@steeltoto what a great era of time for metal.too bad the black album changed everything.i do like some of it but not even half of the album do i care for.
damn, it would be hard too choose between kirk and cliff. i mean cliff took kirks place on the bus when he died. what if he hadn't? damn then we wouldnt have kirk.
Having seen this video I find it hard to believe, accept even what this band have become today. Such a shame. The energy and rawness displayed here has gone. Or should I say has faded to black?
This is so badass. Back when Metallica was hungry, angry and disciplined. Cliff Burton is so missed, but so is Jason Newsted and Metallica is not the same without Jason. But Cliff was Metallica, that's clear now.
@toad1971 I agree with you on everything, except that Cliff was Metallica. I think James was the driving force, along with Lars and Cliff. While I love Kirk, he seems to be a bit along for the ride. I blame 3 things for the demise of Metallica as a thrash band: age, success and Bob Rock.
Financial success makes it pretty hard to be hungry and angry like they were. Also, as you age, you mellow....it's just life. Now, as for Bob Rock, I think he came in on the Black Album and began the process of destroying their edge. I blame him almost competely for their crappy albums they put out.
Totally wrong. Metallica is James. All the other members in Metallica haven't changed as much as James. His change of attitude in stage is what makes people think "Metallica" has changed. He used to be a drunk motherfucker, he banged his head, he screamed, and he even insulted fans, now he doesn't do ant of that, he's all mellow. The fact that he is the face of the band, makes people confuse his change with Metallica change. Metallica is the same (the other members) James isn't.
@toad1971 Its kind of stupid, because in this video you dont see anything really standing out from Cliff. But... LOOK AT JAMES! That's attitude, man. You confusing James attitude with all Metallica's attitude. The other guys play as they did, more or less. The attitude oj James is what you see in the first place, is he's angry, Metallica look angry. If he's mellow like now, Metallica look mellow.
@postigaceltic finally found someone who says that Cliff wasn't Metallica, all feelings was definately from James. You can see on interviews with James and Cliff, James was more raw than Cliff, I'm sorry again but Cliff was looking kind arrogant on an old interview from mid 80's
Dave is awesome of course the godfather of the double bass, but Lars off beats just wax Dave's ass hands down. When I say that i am talking about his drumming on the first 4 albums, but im sure you know that since you listen to Slayer lol. Both are really amazing drummers.

You are severely misinformed my friend. They pulled pranks on him in the 80's, and treated him like crap then. The reason he left was because he was a hired gun. They weren't paying him any royalties from album sales or anything. He was getting payed to play shows and that was it. I hate to admit it, but Lars and James are a couple of greedy mother fuckers. And the Napster scandal didn't exactly make Jason want to stay either.
You are an idiot. Of course they played pranks on Jason. He was the new guy in a band that had been together for years. But that doesn't mean they didn't respect him. Also, of course he didn't get royalties for albums he had no part in making, but he did get them for the albums that he was a part of. Jason has said many times that the lapse between Reload and St.Anger is the reason he left.
they didnt respect jason, especially james and lars who were total assholes to him. jason wasnt even allowed to contribute to albums. Even Scott Ian of Anthrax said they treated him real badly.
James and Lars are two control freaks with Metallicas music. Cliff Burton was a major force behind Metallica's best music, after he died, Metallica became all about the money and fashion and not about music anymore. Fucking rockstar bitches who need to hire group therapists to get along.
I agree that Cliff helped them create some of there best music, but a lot of people think AJFA and Black album are two of if not their 2 best. I love both of them, then they drastically changed their style. I still liked Load and Reload but not as many songs on them as their other albums. It seemed like they "matured" and grew out of such thrashing. But Death Magnetic sounds great and is just like their old stuff so idk...

Jason said that later on, they actually started to like each other. And watch "A Year And A Half In The Life Of Metallica" cause I see Jason contributing to their songs.
well.. I don't think either of us really know wether they respected him or not, but I don't think they really did. atleast it doesn't seem so in various interviews. But don't think it was the laps between Reload and St.Anger that made him leave, but more that he was not allowed to do various side-projects. atleast that's what it seems like from the pennthouse inverview, and Some kind of monster.
1986 was the coolest year to be alive if you were a metal head. Well, at least it was for me. Metallica were the coolest thing on the planet and Slayer, Celtic Frost & Megadeth were all putting out their best records that year as well. This clip captures Metallica in their prime of being Metallica. Each album saw them getting even better than the last and they still had Cliff who was the true genius of the band. This stuff is awesome but it makes me sad too. Ahhh, memories.
You've got to be kidding me! I'll take any/all of the 1986 albums from the bands I mentioned over Kill 'em All in a heartbeat! Reign in Blood, Peace Sells... & To Mega Therion are ALL superior records & from a strictly "Metallica" stand point, Ride The Lightning & Master of Puppets blow the doors off of Kill 'em All as well. Kill 'em All is great for what it is but isn't even close to being the masterpiece that Lightning or Puppets is. I suppose you think "Show no Mercy" is Slayer's best too?
"Peace Sells" & "Killing..." are just about even as far as how good they are to me but I've never been the biggest fan of Kill 'em All. Don't get me wrong, I loved it when I was younger & still dig it now but as the years have gone by it hasn't stood the test of time for me as Puppets & Lightning have. They just advanced so much, got heavier & developed their use of harmonies on those records. Cliff's influence really began to make it's presence known & they reached their peak in my opinion.
I agree with you to a point. I haven't liked any album after Seasons in the Abyss as much as that album but average or not, they never stopped being Slayer and I respect the hell out of them for that. Literally every other band out of that early 1980's thrash scene (Metallica, Megadeth, Exodus, Anthrax, etc) would sell out, break up or put out some seriously weak/lame records at some point. Slayer just kept on doing what they do & have prevailed as time has gone by. Nothing but respect for them.
the black album was awesome because it showed that metallica could incoprate more melody and shit in their music while still playing heavy after that album is when it got bad
I like it but it's just not the same as Puppets or Justice it was less metal with some exceptions but it was way more commercial than Cilff would have had it.
The album wasn't made for money they just did it and it made so much money. It just doesn't have the aggressiveness that the others had I still like it. But I don't like Load or Reload or St. Anger and I do own those albums as well as DeathMagnetic which is ok - great at times.
yea but cliff wouldve liked theblack album he was in to more then just metal and shi and load and re-load have a couple good songs like until it sleeps, and bleeding me
Cliff did like other things than metal but I'm pretty sure he wouldn't have wanted it like that. It would have been better and less commercial (load and Reload) but I'm saying that Cliff would have liked it but he would have made it different more metal and more attitude.
i see what your saying but just think it wasnt metallica that made that record comercial we the fans did by buying over 5 million copies...idk im just saying that record proved you could play slower and more melodic while still being metal..and i think cliff wouldve liked that but hey who iam i to say right im just a fan
Yeah they weren't aiming to be commercial but it happened. I think Cliff would have known that the songs were aiming to be way more popular and not as meaningful. But yeah we did buy over 5 million copies of it. But then it wen't down hill with them trying to do it over again. But yeah whatever it already happened.
ur saying cliff liked softer stuff, that doesn't mean that he writes it, one of KERRY fukin KING's favorite bands is Elton John and he doesn't write soft shit at all.......Look up "Marty Friendman and Kerry King on Japanese TV Show" on you tube
I say MetallicA over SLAYER but I own my fair share of SLAYER shirts.
SLAYER started to sound the same after a while. But that is complete opposite to MetallicA which sounds different every album but that's not always good. METAL UP YOUR ASS!
Ahh yes... this bootleg VHS made it all the way to Hawaii. The Mighty Met opening for Ozzy! If I remember correctly the camera kept ducking down to avoid security =D haha! They had Sooo Much Energy back then!!
Kirk with the classic Misfits tee on! Hes not much of a headbanger though! Thats what gets the crowd into it! Thats why Cliff was the shit. Thats why Tom Araya, Gary Holt, and Kerry King are too!
Cliff wasn't metallica, Cliff James Lars And Kirk were MetallicA.

This stuff is awesome but it makes me sad too. Ahhh, memories.

You mean 1983! KILL 'EM ALL!
whatisabercowich 3 years ago
You've got to be kidding me! I'll take any/all of the 1986 albums from the bands I mentioned over Kill 'em All in a heartbeat! Reign in Blood, Peace Sells... & To Mega Therion are ALL superior records & from a strictly "Metallica" stand point, Ride The Lightning & Master of Puppets blow the doors off of Kill 'em All as well. Kill 'em All is great for what it is but isn't even close to being the masterpiece that Lightning or Puppets is. I suppose you think "Show no Mercy" is Slayer's best too?
jamesabilly 3 years ago
I think that Kill 'em all is their very best, and that Killing is Megadeths best, but I do think that Reign in Blood's Slayers best.
whatisabercowich 3 years ago
"Peace Sells" & "Killing..." are just about even as far as how good they are to me but I've never been the biggest fan of Kill 'em All. Don't get me wrong, I loved it when I was younger & still dig it now but as the years have gone by it hasn't stood the test of time for me as Puppets & Lightning have. They just advanced so much, got heavier & developed their use of harmonies on those records. Cliff's influence really began to make it's presence known & they reached their peak in my opinion.

We all have the right to our opinion and for the record, I definitely respect yours.

Thank you for those kind words, I respect yours as well, jamesabilly

Everything Slayer has ever done kicks ass (unlike Metallica) but Reign in Blood is still the greatest thing they've ever done.

Slayers new albums are average at best.
Anything after seasons is mediocre.
SENTRY000 3 years ago
I agree with you to a point. I haven't liked any album after Seasons in the Abyss as much as that album but average or not, they never stopped being Slayer and I respect the hell out of them for that. Literally every other band out of that early 1980's thrash scene (Metallica, Megadeth, Exodus, Anthrax, etc) would sell out, break up or put out some seriously weak/lame records at some point. Slayer just kept on doing what they do & have prevailed as time has gone by. Nothing but respect for them.

I agree with you Jamesabilly! But everything after seasons is mediocre

"If Cliff were still around he would not have let all that Black album shit happen."
-Lars Ulrich
He always wanted to be a famous rock star. But Cliff was true to what he wanted to do, regardless if anyone liked him or not.

the black album was awesome because it showed that metallica could incoprate more melody and shit in their music while still playing heavy after that album is when it got bad
IJIIKY9192 2 years ago
I like it but it's just not the same as Puppets or Justice it was less metal with some exceptions but it was way more commercial than Cilff would have had it.
The album wasn't made for money they just did it and it made so much money. It just doesn't have the aggressiveness that the others had I still like it. But I don't like Load or Reload or St. Anger and I do own those albums as well as DeathMagnetic which is ok - great at times.
elite117825 2 years ago 2
yea but cliff wouldve liked theblack album he was in to more then just metal and shi and load and re-load have a couple good songs like until it sleeps, and bleeding me
IJIIKY9192 2 years ago
Cliff did like other things than metal but I'm pretty sure he wouldn't have wanted it like that. It would have been better and less commercial (load and Reload) but I'm saying that Cliff would have liked it but he would have made it different more metal and more attitude.
elite117825 2 years ago
i see what your saying but just think it wasnt metallica that made that record comercial we the fans did by buying over 5 million copies...idk im just saying that record proved you could play slower and more melodic while still being metal..and i think cliff wouldve liked that but hey who iam i to say right im just a fan
IJIIKY9192 2 years ago
Yeah they weren't aiming to be commercial but it happened. I think Cliff would have known that the songs were aiming to be way more popular and not as meaningful. But yeah we did buy over 5 million copies of it. But then it wen't down hill with them trying to do it over again. But yeah whatever it already happened.
elite117825 2 years ago
ur saying cliff liked softer stuff, that doesn't mean that he writes it, one of KERRY fukin KING's favorite bands is Elton John and he doesn't write soft shit at all.......Look up "Marty Friendman and Kerry King on Japanese TV Show" on you tube

Okay, old Metallica or old Slayer?
VFoVendetta 3 years ago
Can't go wrong with either band in the 80's.
jamesabilly 3 years ago
