This music is magical as if formed around the same time the first star came to life in our galaxy and as been alive ever since kinda rolling and meandering along. It is the music and her voice combined in this song that makes it special. There is not any other music out there that I know of like this. Jethro Tull has done a little bit kinda like this. That is the only other I know of.
All I want is someone to lay in the ground with me at night to watch the stars while listening the whole album Ys! That would be the most beautiful 56min ever!
"You stopped by,I was all alive. In my doorway we shucked and jived"
I melt at this quote.Shucked-to peel off or remove clothing.Jive is to engage in meaningless talk.I interpreted it that way, considering how human her music feels. Its just a matter of throwing yourself into the "moving fire" :)
This is especially good to hear outdoors, just as I'm doing now, it makes the world around you seem to brim with magic. Its a southern Saturday afternoon, summer's over, its an easy warm temperture, stray cats are curled around my feet, stuffed & sleepy, everything's bright yellow except for the shadows cast by the rose bushes in the garden I'm in. Everyone's left for the day but me, I'm here on my oak porch in the breeze smelling fresh cut grass, writing stories and only her sound in my ears.
It is really interesting listening at this, it looks like those poems with syllables without a meaning of words but with a meaning in sound. I think this it is a metasong, I mean a song inside a song. My respect to a truly artist.
@LyddieTheJester I hadn't thought of that at all before but I totally see Bjork now that you mentioned it. At least for this work, she's still experimenting so she can be seen sporting a different sound here and there sometimes. For instance The Sprout and the Bean could sound more like Stina Nordenstam.
I get all excited because I know what's coming at 5:35 - 5:56, and then at 5:57 I get chills every time. And from then until 8:10 is, I think, my favorite part of any of her songs.
"Hold on, hold on... hold your horses back from the fickle dawn. i have got some business out of the edge of town; candy weighing both of my pockets down, till i can hardly stay afloat from weight of them, and knowing how the common folk condemn, what it is i do, to you to keeep you warm, being a woman, being a woman" that has to be my favorite part. it screams feminism, and how she cannot withstand the temptation of pleasure. love it.
@ANewComb7 Little troll of the web let the darkness of sleep along with this music sweep over you while the spider will spin you up and have you unite and become one along with all the other strings of bits and bytes that make sounds that feel kindlyer for your ear than these tones of music!
Yeah and it all went wrong the day you were born if you so still wonders. :)
This was the first Joanna Newsom song I listened to. I remember my friend putting it on the record player, and how we just lay on his bed, listening, not saying anything through the entire song. It was such a beautiful experience.
@illumiere I had one of these experiences with a friend on a car ride around at night. It was the single most intensely beautiful experience I ever had gracing my spirit in music with someone else at the same time. Beautiful.
i would love this song a WHOLE lot more if her voice was smoother. i have a hard time listening to joanna's older stuff when her voice was a lot squeakier and harsh
This song reminds me of every creation myth I've ever read, wrapped into The Odyssey, folded into some Virginia Woolf stream of consciousness and the elemental symbols of T.S Eliot's The Wasteland. It's lyrical bliss and a siren song in itself. "The peace which passeth all understanding"
@kelsohammy Yes, it is such a graceful lyric. I love to listen to this going into work in the morning. Like blue cheese or red wine you have to sample it a number of time before you can appreciate it; but when your palate adapts it your tongue is assaulted by uncommon flavor. Every time I hear something new.
@DAS6921 just because you think she sounds similar (I do not) doesn't mean she wants to be Bjork. She might have inspired Joanna but she is not a Bjork wannabe.
@ratm239 Yeah but don't you think such a unique sound wouldn't be duplicated...? I mean singing style and all... Just listen to both of their voices and styles of music... Joanna may have a more..."Sweet" feel but... seriously.... you don't see ANY resemblance???
@ratm239 no, joanna has a more celtic/medieval-y sounding voice. on the creepy yet sweet old withered lady twisted sad beautiful pure fair maiden side. bjork's is somethin' else. I can understand your comparison, however, their tonal voice inflections they sing through are very very similar but I truly believe joanna is definitely singing in her own unique voice and not trying to cop bjork. I couldn't imagine that with Joanna.
I can assure you beyond certainty that Joanna Newsom did not build her life around music simply to be a 'Bjork wannabe.' While they are both eclectic and beautiful women, they are two completely different people, with two completely forms of music. Leave it to a sheep to say all wolves look the same.
@DAS6921 Bjork has been singing and recording music since she was a child. As a fan of both they are not similar at all except for the fact that they are both women that are perceived as "weird".
I agree. I've been listening to her for about 4 years now... And Only skin is my favourite... It took me so long to learn it by heart! But now I'm so glad I can sing it through the end.

saying Joanna is a Bjork imitator is a base and ignorant statement. just because both are "weird," doesn't mean they're exactly the same.

@ratm239 ummm check ur info BUDDY. Bjork has been singing since 1992 and Joanna started in 2002 and their music sounds dangerously close....
