O.O! DEAR GOD! I suppose your screen can get screwed if you place a candle that close, don't you think so? I use my wiimote on my laptop too and I set 2 candles 2 inches from the mouse pad, not even near the screen and it still works you know :P actually, you can set the candle everywhere else (doesn't matter if you point your screen or not)
The candle behaves as an infrared emisor. Usuarlly when you play with the wii, you have an IR emisor near the tv, the remote uses that lights as refernce for the movement.

I don't think BlueSoleil has anything to do with the Wiimote. It just deals with the drivers for the bluetooth. The program that interfaces your wiimote with your bluetooth is another program.

and what do you do if the candle falls over and spilling hot wax on stuff, not to mention BURN THE SCREEN! probably a good idea to use an IR LED...

Im using WICD for th epointer movement , is a open source software.
Im using it under linux ( ubuntu ) dont know if it is availiable fot other platforms.
