull off live. Thumbs up, man, they are good.....

  • @TaipeiDawg yeah, i am a musician too, and this is different than, er, most songs i've heard. :braaap:

  • Dude, I think they pulled it off fantastically. That would be a hard ass song to pick it up the way they did. Quit living in the past guys, this is Don Cab now, and they rock.

  • Despite the fact the purists will want me hung from the tallest tree for saying this, I actually prefer the material from WCLP to all the previous records. I guess I am a total cunt who enjoys a tune.

  • I don't think anyone could fault you for that, considering there are people out there who listen to stuff much worse than anything Don Cab could ever do. You like what you like.

  • Fritzcunt, first of all nice name.

Second, you're not the only one out there who yields to World Class Listening Problem. But I do have to say that I'm between that and What Burns Never Returns.

  • Don Cab Rules

  • this is a great tune from "American Don", Don Cab`s 2000 album. The harmony change in the middle of the song is simply fantastic!

But these new guitar player/s really suck. They are a very poor imitation of Banfield & Williams. It`s a shame... (how the fuck are you going to copy Ian`s style? And it`s not about the technique, it about the feel & the groove.)

Anyway, Damon Che is a fantastic drummer! Good to see him touring again...

  • Dude, give these men some credit. The technicality of this music is extremely high. Jason and Gene have played a wonderful rendition of this song! Ian Williams is a artist in his own right, and I'm sorry to see he and Damon at odds, but I'm happy that this music is still being played. It's so unique and rare! A real treasure for anyone who appreciates layered rhythym and guitar melody.

  • I think that this song is fantastic, one of the best examples of the late Don Cab (Trio!). But this version doesn`t come even closer to what should be!

The "new" Don Cab tunes are OK, and the guitar players did a fine job there. But if you wanna play "afro pop", play it well or don`t do it at all!

Happy that this music is still being played? Well, yes... But some could say the same about Queen touring with Paul Rodgers! (!!??)

Anyway, it`s not THAT bad. Don Cab still rocks!

  • 5 months too late, but id like to point out that theyre playing it perfectly, its just the cameraman is recording on the right hand side so the mixing is a little off

  • Perfectly? Compared to what? You might listen to the album version another time...

Obviously, it`s a pre-version of the song. For example, the studio take is about 7:30 long. Listen to each segment, then listen to this live take. And then you can check out some bootlegs from early 2000 (the last "trio" tour). You`ll find the full version of the song in those bootlegs.

Like I said before: Great performance, but sort of incomplete if you compare it with later gigs and the album take.

  • the album version is pretty lax as it is you know. american don has been about weaving textures, not about mathematical tightness, as you probably know they always hated being called math rock. im not sure the length of the song is high priority in any stretch of the measure

  • also please stop being a jerk ):

  • You wouldn`t have "What burns..." or "American Don" without mathematical precision. The music (and the execution of the instruments) is subject to numbers & bars. Miss one bar, and it won`t fit. The textures are a product of calculations, not viceversa.

It`s not "math rock" (ugly term!). I wouldn`t call it "Rock" either. Just smart musicians with a high degree of curiosity (specially Ian). The roots of this music can be found in contemporanean composers like Reich, Glass or Xenakis.

  • i think you're singing their praises more than theyd like you to on this record. would you have really hated using the term math-rock if they didnt want to be called it themselves? besides, che's drumming is mostly improvisational and the album is supposed to be intentionally jam-based to allow for discrepancies in sound and to make different minimalist soundscapes, it was more of an idea rather than an "album" hence why it is so different to the other albums.

  • 1

I have my own voice to speak. I explained my point about the words "rock" and "math" in relation with Don Cab on the previous post. Fuck "rock"! (Actually, one member of "Chavez" came out with a good explanation-joke about "mathrock"!)

"More an idea than an album"? Don`t agree there. What Che does, it`s Che`s choice. Because of his amazing skills, he can improvise above insane time meters! But the guitars & bass are other story. And this has nothing to do with the post-Ian version!

  • All Don Cab albums are different form each other! But `98 & `00 discs really go beyond. That`s one of the causes between the Ian-Damon fallout. Che wanted to keep on drumming with a "heavy-rock" beat (frozen motionless in past ideas. Bad for a musician`s development!), and Ian... Well, check out Battles!

Its a declaration of principles. Move forwards! Leave when it gets too comfortable. But Che is going backwards these days. Well, if that makes him happy...

  • i also agree...
