I cant believe, then again not really, the camera guy could of tried harder to stop that car from driving into that!! Carefull next time it could be you.
I heard the Cypress freeway collapse for I lived about a half mile away. The earthquake ended and there was this pure moment of silence then BOOM! It was the loudest sound I ever heard and I didn't know what it was at that moment until later when I saw the news. That is one way I don't want to go and to this day, I hate being under bridges.
I remember this day well....being out in the East Bay (an hour and a half from the epicenter), we felt a slight jolt but enough to cause a panic. Both my brother and I ran down a soccer field just as Loma Prieta ripped right through...to this day, watching the aftershock at home (where the ground literally jumped up in front of us!) scares me. Many thoughts to everyone who succumbed to injuries that day.
@magiccheese01 Well, wood is a practical available material to build houses with here, but in respect with earthquakes, houses built from wood fair better than the other viable building material around here, which are bricks. If you've ever seen what an earthquake does to masonry, you would see why we build with wood instead. Wood is one of the best materials for anti-seismic construction since it's of low mass and is less brittle than masonry.
@magiccheese01 If you need examples, check out the damage from the Christchurch earthquake that happened not to long ago, and the L'Aquila earthquake that happened in 2009.
@destiny5532 Er...yes we would. Earthquakes have happened since the beginning of time, even before people were cutting "threw" the earth. (Whatever the crap that means.) lol
Natural disasters are no longer un-known to man. All the tools to locate a disaster & measuring its intensity have been invented. Man has explored the space to its extremes discovering black holes as no time zones. New theories of earthquakes have come into being. Nuclear technology has entered a new phase. But man is as wild as he was. The war of human supremacy is going on destroying the globe altogether.

I've never understood how being built on bedrock is an advantave in a quake. I would think you'de feel the shaking more since its the tectonic plates that are moving. I would think being on sand of softer materials would be an advantage becuase youde be cushioned more. Obviously I'm wrong but I've never understood why.
@Nash1a Well slow moving tectonic plates are what buildup the stress along faults but the stress being released in a quake along the faultlines will travel faster through softer soil and shake more.
@than217 it's called liquefaction. the same thing happened in the northridge earthquake in los angeles. the san fernando valley where i live is basically on floodplain silt. the bedrock hills were like a bathtub. the effect was the same too. basically you're in a tub. but being on bedrock helps because it's solid and is like an anchor.
@Nash1a sand liquefies...I live in SF.....and my Apt shakes over a 2.1 in San Jose ...but i would rather feel the ground move at a steady flow than have the entire ground turn to water
@Nash1a -- it's called liquifaction. The softer bottoms become liquid-like, causing more devastation, not less. If you built a house on pudding and then shook the pudding really hard, what happens? This is why earthquakes in the SF area are so devastating, and like the one in Mexico City in 1985. Mexico City was built on top of an old lake bed that had been filled in with debris to make land -- just like SF -- and when the earth moves, the "land" becomes waterlike and there is no support.
@Nash1a it's because of liquefaction of soil. in an earthquake the soft soil turns into liquid. in an earthquake that is very dangerous as foundations of buildings don't have anything to stand on, and down goes the building. that is why it is better to be on harder ground during an earthquake. for example, look at the 1989 loma prieta earthquake, or the 1995 kobe earthquake, soil liquefaction contributed to a lot of the damage.
@Nash1a AHAHAHAHA I'm from christchurch new zealand where almost the entire city is on sand and it definitely does not help it actually makes it a shit ton worse
@Nash1a i think they say because on soft sand the ground is unstable and buildings would sink into the ground and topple over because it's a more fin dirt. bed rock is stronger and holds the buildings supports.
Seismic amplification is to blame! Seismic waves slow down and increase in amplitude (amplify) when they travel from hard bedrock to soft sediment, thus the amount of shaking is greatly increased. To further worsen things, if the sediment is unconsolidated (not rock) you get liquefaction of the sediment upon shaking - essentially quicksand. Hope this helps.
@Nash1a -- the problem with 'soft' ground is something called "liquefaction".
It means that the soil and underlying groundwater (even 15-20 feet down), will mix during the shaking, causing structures to shift and settle. This is not a good thing. Not at all.
Of course, this is a very broad oversimplification. But it fits in the limited space for the replies, here on YouTube! Check Wikipedia for "liquefaction' and 'earthquake'.
@Nash1a - Shaking is worse on soft sediments because they behave like jello in an earthquake. If you shake a big bowl of jello, you will see that the surface of the jello in the middle of the bowl moves a lot, with all sorts of ripples, but at the edges, the jellow sticks to the firmer bowl and doesn't move so much. It is, of course, more complicated than that, but the weak sediments, especially wet, soft sediments, just flap around, while the bedrock is firm and doesn't move so much.
@Nash1a take some sand and pour it into a bucket with a cup of water underneath. Shake the bucket and watch all that water come up to the top. This is why this is no good, most of south of market is built on reclaimed land all the way to china basin.
@lesdragoniers Naw, It only the western side that has earthquake problems. California, Oregon, washington etc. I live in Cal, been through a few quakes now but nothing bad. The rest of the US doesnt get earthqakes. Or if they do, its very very rare, or so small you wouldnt even notice it.
This was very scary to me at 6 years old living in Alameda. I was on a bar stool watching my mom cook dinner and the chair fell over and i got pinned down. Mom rescued me to the bathroom doorway. I can only imagine what it was like for those people:(
@Mishka1959 It maybe sevaral this. Lack of consintration (they may have been looking in the rearview mirror) and the perspective may have blocked thier view. As I recall, some people foolishly tried to do a "James Bond" jump over the gap with thier cars, and failed
@Mishka1959 Plus, the driver was an out-of-country Tourist from the Figi Islands, probably unfamiliar with the area--told by the people in charge of directing traffic to go this direction. The person in the car stopped because they saw cars in the same lane going towards them and to far away to know until the first of the two vehicles went into it.
@Mishka1959 It wasnt a hole it was a whole section droped so if you are looking onward you only see that the road continues ..People wanted to get off the bridge and panic does weird things
When the earth is shaken to her (utmost) convulsion, And the earth throws up her burdens (from within), And man cries (distressed): 'What is the matter with her?'- On that Day will she declare her tidings: For that thy Lord will have given her inspiration. On that Day will men proceed in companies sorted out, to be shown the deeds that they (had done). Then shall anyone who has done an atom's weight of good, see it! And anyone who has done an atom's weight of evil, shall see it. Quran
0:53 ...did that car just drive into a hole?! didn't they see it?! well good for that lady for saying that they needed to help. oh god, this is so devastating. Now, since i live in California, i'm scared like hell now...
@lilazngurl563 Where in California do you live? If you live in the Oakland-San Francisco Bay area then you probably are better off than you would have been in 1989. You might want to read up on the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake and it's aftermath, a lot of the bridges and streets have been vastly improved since the earthquake and many buildings that weren't reinforced to standards are long since gone.
was this part of some documentary? it sure looks and sounds like it. i lived in california my whole life and greatful i never had to go through anything like this. now that i dont live in CA, i still freak out when i feel the smallest shake. unfortunately, CA sits directly on the San Andreas fault and, unfortunately, is still waiting for "the big one"
@Tornado1994 that's like saying just because LA doesnt get much rain it never rains in LA. Hopefully it will never happen but just in case, i'd rather be prepared. every part of the country has its thing and California has earthquakes. fact.
@TwiliPri1 I know. But a major one only hits once every decade. Pasa Robles being the last to hit the state at 7.0. in 2003. This decade will see a major California quake. All decades do.
@Tornado1994 that's what's so scary. you never get a warning with earthquakes. i just moved to texas and they have hurricanes and floods, they at least get a warning and a chance to prepare, sometimes days, even a week or two in advance. no one can predict an earthquake, its magnitude, or the horrors it will cause.
I'll never forget that day. Gods, it was a horrific day. Even now I feel emotional watching the images of that collapsed freeway. Horrible. Horrible. I think my Dad finally banned us all from watching tv because we just couldn't stop and I am sure I had nightmares.
OK Mr. wise i will bet you 10,000 $ that it wont happen. LOL if im right i will enjoy it, if you are right it wont matter. It dose not say it will end in 2011. I dont know what Bible you maybe be reading. KJV is the only one that is close to the turth. You should read the Bible where it says that only god will know the time of the end of the world. that has not be changed. Do i want to believe what 1 man thinks, or a group of men that made some website? No i study for my self.
We DON'T KNOW WHEN THE WORLD WILL COME TOO A END!!! it might end in, 5 4 3 2 boom... Your dead. It might end tomorrow it might end today! No one really knows..
This is so sad! I remember watching the news live when it happened. But a much bigger quake is coming that will be world-wide. May 21 2011 will be the day of Gods wrath. The rapture, and The day of judgment. Then 5 months of 'hell on earth' until the end of the world, oct 21 , 2011. follow my name to learn how we can know this from the Holy Bible. The Bible gives us a calendar and timeline of all the important events in Gods salvation plan. May God have mercy on us all!

@Mishka1959
because when your driving you cant really see anything on the bottom and those people are freaked out

Now, since i live in California, i'm scared like hell now...
lilazngurl563 1 year ago

TwiliPri1 1 year ago
@TwiliPri1 Stop reading that "Big One" Propogana. People have been saying it for decades. The Big One hasn't happened and never will.
Tornado1994 1 year ago
@Tornado1994 that's like saying just because LA doesnt get much rain it never rains in LA. Hopefully it will never happen but just in case, i'd rather be prepared. every part of the country has its thing and California has earthquakes. fact.
TwiliPri1 1 year ago
@TwiliPri1 I know. But a major one only hits once every decade. Pasa Robles being the last to hit the state at 7.0. in 2003. This decade will see a major California quake. All decades do.
Tornado1994 1 year ago
@Tornado1994 that's what's so scary. you never get a warning with earthquakes. i just moved to texas and they have hurricanes and floods, they at least get a warning and a chance to prepare, sometimes days, even a week or two in advance. no one can predict an earthquake, its magnitude, or the horrors it will cause.
TwiliPri1 1 year ago
00:53 This is really sad. I just saw a documentary about this Earthquake and the person driving is driving with her brother and this happens.
The woman didn't survive but her brother did.
Itzpower 1 year ago
lol.. California has 100s of earthquakes everyday. You just dont feel more then half of them.
TheCheese909 1 year ago
@TheCheese909 Correct. They're called "tremors". Also CA only gets hit by major quakes once every decade.

I'll never forget that day. Gods, it was a horrific day. Even now I feel emotional watching the images of that collapsed freeway. Horrible. Horrible. I think my Dad finally banned us all from watching tv because we just couldn't stop and I am sure I had nightmares.

Lol who is the moron driving at 0:54? After a huge earthquake like that, I wouldn't have even made an attempt to drive on a bridge.

for my own salvation. I dont see that in the bible.
GordonRyan80 1 year ago
OK Mr. wise i will bet you 10,000 $ that it wont happen.
GordonRyan80 1 year ago
We DON'T KNOW WHEN THE WORLD WILL COME TOO A END!!! it might end in, 5 4 3 2 boom... Your dead. It might end tomorrow it might end today! No one really knows..
WolfyGirl2000 1 year ago
wisemansheart also stop SPAMING that date. you said it, enough.
GordonRyan80 1 year ago
This is so sad! I remember watching the news live when it happened. But a much bigger quake is coming that will be world-wide. May 21 2011 will be the day of Gods wrath. The rapture, and The day of judgment. Then 5 months of 'hell on earth' until the end of the world, oct 21 , 2011. follow my name to learn how we can know this from the Holy Bible. The Bible gives us a calendar and timeline of all the important events in Gods salvation plan. May God have mercy on us all!
