I'm not sure the Stones would have been as creative if they had decided to become a recording band. They were good songwriters, but not nearly as gifted as Paul or John or prepared to take the kind of mental mind fucking risks John did. But then again they came up with Sympathy for the Devil.

I see The Beatles/Stones argument rages on. I'm glad the Stones were around as a warning to the Fab Four not to get complacent. But they were as promiscuous as each other. The record companies made sure to present the Beatles as squeaky clean while The Stones were presented as the wild boys of rock. It was all spin.

The Beatles wrote better songs, but The Stones were the template for the later, greater bands such as Led Zep and Black Sabbath with a stand alone lead singer working the crowd.
