I'm thinking this was earlier than 1980. I was a track guard there part time in 79 and 80 and all dangerous turns were lined with hay bales and/or Firestone 500 recalled radial tires at that time. The bank in this video was still dirt.

i'd hazard a guess that his injuries were more extensive than a broken leg. that bank really stopped him fast.
