someone has a loose wire. If it's the mechanism it'll take an hour or so to change it. I always hated changing those.

i had that,it turns out the float that measures the amount had a hole in it.easily fixed.

check your connection , it could be loose, if not you got a bad fuel sending unit

That's not oil, that's fuel. It has to be a faulty fuel level sensor.
