I love how they adapted the story to a modern setting, and did it so skillfully, without destroying any of the essential traits of the original work. Also love how they spiced up the characters, especially Sherlock ;)
Updating Sherlock Holmes to "modern times" is nothing new. Most of the Basil Rathbone Holmes movies were set in the England of the 1940's in order to address issues pertinent to that time period.
I have to say, a lot of the dramatizations of Holmes never really did it for me. I am a HUGE fan of the Conan Doyle stories, and I never thought that the way the character was portrayed really fit. But then Sherlock comes along, and I have only one thing to say.
@ImANerdYoureAnAss No, no, that's not what I was looking for--Martin's being made of kittens is a metaphor; Benedict's being made of sex is just an obvious fact. I was looking for a metaphor but could not think of a nice imaginative one because all that could come to mind was: "Sex. Sex. Sex." There's got to be more to him than that.
I know this because he was part of a dream I had last night and there was definitely more to him than sex. I just can't recall what that more was because the dream also had Time Lords (see: Doctor Who). I dream about Time Lords now. Time Lords are cool.
RDJ and Benedict Cumberbatch have played these roles in entirely different ways and, so, I think that comparing them is just madness and a little pointless. They're certainly not the first actors to portray them either so, there are also other actors who've donned the deer stalker hat so to speak. I prefer Benedict Cumberbatch and Basil Rathbone. They have both so brilliantly embodied Sherlock Holmes for me that they're really kind of what I pictured when I read the novels.
The only problem I have with it being modern is that I genuinly don't think the modern world would be the same without Sherlock Holmes being what it was back when it was... Other than that, couldn't love it more! <3 Ben and Martin!
Like SmileAtMeAgain1 said, Cumberbatch is good looking in a unique way (I think it's the cheek bones). It's so refreshing, especially since I live in the U.S. We have a rather trite set of looks here for "handsome" and "beautiful". Britain gets Cumberbatch, we get Downey Jr. Guess who I think is better suited for the role of Sherlock Holmes?
The thing I love about Benedict Cumberbatch is that although he is very good looking, he still has a very unique appearence - he's not your typical gorgeous man. Although that fact just makes him MORE attractive in my opinion.
I think I would genuinely marry a guy like Benedict's Sherlock. Even his arsey-ness and arrogance just seems so alluring...

"This is a time of heroes ..." But for me, if Holmes is the mind of England, then Watson - is its soul. I love them both! (From Russia with Love)
