@oBLACKIECHANoo it's simply impossible to MAKE a piece of paper that's big enough. there are 10^80 subatomic particles in the universe. that's a 1 with 80 zeroes. a googolplex is a 1 with 10^100 zeroes. so even if you wrote 1 zero on each subatomic particle in the universe, you would need 10^20 universes to have enough particles. that's 100 quintillion in short scale and 100 trillion in long scale, because every time you increase the power by 1, you multiply the number by 10.
i just hate that definition of man. why not say "woman" and include the sexes in that word instead? i know i'm making a big deal out of this lol. truthfully, i don't care.
but the way you used the word "man" was just fucking annoying.
@OyonTheAdept Oh boy, no need to over react. I'm sure it isn't the end of mankind, dude. You truly are pathetic in so many different ways. Actually, I find your stupidity offensive. Please refrain from using stupidity and I will try to be less gender specific. How is that for a deal, sweetheart?
@OyonTheAdept Yes I do, I know you're a moronic, middle agedwoman who probably got abused as a child and never had a real education, and now later in life, because of your paast you have nothing to do all day other than whine about shit that doesn't exist. You're a feminist whore, you have the IQ of a pigeon, so why don't you shut the fuck up.
What's larger: a Googolplex or Graham's Number? My mind is too small to even consider the notion of thinking of dreaming about coming up with an idea of a method to develop a way of thinking about pondering the conception of a thought to start deciphering a way to even begin considering calculating the first few digits of either of these numbers.
@OyonTheAdept Perhaps women know a bigger number. They certainly are the better sex in many ways. However, if you look up the multiple meanings of "man" in a dictionary (which your poor grammar suggests you haven't), you would find it can mean "A human being of either sex". I'm sure your feeble attempt at facetiousness is all in good jest though. ;)
@Topmercs look, you sexist, next time just say "a human being" or include women in what you're saying.
i know you included women when you said "...known to man." but the thing is, many people either don't care or don't know. they want you to include women in a noticeable way.
i'm just trying to promote fairness. and next time, don't jump to conclusions and say that i don't know the definition (or at least, the popularized meaning) of "man", cuz i do know.
@OyonTheAdept Have you never heard to term "known to man"? It's incredibly well known, and if you're a fluent speaker of English you should've heard it before. It's gender neutral in this case, and saying that it's sexist is, well, incorrect.
@Xanatos712 Grahams Number is MUCH bigger. If you google (hehe googol) this phrase "TIL: There is a number so large mathematicians do not know what it starts with but they do know that it ends in a 7." You will come to a page that and a video that explain both a googolplex and grahams number. But beware, my brain exploded.
ok i dont get it why the hell does mighty number say the number is called ten duotrigintillion and not googol?? i typed in 1 followed by 100 zeroes??? :(
@kaneda956 A duotrigintillion is the name given to 10^99 - so using the same common system, 10^100 is equal to ten duotrigintillion. A "googol" is just a simpler, more commonly used name for this same number

TV takes up far too much of our time and is apparently much more attractive to most of us than the beauty and wonder of science. This is a prescription for disaster. We might get away with it for a while, but sooner or later this combustible mixture of ignorance and power is going to blow up in our faces." - CARL SAGAN
i would have been pissed if i was chosen to be apart of the group to write a googolplex on that paper....hopefully my partner is a dumass and we agree that I were to write out all the number 1's
Heads up guys, theres a sequel to Sagan's "cosmos" planned for a 2013 release that will be produced by Ann Druyan (sagan's widow) and Seth McFarlene. And the host will be Neil Degrasse Tyson.
@TheOnlyMeta There are actually tens of thousands of Carl Sagans roaming the Earth at any given moment. They work at universities, defense/technology companies, and as entrepeneurs. They just aren't known as well because they don't have a TV program.
Don't get me wrong, I love Carl. It's just that these intellects are far more common than you would imagine.
@myrtlebox You are correct - there are many brilliant people out there, but the difference between these individuals and Carl Sagan is that he had the power to explain even the most complex subject in the simplest terms so that even non-gifted individuals could understand, learn, and possibly explain to someone else. That is what makes Carl Sagan stand out. Having a TV show didn't hurt either! :D
@crazygeo81 Just because all numbers are a bunch of ones added together, doesn't mean 1 is the only number. And just because they are the same distance from infinity doesn't make them the same number.
@drmoroe30 "Grahams Number" drawfs a Googolplex and it has been used in a practical mathematical calculation.. though im not sure what it calculates. Noone knows the full value of Grahams Number... only the last few thousand digits (not the first digits)
he was at cw post in may 1987 at the graduation ceremony....he gave the speech sirs...it was boring for ignorant people...he was a real intellectual...I caught up with him...my mind has stretched onto Mars, green planets, bipedal killer goats with sabertooth fangs, 200 ft monsters in the galaxy m31...hairless quantum flying aliens who travel intergalactal...we have not yet imagined sirs...
Because the fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom.
God hath madethe earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and hath stretched Out The heavens by his discretion. The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?
I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.
Cosmos, even if it is a few decades old, should be seen by all. What a wonderful series that provokes thought and logic. Carl Sagan was a great person influencing countless people. Much respect to him and those that follow in his footsteps like Neil Tyson Degrasse... wish our media would promote this stuff more instead of ignorance.
Now imagine a 1 with a googolplex of zeroes after it. A googolplexian. Now imagine a 1 with a googolplexian of zeroes after it. No imagine your brain exploding.
@R3dbadge i wasnt exactly treing to correct him in fact i was kinda tryna ask a question, i am only 14 this stuff is quite hard :) but that is quite funny though
im no mathamtician but if im not right a 10 to the power 10 is 10000000000 if you write that a 100 times dont you get a googolplex, becus if so then thats not so hard to right now is it?
@coolbadboy786 You're doing it backwards... in the notation at the end of the video, you would solve 10^100 first, then solve 10^googol. The way you are solving it gives you only 1000 zeroes where a googolplex contains a googol zeroes, or 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 zeroes.
im no mathamtician but if im not right a 10 to the power 10 is 10000000000 so if you times that by a hundred, so right that amount of zeros isnt that a googolplex, which isnt hard to tight at all
I've been watching my video tape(VHS lol) of this. Good ole Carl his logic is clear cut. If you come up with a big number there is always one bigger, thier is no such thing as an "infinite" number(unless your a superstitious fool or Dr. Who nut beleive time has an end) however, if you try and count it out, you'll find the Universe it'self(theroratically) will come to a "lights out" end LONG before you reach your target end number.(100,000,000,000,000 years is how long some clock the universe)
"... and yet, these numbers, the googol and the googolplex, do not approach, they come no where near infinity. In fact a googolplex is precisely as far from infinity as is the number one" - Carl Sagan.
Yet another attempt to impress us with the infinite by aid of the finite. I have to say large numbers have done a hell of a lot more to make infinity seem big than infinity has ever done to make large numbers seem small ! Finite numbers are also better at making other finite numbers look small.
To be an atheist you do not need brains. No man says "God does not exist", except one who has an interest in that it does not exist. The world is still waiting for the first atheist wise. I am surprised to find an intelligent person who fights against something she absolutely does not believe it exists. The devil divides the world between atheism and superstition.
God created only wise minds and immortal souls, but this was ruined by sin.
Cuz the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.
But God hath chosen the foolish tgs of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak tgs of the world to confound the tgs which are mighty;
And base tgs of the world, and tgs which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and tgs which are not, to bring to nought tgs that are:
Thus saith the LORD, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches.
But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the LORD which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the LORD.
@anticorncob6 Because the fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom.
The most compelling response to the futility of writing out a googolplex would be to say, "Well why not make the zeros really small or write on incredibly thin paper".....until you do the math. The known Universe is ~ 10^78 m3. If we were to divide it up into a googol boxes, a box for each zero, then each box would be ~ 10^-22m3. That's roughly the size of a hydrogen atom. Put another way you could just about cram a googol H atoms into the known universe with no spaces in between.
There is also a number called Googoldecaplex notated 10^10^10^10^10^10^10^10^10^10^100 or having 11 levels of exponent. But what if you have a number like Googolcentiplex, Googolmilliplex or Googolterraplex, they would in turn need a higher notation maybe like 10^(101), 10^(1,001) and 10^(1,000,000,000,001). But a number like 10^(1,000,000,000,000,000) would need a notation like 10^(10(15) and a number like 10^(10(1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000) notated like 10^(10(10-27).
i wonder if the human mind would be able to hold a googolplex. dont know how much "storage space" the human brain has but all i know is its a helluva lot more than any computer
I decided to put as much zeros as I could on a word processing program on the computer, and I got to 117,415 pages, with 60,000,000 zeros, then it crashed. A googolplex is (5/3)^999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999993 times more than that! I wonder if it's even possible to get them on a computer. . . .
1000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 thats how big a googol is. 1+100 zeros a googol plex is 100 googols.think about that l0l0l0l :D
@zanarisslayisnoob : A Googolplex is a hell of a lot more than 100 Googols... it's a lot more than a Googol of Googols. What it is, is this: Multiply a Googol by a Googol, and then repeat that process 99 more times.
I've always seen a googol and googolplex as being fouled up: notice that numbers upshift there name ever 3 zeros 1,000 = thousand; 1,000,000 = million. 10^100 would give one too many zeros for a real number, putting the resulting number in the tens position. For a REAL number it should have been 10^99 for a googol or 10^10^99 for a googolplex.
@losermonster Only a mooncalf would play semantics instead of trying to Grok the actual concept of a statement ... (sigh) Okay, I'll try to explain in better terms, I'm not saying that the number doesn't exist, of course it does. I'm saying: the categorical title of the number is wrong, what they call a Google, would actually come out to be ten Google in the way we presently divide up numbers. Write out a Google on a piece of paper and you'll see I'm right. :)
@sidequest Or are you saying that the naming of it would be different? As in the categories are divided into powers of 3? That makes sense in a way but only if you're following the typical numbering conventions. Googol was just a number made up to show how huge numbers can get. If it fit into the conventional naming system it would probably be called a Googillion.
I guess you're half right. Maybe 49%. I'll take the remaining 51 ;)
@sidequest : Yes, I agree. Partly. To fit in with the normal conventions, Googol should have been ten to the power of something divisible by three. Fortunately, we'll probably never deal in Googols, no matter how bad the economy gets. It was not created for everyday use, but as an example of how large numbers can be. Be careful about your distinction of 'real' vs. 'not real'. All numbers are real, unless you try to get the square-root of a negative number, and that's a whole different worm-can.
@TheNewCrankyWorkshop LOL. I was just going to say, what about those pesky imaginary numbers, before I read the last sentence. O how I long to solve complex matrixes again.
chuck norris can count to a googolplex.

@vskynet This question is difficult to understand.
Are you asking if zero equals other numbers? No.
Your mistake seems to be that you think you can somehow "divide" a digit of a larger number of existence as if it were a multiplication.
You can't.
10 does not equal 1 times 0, it equals ten.

There are about a googol ways to arrange 70 cards.
Imagine there being a googol cards, each with a different combination of 70 on it.
Then the number of ways to arrange THESE cards is a googolplex.

10^2 = 100
10^100 = googol
10^googol = googolplex
10^googolplex = googolduoplex
10^googolduoplex = googoltriplex
10^googoltriplex = googolquadplex
Then it goes googolquinplex, googolsescaplex, googolseptemplex, googoloctoplex, googolnonaplex, googoldecaplex.

im no mathamtician but if im not right a 10 to the power 10 is 10000000000 if you write that a 100 times dont you get a googolplex, becus if so then thats not so hard to right now is it?
coolbadboy786 7 months ago
@coolbadboy786 You're doing it backwards... in the notation at the end of the video, you would solve 10^100 first, then solve 10^googol. The way you are solving it gives you only 1000 zeroes where a googolplex contains a googol zeroes, or 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 zeroes.

coolbadboy786 7 months ago
I've been watching my video tape(VHS lol) of this. Good ole Carl his logic is clear cut. If you come up with a big number there is always one bigger, thier is no such thing as an "infinite" number(unless your a superstitious fool or Dr. Who nut beleive time has an end) however, if you try and count it out, you'll find the Universe it'self(theroratically) will come to a "lights out" end LONG before you reach your target end number.(100,000,000,000,000 years is how long some clock the universe)
fucheduck 7 months ago

"... and yet, these numbers, the googol and the googolplex, do not approach, they come no where near infinity.

The devil divides the world between atheism and superstition.

anticorncob6 7 months ago
God created only wise minds and immortal souls, but this was ruined by sin.
Cuz the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.
But God hath chosen the foolish tgs of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak tgs of the world to confound the tgs which are mighty;
And base tgs of the world, and tgs which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and tgs which are not, to bring to nought tgs that are:
That no flesh should glory in his presence.

Type 1 zero a second. Starting at birth until you reach 100 and die.
3,153,600,000 zeros approximately.
Imagine a computer typing out 1,000,000,000 zeros each second. At the same time as you, for your life span:
3,153,600,000,000,000,000 approximately.
Compared to:

I've always seen a googol and googolplex as being fouled up: notice that numbers upshift there name ever 3 zeros 1,000 = thousand; 1,000,000 = million. 10^100 would give one too many zeros for a real number, putting the resulting number in the tens position. For a REAL number it should have been 10^99 for a googol or 10^10^99 for a googolplex.
sidequest 11 months ago
@sidequest If it's not the square root of a negative then it is a real number. What are you talking about?
losermonster 11 months ago
@losermonster Only a mooncalf would play semantics instead of trying to Grok the actual concept of a statement ... (sigh) Okay, I'll try to explain in better terms, I'm not saying that the number doesn't exist, of course it does. I'm saying: the categorical title of the number is wrong, what they call a Google, would actually come out to be ten Google in the way we presently divide up numbers. Write out a Google on a piece of paper and you'll see I'm right. :)
sidequest 11 months ago
@sidequest Or are you saying that the naming of it would be different? As in the categories are divided into powers of 3? That makes sense in a way but only if you're following the typical numbering conventions. Googol was just a number made up to show how huge numbers can get. If it fit into the conventional naming system it would probably be called a Googillion.
I guess you're half right. Maybe 49%. I'll take the remaining 51 ;)
losermonster 11 months ago
@sidequest : Yes, I agree. Partly. To fit in with the normal conventions, Googol should have been ten to the power of something divisible by three. Fortunately, we'll probably never deal in Googols, no matter how bad the economy gets. It was not created for everyday use, but as an example of how large numbers can be. Be careful about your distinction of 'real' vs. 'not real'. All numbers are real, unless you try to get the square-root of a negative number, and that's a whole different worm-can.
