Bruce is a gamma radiation specilist in the series here. Like in the comics, he saved Rick Jones from a gamma bomb explosion and ended up being caught in the blast zone, thus providing the trigger for his transformation to the Hulk and eventually to his saving his cousin via a transfusion that was gamma tainted enough to transform her to the She-Hulk.
