Folks, it will take a decade ( minimum ) before you critics can recite leave alone raga alapana. Just listen and enjoy. If you want to say something, say only positive things as negative comments will be carried by you to your beloved grave.
His pronunciation was better long time back but now it's terrible. I feel like getting out of the hall during the thukkada session in his concerts.
That said, his musical ideas are really good. I'm not sure about much of the technical stuff in his singing, but his swarams/neraval sound very interesting (if you can put up with his pronounciation). In the last music season, I attended 20+ concerts in Chennai and only 2 ppl sang long thanams more than once, one was Sanjay and the other was Unni.
Is it really that difficult for you negative pansies to judge an artist based on his merits, and not on his weaknesses? If every artist had the same intonation, pronunciation, and creativity as YOU want, it would take the music out of music. EVERY artist has his own style and it defines Carnatic music as it is today.
I too think his pronunciation is substandard, but his musical ideas are very unique, and I listen to this video for that.
Folks, Assuming that none of us knew kannada, malayalam, samskrita, tamil and telugu but only we had the passion to listen to good sangeeta, wouldn't we have appreciated this performance?
(Note: I put the names of the languages in English alphabetical order so as not to attract time wasting comments)
May I ask people to not argue on pronunciation. After all, who made-up all these pronunciations in our languages? It is we!!! On the other hand music is divine and has its own language.
What is important is rendering. This masterpiece does not in anyway lessen the beauty of the Carnatic music.
Long live Unni and long live Carnatic music. Thanks for posting this video.
Watch the Videos of the great Dr. M Balamuralikrishna for instance, inspite of being a telugu man, notice how he manages to deliver with such unbelievable perfection even while singing in a language that is not his own mother tongue, be it Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, Hindi, Bengali!
The contemporary vocalists must take a leaf out of his book!

Even the swara-pronunciation is terrible! Surely the swaras are not in Malayalam. For instance, Ga-Ga is guhggaaa. Such a turn off!

A beautiful rendition and good kalpana swarams
But, His pronunciation was very poor, I must admit. I know he can not be blamed as he is a malayali, attempting a telugu composition,
But a complete artist is the one who is a perfectionist in not only the way of delivery, but also the diction!
