@mellowmorgan92 Yes in the book. They must have changed it in the movie for some reason. But in a version of the movie from the 1980s you do see people running away during the whole epidemic thing. I don't remember much from that one but in the beginning part there are people running away and crying and screaming.

@Artprincess247 It's not that they didn't want her. Just in those times, children were seen as liabilities especially in rich households. They were usually taken care of by nannies and were only given attention once they grew up and could be of some use like keeping the family name and marrying to keep family lines going. That's just my opinion.
