  • They only sounded like the Jacksons that first year because that is the direction management pushed them in. After that they began to write and play their own material. Check out the Crazy Horses and The Plan albums. The brothers wrote every song and played their own instruments on each track. These 2 albums are by far their best and these were alot heavier than anything the Jackson 5 put out.

  • @boriqmuah - Donny was pushed to the front of the group because of his good looks, youth and voice.

At the time the same thing had already happened to Michael Jackson (from the Jackson 5) and the Osmond's record company wanted to cash in by making Donny the white Michael Jackson. Donny's said he was exploited and made to sing to perfection until his throat bled just to get him to sound like Michael.

When you hear the recorded version JUST like Michael intentionally.

  • Classic .

Wish we could get our hands on the whole concert .

    Thanks for sharing

  • OMG!!!!! I WAS THERE !!!!!! I have pictures of the Osmonds to prove it !!!!!!! What a great concert!!!

  • I love the rawness of this, with all the feedback, and not any effects on the mics. Concerts like this would ruin many artists today who need a lot of technical help.

  • Notice the Osmonds used love and understanding to get their kids to perform and they have turned out for the most part normal...the Jacksons used fear, intimidation, and humiliation and the entire family is one jacked up mess.

  • It's funny how the singing/costume style changed for the Osmond Brothers "AFTER" the Jackson Five came on the scene.

  • i never understood why they wear those idiotic jump suits. im not even going to get started on their dance moves.

  • @howardkevinm It was the fashion back then. And I think, probably a little copycat of Elvis.

  • They really get into it, awesome!

  • A lot of singers like Elivs, the Osmonds, Defranco Family wore the jumpsuits on stage. It was a popular costume at the time. Whites and bright colors could be seen much better from the back of the auditorium. It wasn't just exclusive to Elvis. Most of the time the singers didn't choose the costumes. It was often picked by a costume designer by the show or TV director.

  • did I see this right,, :25 donny and merrill OOPPSS al little,, ?/ but hey,, I can't dance on stage and sing too,,,,,lol smooth ooppsss,, I miss those days

  • The Corporation wrote and produced this song for The Osmonds and why does it sound familiar because...they wrote and produced for the Jackson 5 as well (Jackson 5 number-one hit singles "I Want You Back" (1969), "ABC", "The Love You Save" (both in 1970); as well as for other Jackson 5 singles such as "Mama's Pearl" and "Maybe Tomorrow" (both in 1971). That is why the formula was there and The Osmonds sung it and got a number 1 hit.

  • @twofish68 According to Donny Osmond, this particular song was written for the Jackson 5, but they turned it down in favor of "ABC." Donny also said that Michael's hit single "Ben" was written for him, but since he was out on tour, Michael got it.

  • They're all dressed like a bunch of Elvis impersonators.

  • Love those outfits !!!!!!!!

  • where the freak is the 'legend' button?????

  • @lynjef7 Huh? I'm not sure what a legend button is on here.

  • @cathynel OMG you know these guys are not just 'likes' or 'thumbs up' they are freaking 'LEGENDS' that's why we need a legend button ROTFLMAO

  • OH my gosh ! I was there ! I am so so happy you loaded this ! This was my very first concert. Thank you ..what a sweet memory.

    peace,

    Treva

  • Really shouldn't compare the Osmonds to the Jacksons. The Osmonds were around before the Jacksons on Andy Williams, so you can't say they copied the Jacksons. The Osmonds had "mission" work to do as mormons, and didn't devote all their time to their music. The Jacksons were more successful, but at waht price?

  • @keytardan

Actually both groups were around at the same time, but the Osmonds had success earlier. Once the Jackson five came on the scene the Osmonds changed their sound. Both families suffered the price of fame, the Jacksons were bigger so maybe that is the reason their suffering is more public, but each family is good and will go down in history. They both are good and I hate the bashing one over the other, they respected each other, why can't their fans!!!!

  • LOVE THIS! Thank you!!!!

  • Sounds like Donny's voice was changing at the time.

  • I was there apprx 6 years old. the Jackson 5 were there in 74 and i caught them.

I saw the Osmonds, KC & Sunshine band, Kool & the Gang, Bob Hope at the Ohio State Fair from 72 through 78, then they built the indoor concert pavilion.

I miss the old State Fair Grandstand. Sweet Memories Always.

    Tommy Tommy

  • Poor Donny At :27 he's trying to do his "OHHH!" and he damn near gets knocked on his ass

  • donny o, the white mike jackson

  • Try outfitting a singing group with those outfits today! Expensive!!!

Osmonds ...the one and only. Thanks for the music and memories.

  • I love these guys and they're still great!

  • I was there. Bo Donaldson and the Haywoods opened for them. Made my dad take a carload of girls to the fair. Had a great time!

  • My gosh they were so good! Still are! I was so young but loved them a lot,,I also agree you cannot compare the two groups Osmonds and Jackson 5 they were both awesome, totally different though.

  • just precious!

  • OMG, I was there too!

  • Oh my - are they all trying to be ELVIS... Ah ha

  • @fjordsUSA I believe the Osmonds wore the suits before Elvis and Evel Knievel before all of them.

  • What is great about them is that they traveled and toured as a family. That the parents looked out for them

  • I think I was at this concert!

  • what month was this, july 72.

  • The Osmonds harmonized beautifully together. You can't compare the Osmonds and the Jacksons. They had very different music.

  • Please don't start a war!

One is not "better than the other"

    Don't you go dissing Donny!

    I'm nut's over Donny Osmond.

    And I'm crazy about Michael.

But one's not better only different.

One comes from an African American Jehovah's Witness R&B culture.

One comes from a white Mormon barbershop/country/pop.

    Very different backgrounds.

    You can't compare.

  • LOL! I just peaked at your channel lynjef7 and you've got a Merrill crush!

I totally get it. I've always had a Michael crush (Jackson) and my hubby of 25 years gets it too. It has been very hard since his death. Be sure and send those fan letters to Merrill and his bros. now while he's here, you just never know when the Lord will call one of us home.

  • Hence the last line of my comment,

"But that's just me. Many, many fans didn't do that obviously."

  • My grandmother loved the Osmond brothers from the time they appeared in 1962 on Andy Williams. She loves barber shop quartets. So that's how I was introduced.

  • Accidently posted...they both have value and can't be held one above the other is what I'm saying. They play 2 different types of music. You're comparing apples and oranges. I personally found that I outgrew the Osmonds music by the time I was an older teen but never outgrew the Jacksons. But that's just me. Many, many fans didn't do that obviously.

  • @8mycrab for many of us we did not out grow the Osmonds but grew with them instead.

  • Being a child of the 60-70's I was immersed in the Osmonds, Jacksons, Monkees, Partridge Family, etc...

They all had their own sound especially the Jacksons. The Jacksons were more R&B. If you ever listen to a Jackson 5 album and an Osmond album you can't compare them. Osmonds have a definite pop sound.

  • I Live In Ohio, And I Show My Puppy At The Ohio State Fair Everyyear! I'm Only 13 Tho Ha HA!

  • great stuff now I can see why Michael Jackson refused to be on the same bill whenever the Osmonds were playing they would have suffered in comparision

  • haha did Donny bump into his brother (the lead singer, i dont know his name) at 0:28

  • I was actually there ! I am from Dayton..I was 8 yrs old

  • I begged my dad to drive me to this very show! He refused--it was a 4-hour trip. At last, I can see what I missed.

  • The osmonds are 1,000,000,000, better than the J5.

  • Yourrrrrr crazy... and let me guess your white right?

  • Why does it always has to be white or black? Im an osmond FAN! But I have always love the jackson 5 and micheals music!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Agreed!

  • @vinyl45junkie Two points my friend, first off it's black and white because the powers that be like it that way. That's where the marketing was back then. It is what it is. Secondly I agree with you and think the whole thing is bullshit. I too am a fan of both groups, I do believe J5 had more soul, but again they marketed the Osmonds for a certain crowd.I come on here to enjoy the classics and usually avoid the normal stupid arguements being held by people who saw not one royalty from any song.

  • This was and is nothing less than brilliant, The Osmonds energetic live shows influenced everthing from the New York Dolls to early Kiss....incredible stuff

  • I had a girl back in 70 get me purple socks as a gift. Thanks Joanne G. Don.

  • Boy does this bring back memories. I attended this show. The first time I saw The Osmond Brothers in person was at the Rubber Bowl Stadium in Akron, Ohio. I will never forget it!

  • once a fan...alaways a fan ;)

  • awesome song ha :D

  • they were so great so long ago

  • What memories! I was there that day, too!

  • 0:28, hey Merrill get out of the way, Donny needs to get through! lol. Btw, Elvis told the Osmonds they needed to get flashier with their outfits on stage and he introduced them to his costume designer hence the Elivs-like outfits. Elvis and the Osmonds were friends and he liked to call and talk to Mrs. Osmond because she resembled his late mother. Btw, lest anybody thinks the Osmonds were only a pop band, check out Crazy Horses here on Youtube. Great stuff.

  • this song was supposed to be recorded by the jackson 5 but instead the osmonds recorded it ... the jackson 5 would've done it better !

  • i can't make out if they're copying elvis or the jackson 5. perhaps both.

  • the osmonds didn't copy anyone, they were around long before the jackson 5

  • as a barbershop group, yes. but they evolved into a white version of the J5.

  • the Osmonds were big on TV long before Jackson 5. As far as their 70's sound went, the osmonds and elvis were copying little richard.

  • elvis copied everybody, but produced a new synthesis.

  • i think you have that the wrong way around, elvis set the template for pop music that others followed, stage costumesstage moves, the big build up before coming onstage , now standard practise, ,his band two guitars a bass and drums, huge arena shows, the merchandise ,elvis did it first. its just people dont remember what the industry was like before elvis!

  • no, my point concerned purely musical production. elvis was like bach: he had the genius of assimilation, taking something from everyone and forging it into something new.

  • How could the Osmonds have been "big on TV long before the Jackson 5", and they were both basically the same age.

By the way.."One bad apple" was deliberately written and produced to sound like the Jackson 5. Donny Osmond said it himself.

P.S. I'm not dissin' on either band. They were both great.

  • Yes, the Osmonds were indeed big on TV long before the Jackson 5. The Osmond Bros. formed in 1958 and had their first TV appearance in 1962 (with Jay as the youngest member) then appeared regularly for several years on Disneyland, Andy Williams (where Donny would become the fifth member in 1963 at age 5) and Lawrence Welk. The Jackson 5 didn't even form until 1964 and didn't appear on TV until 1969 (The Hollywood Palace). MJ was 11 years old when he first appeared on TV while Donny was 5.

  • ...I should also add, that even though MJ was 11 years old, because of his size and to capitalize on being the next Donny Osmond (or the black Donny Osmond which wasn't said but everyone thought it) Berry Gordy promoted him as 8 years old. The Jackson sound was also all Berry Gordy which was a mix of Little Richard (who began as a child artist), James Brown (MJ took his shouts and dancing) and the familiar Motown Sound. This influenced the Jacksons and many other pop bands around the same time.

  • The oOsmond Brothers were on the Andy Williams show as a barbershop quartet in late 1962. The Jackson 5 started on tv in 1964.

  • .

The song "One Bad Apple" was

    written (by George Jackson)

with 'The Jackson 5' in mind. =D

It has a similar theme and sound as

"I Want You Back" by 'The Jackson 5'.

When 'The Osmonds' signed with MGM,

Records, they were sent to Fame Studios

in order to try to duplicate 'The Jackson 5.'

    .

  • White boys can dance...uh-huh!

  • believe it or not, i got to meet the whole family at the fair. My dad knew the guy who arranged security- had such a crush on Donny. Really nice people, very humble.

  • You were very lucky. I did meet Marie and Mrs. Osmond that day, but not the brothers. I agree, they are very nice.

  • @cathynel I interviewed Jimmy Osmond many years ago. He was really friendly, even left me his address. I wonder where I left that piece of paper.

  • @cathynel I met Donny and Marie a couple years ago he is hot and I'm 14

  • What recording company were they with? Because man people are saying they have the same sounds as J5(Which they kinda do) and they were offered some songs.

  • The Jackson 5 were with Motown, and I think the Osmonds were with MGM, as for the similarities I believe it was the sign of the times.

  • Is it just me or can others see the similarities between the moves and the sound of the Osmonds and the Jackson 5

  • yes there are alot of similarities, I think the Osmonds were quite an influence for them

  • The Osmonds did not influence the Jackson 5...The Jackson 5 were influenced by James Brown , Jackie Wilson , The Temptations...etc

  • looks like the dancing Elvises

  • I went to this show as a kid - were forced to wait in the blazing sun for hours as the police didn't have a clue. We finally got herded about 1/2 mile from the stage on ground level where we could see absolutely nothing!

  • cathy. theres a song for you- 1962 one hit wonder, by mike clifford, called close to cathy. you will like it.

  • I was there Aug 28 which was Wayne's(?) birthday. You must have had pretty good spot. I was clear back in the grandstand close to the top. That place was packed!

  • Without the Osmonds there would have never been Kiss their costuming is nothing less than brilliant

  • I have been noticing the Osmonds for along time. Fabulous. Love you Osmonds.

  • Donny is the coolest. The "O" Family Too.

Prayers for Kidnapped Amber 14, San Diego Please.

  • this is too cool..I was actually there! haha..at 8 years old..thanks for posting

  • Was there a day and a night show or did it spill over into night? That was during a time when state fairs were huge!

  • that was a day show..i don't remember it spilling into the nite..one bad apple was always their closing song that year..scary and odd i know all that..haha

  • There were two shows and they were there on Aug.28 and 29. The first show was at 4pm and the second show was at 7:30pm. I went every year. I have audio of the other concerts.

  • I have joked with lynjef, a great contributor of Osmond videos to this site, that it had to have been a windy day given everyone's (particularly Merrill's) big hair. I think there are or used to be clips from a 1980 show from the Ohio State fair with both the Brothers, Donny and Marie performing.

  • You're so cool dad! =] also I think i can see you on sues shoulders at 0:55?? wearing a white shirt?

  • i wish i had a white, sparkly, polyester jumpsuit like tht...

  • Osmonds caught LIVE '72! WOW!!!

  • i love that song!

  • Thanks for the video.

  • I dunno. that's true.

  • um, ok, who really cares and y r we arguing about this when both groups r VERY TALENTED......

  • sorry allentown fair person. I was at every show at every Allentown State fair-- everyone in the 70s' used pre recorded music when it was needed. also, the acoustics were not the best at the fair so things could have sounded out of whack even when it wasn't. I was lucky to be backstage during sound checks and it was a major complaint there and almost any outside arena.

  • Saw them at the Allentown Fair years ago. First band i ever saw that played along to a prerecorded tape. The tape stopped during mid song and they kept going. It was awful. They showed it on the local news.

  • Osmonds were doing early pop music on the Andy Williams show, inlcuding the dancing well before the Jackson 5 came along. YOu can't say the Osmonds copied the J5 when the JAcksons admit they studied the Osmonds on TV. Even in the made for tv movie about the Jacksons, Mr. J tells his sons to keep practicing by saying that "the Osmonds always practice, tired or not."

  • WOW! I can't believe this vid exists! How cool! I saw them in Syracuse the same year, when I saw 13. Naturally, heaven. Thanks for posting.

  • Oh yes, State Fair my town, and on my wall

  • obviously the osmonds were famous b4 the jackson 5. so if anyone's doing any copying, its j5. plus the osmonds are more talented. u dont see the jackson 5 doing any tours these days, do you? the osmonds were on tour last year and donny and marie is in last vegas doing shows. where's micheal jackson these days? dropping his baby out the window.

  • J5 debuted wayyyy before the Osmonds were on the scene. Check your facts. Osmonds were J5 knock-offs, just like NKOTB were New Edition knockoffs! Anyone/everyone in the music industry knows this, IMAO!!!!

  • Perhaps it is you who should conduct a little research before posting statements such as yours.

The Osmond Brothers have been doing their thing since 1958, whereas the Jackson Five first came about in 1964 (but didn't start recording until 1967.

  • @whiplash567 For one Micheal was not with J5 anymore, He went solo, Donny could not have made it solo there is no comparison Micheal Jackson was the most well known entertainer he is in the Guinness book of world record three times is Donny? And now he is gone. RIP Micheal

  • @angygrl Think I'd rather be alive then in the Guinness book of records.

  • no, I would say it is the other way around, the J5 were just a copy of the Osmonds. The Osmonds are so much more talented and they continue to be that now 50 years later..

  • I think they're great and have amazing talent then and now. Very much enjoy watching this video and hearing the music. Thanks ever so much for the posting!

  • They came to the ohio state fair here in columbus , ohio the year i was born how cool

  • Yeah, Phily 39, member it well.

  • yeah well i bet in this song donny didnt put out his hand lol

  • Dems fightin woids

  • I can't believe I'm seeing this. I was THERE that day!!

I was sooo in love with Donny Osmond and my mom took me to see them!

    I was 11 years old.

    thanks for sharing this vid.

  • ahh no way. lucky you!!, bet you were screaming and shouting along with them. im just 14 and i love these guys xx

  • GREAT!! And have you seen Donny in Weird Al's vidoe White and Nerdy? OMg FUNnY. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

  • they look like a gang of elvis presleys..:=))))))..lol

  • OMG!!! I was AT this concert!!!! And I remember this...!!!!! Wow... what a great trip down memory lane, LOL!

  • did you see him bump into merrill? (donny)

  • I sure did, good eyes!

  • Oh, I forgot, The Osmonds invented the bump on this very concert. Those dance moves wer totally awsome.

  • I think this was a little early for the dance called the BUMP. But. I love it anyway.

  • I was thinking Donny sounded like his voice was changing... LOL! Did you take this vid or if not, where did you get it???

  • Oh wow, thanks for mentioning lynjet7's obsession! You made me go look at her page and now I know where I can find all the Osmond videos that I could ever want!! Plus, as long as she doesn't want Donny, I'm good with her wanting to marry Merrill...heheh

  • I got no problem with that 'loriheather' the Don's all yours as long as I can have my Merrill ...... heheheh

    cheers

    Lyn (Sydney, Australia)

  • I was only four but I remember this! (I was there, too.)

  • What makes these guys so lovable? Why are they so wholesome when all those with fame like them have let their lives down the tube? How did they resist what other stars havent been able to resist? Tell me, if you know, why are their famililes so strong and happy? There has to be a reason because I look at the rest of Hollywood and want to cry for all the kid stars who have had their lives messed up by the fame. Why are the Osmonds able to be so different. Let me know if you have the answer.

  • Good solid family and support from their parents. From what I gather, they're still pretty balanced folk. In comparison with the Jackson 5, who in my opinion were far better in terms of talent, the Jacksons are pretty messed up and dysfunctional. It's a shame because it doesn't have to be that way.

  • Was at one of their concerts and it was worth every second!!

  • MERRILL I LOVE YOU, MARRY ME

Sorry guys I was not at these concerts but I sure do wish I was cause that what I would have been screaming had I been there.

Such lucky ladies to have had the chance to see the Osmonds over and over again during this period in their lives.

    Cheers

  • great

  • ok "I was there"LOL I remember how girls passed out all over the place.Even little jimmy came out in his matching outfit to sing.

  • My little sister was one of those who passed out. We were taken backstage and met Marie and Mother Osmond that day. We didn't get to meet the brothers because they were busy riding the rides at the fair. If the girls had only known that. Hee!

  • we all dicussed this and after more than a few girls passed out,we thought some of them had gotten word of those family visits how old were you then?

  • I was 12, but my sister was only 7. She was so short she couldn't get any air in that crowd. I was able to talk to Donny and Marie years later about that day and Marie remembered treating all the girls who passed out.

  • Really! you talked to them later on?cool.I was 12 also.I went with my older sister. She was 17 and was crazy about Merrill. Those were the days...Gosh I feel old.You still in Ohio?

  • wow that was when guys where guys ..no hair gel they where just perfect being their selfs.....ahhh im in love again lol.

  • Holy Crap, what a great clip! Alan was so hot when he was young!

  • You've got that right!! Alan was such a babe!!! my fav.

  • donny bumps into merril lol

  • They should kiss the Jackson Five! lol!

  • What? That was a duh comment.

  • MERRILLLLLLLL I LOVE YOU, MARRY ME

Sorry cathynel I got carried away then, each time I watch this video I keep hoping I was at this concert but I just don't remember it - of course I was not living in Oz and all but I'm sure that's what I would have been shouting nice and loud had I been there lol.

  • Poor Donny. He sounds good and all, but it sounds like he's in...pain.

Aw well, sounds good and he really belts it!

As always, the Osmonds are so good. Their outfits are the best thing ever.

  • They have unbeatable talent!!!

  • I love it...Merrill what a talent sooo sexy!!!

The Osmonds still have it...yes they do!

  • Totally agree with you womanonthinice, Merrill is sooooo fine - damn sexy man.

  • Thanks for posting that rare clip. Gosh, I was only three when that took place. Who bought purple socks because of Donny? I know I did. Ahhhh, memories.

  • Oops...the incident was at around :28 on the clip. Misread it.

  • Love the part of this clip where Merrill is backing up and Donny bumps him at around 1:04. Priceless stuff.

  • Yes, that is classic. Donny had a very hoarse voice that day, but we couldn't hear it because of all the screaming. To be able to watch this again after all these years, is just priceless to me. I was able to have Donny sign my program from this concert. Sigh...

  • I was 12. My view was the same as the camera. The date was August 28, 1972. It was Wayne's birthday.

  • Oh I love this clip they are all so young, full of life and energy and talk about sing and dance up a storm - excellent. I am green with envy of you for being there that day it must have been just so - AWESOME.

Mind you they may be a little slower and older these days (who isn't) but gee they can still capture and hold an audience, their London 2006 DVD is just great.

And Merrill he is still soooo damn fine, no one wears "grey" quite as good as he does, so distinguished just love him.

  • wow love the great colors thanks for sharing
