The foal with no leg and the foal with the messed up mouth wasn't from a nurse mare, I read the articles they are deformed supposedly because of vaccines that were " necessary " for the mare.

I love that people are so uppity about a colt being killed, when thousands upon thousands of cattle are treated next to same. Pigs too. Chickens are literally crammed 8 into a cage made for one, and fed hormones to increase their egg laying potential. These animals are kept dirty, cramped and miserable all their lives, but its alright because they dumb. Cows are sweet and smart, pigs make great companions, and yet its the horses that get the public howling. Figures.

It is sad, but in the commercial industry, it is used when a valuable mare dies and leaves her foal. It's not going to stop, but mostly, the foals are old enough to be weaned (at a pinch) when the mare is taken. I'm not saying it should happen, but also, they don't butcher the foals, and the pic at 1:25 is a West Nile vaccine foal. Born with that (to a non-nurse mare)

They are not primarily thoroughbred foals, this is seen in many breeds and sport horses with prize mares.

it may be dead because someone knew it was right to prevent it from suffering. Whether it was born that way or really did have it's limbs hacked off isn't stated. And as for the "We don't want it to happen to these unfortunate horses" part, I'd buy it if they could prove that foal was killed after maiming or the fact that it was probably caused simply because the mare had been bred too many times. Those defects also happen to puppies born to an overbred bitch.

Really? I was told it also happens due to overbreeding. A great example would be dogs or humans. My aunt would have have had 8 children if she hadn't miscarried. The last has some physiological illness because of it.

the foals that are deformed have to be put down. foals have to be able to stand and nurse to survive. If a horse does not have four legs to stand on there is no chance of survival. If any of these mares gave birth to a deformed foal in the wild either she would kill it herself, another horse in the herd would kill it, or it would be eaten alive by other animals and bugs.

This is so sad. I can't believe some people would have the heart to take a tiny little foal away from its mother. Its a good thing rescues are out there to help these foals. A rescue I work with just got 2 foals who's moms had been sold and the owner left them to fend for themselves. These little guys were the lucky ones. This is a cause worth helping. These little babies can't speak for themselves, so speak for them. For their sake!!!

the foal in 1:30 has suffered from a mutation from a dam given the West Nile Virus vaccine. It does this to pregnant mare's foals sometimes.

I don't have any facts but I can assume nurse mares have no real purpose but to produce milk - you don't need a pedigree to do that. But whether they do race them or not, why not?

i have actually adopted a belgan cross filly from last chance corral, i had her until she she about 4 months (got her when she was 3 weeks old) then my mom said it was time to find her a better home. Now shes turning 4 this feb. and is learing jumping and endurance. wish her luck! last chance corral does an AMAZING JOB btw. i know a few people who bought foals there and are very please ... keep up the good work

uhhh cus some of those foals ( like the one with out legs and the one with the closed nose ) were not from this! and i have a freind who worked for a farm and the mares just simply carried the foals..the stallions and mares eggs were put into her and she had nothing to do with the foal..so the mares can still work..

That is the rare case, this problem is mostly in the racing industry where the mare has to carry her baby and can not be artificially inseminated to be registered and eligible to race. Yes it is possible that the some of those photos are not part of it but most of them are. I have seen nurse mare foals that are born in awful condition because they have not received the proper prenatal care because the people do not care about that foal but another that is in a more valuable horse.

Some of the pictures are misleading in that they have nothing to do with this topic, and invetro implantation is starting to phase out the need for killing unwanted foals. But the basis of it is truth. Mares are still being treated this way all over this country, all in the name of money. But then we like to leave out the way other animals are butchered for consumption. Real fair huh?

Its not that they are born bad, more like they were not cared for at the start, they are taken from the mother as soon as it was born so the mother could feed another horse that is considered more valuable. as for what is coming out of the nose, it could be a few different things but most likely a feeding tube because the horse is to weak to eat on its own.

There is a drug now that can bring a mare into milk. I really doubt this happens anymore.
