  • Lea Michelle sang the song beautifully. The Les Mis producers didn't see it. Although Lea Salonga, is still and will always be the best Eponine to me, I like Lea Michelle's performance too. She's amazing!

  • Where is her red cap!? She can't be potraying the role of Eponine without the red cap! That's Eponine's signature piece of clothing! Nooooooooo!

  • Ooops, forgot to say, there is a jasmine on you tube that sings this song, go check it out, she may be better than barks or michele.

  • She's very good, but Barks was the right choice.. Lea Salonga was the ultimate, but 25 years later she could not be eponine in a movie. L. Michele has a great voice, but i think Barks captures just a bit more of the volnerable element of the character. But, L. Michele does a great job, and could have done the part well.

  • She sounds better here than she does on Glee :)

  • she sounds extremely good

  • Taylor Swift is neither a legitimate singer or an actress, and while Lea Michele is no Lea Salonga (the ultimate Eponine), Lea Michele is a great fit for the role; she's better than Samantha Barks or the other Eponines. Taylor Swift might not be the worst for this role, though -- the overrated Sutton Foster already holds the record for being the worst Eponine of all time.

  • @jgroff57 the ultimate Eponine is Frances Ruffelle. Your argument is invalid.

  • @phylosaccount Of course, because she's the original.

  • I don't think Taylor Swift will bring a different approach to Eponine, she'll only bring a disaster! Can't believe they cast her over Lea Michele!

  • Get over yourselves! It s not a competition. Every person who plays a role brings something different - You may prefer another (usually the first you hear) but the pro's being discussed here are all tremendous.

  • After watching with horror the selection of reality show contestant Samantha Barks do a MOCKERY of Eponine at the 25th anniversary, why am I not surprised that the film producers picked NON-SINGER Taylor Swift over Lea Michele... Lea Michele might not be the great Lea Salonga, but at least she has a nice voice and has already portrayed Eponine. That's more practice for the role than anyone could ask for!

  • lea michele > taylor swift for this role

  • I'm not really a fan of Lea Michele but casting T.swift over her as Eponine isn't just right. And yes, she honestly did well in this video. Though Lea Salonga is still my forever Eponine/Fantine:)

  • Lea Salonga and Lea Michele is great for this role...but Taylor Swift? I don't think so...

  • Have y'all not seen the video of Lea Salonga saying Lea Michele is an amazing singer and that she loves hearing her sing? No need to compare. I think they're both amazing and they obviously like eachother as artists? Calm down people. Lol.

  • after lea salonga , lea michele is eponine.... but taylor swift?.... dear no!

  • Not that Lea Salonga isn't amazing but seriously why are people bashing Lea Michele. She may not be Lea Salonga but she is amazing in her own right. And it disgust me that the two rated comments are hateful commented toward Michele in her OWN video.

  • Lea Salonga is amazing,of course. But do people have to push others down just to say that? Is it so hard to be polite and kind while saying your opinion?Maybe Lea Michele isn't as great as Lea Salonga, but that makes Lea Michele dirt? It's not like anybody here can sing better than either of them, so therefore you have no right to hate on either.Lea Michele is talented, wether you like it or not. Lea Salonga can not be replaced. If you want to say your opinion , say it without tearing others down.

  • All you Lea Michele haters are either deaf or insane. HAVE YOU HEARD THIS GIRL SING??? There is absolutely no doubt that she's CRAZILY talented. Lea Salonga is ALSO talented. There is no point in comparing the two, but the fact remains that BOTH OF THEM ARE TALENTED.

  • can't believe that they are casting Taylor Swift as Eponine in the movie, that role defiantly belongs to Lea Michelle or Lea Salonga. this is awesome btw!

  • @bulldogStang12 Salonga is too old to play Eponine. She's 40.

  • @bulldogStang12 Jessi J isn't kidding when she says it's all about the money......and a big name like T-Swift....unfortunately ;(

  • @bulldogStang12 Only Lea Salonga. I don't like Lea Michele in this role. I will definitely not see the movie now.

  • @bulldogStang12 New Development, Samantha Barks <3 is now in the role =D

  • @bulldogStang12 Taylor Swift was booted. Samantha Barks from the 25th anniversary concert is playing Eponine!

  • @bulldogStang12 They have cast Samantha Barks as Eponine. It was just announced, recently. Which is awesome, cause I just love her. :D

  • BITCH dont be talking while shes singing disrespect

  • Chills, absolute chills! Lea will forever be Eponine!

  • Seriously what does comparing Lea Michele to Lea Salonga do for your lives? Oh & also hating on Lea Michele because you think she's DIRT compared to Lea Salonga? Um, who said she was trying to replace her? Did Lea purposely say she was better? NO. Both are two separate, different and AMAZING talents. Even if you don't like or think highly of Lea Michele, there's no doubt the girl is talented. My god, people find the dumbest things to argue about on here.

  • I think we should all be grateful that Lea Michele, Samantha Barks and Lea Salonga ALL brought unique and breathtaking elements to Eponine, considering we might have been stuck with the original Frances Ruffelle recordings had Les Mis not taken off like it did..

  • She is breathtaking. I hope so much that they don't make the terrible mistake of not casting her as Eponine in the film...

  • It's not really fair to compare any Eponine to Lea Salonga. The woman is flawless. That said, Lea Michele did a great job. And it's not shouting...

  • LEA MICHELE I LOVE YOU SOOOO MUCH AMAZING

  • Could people stop comparing Lea Michele and Lea Salonga? They're both amazing, and bring different things to the role. Lea Michele is not trying to replace Lea Salonga or anything like that. Can't we accept that they're both amazingly talented and move on?

  • Only people called Lea should be allowed to play Eponine..

  • @SnowGirl098 damn straight!

  • @ChildOfTheTardis5 <---- I would just like to point out the amount of awesome in your username. Whovians = win.

  • she sounds amazing.

  • Maybe I'm wrong...but shouldn't Eponine be about 14-16 years old? I know you can get away with older actresses on stage, but seeing Lea in two different shots of this performance, she reads much older than she does on Glee. She appears too close to Hathaway's age. In fact, Ann is 30 and Lea is 25. She sounds great, but too mature. I'd like to see them go with an unknown in the roll. Still, Lea is clearly the best of the girls in the running now.

  • Lovely lovely voice.

  • Wow. I'm sorry, but most of you are idiots. Lea was in Les Miz for quite some time. Then she went onto Ragtime and Fiddler, took some time for school, and then was in Spring Awakening. So I don't know where the hell you are all getting your information from that she hasn't done much. Also, Glee has shown many the joys of 'musicals' and introduced a new generation to theatre. Also, comparing people is a horrible thing. They're both good and I don't think either care about what you all say.

  • Some of you guys are so rude Lea Michele and Lea Salonga are both great singers so why compare them ?

  • HORRIBLE!

  • @aldrinhu how is this horrible?! It may not be your taste, or may be less impressive to you than others' performances of the song, but Lea Michele is not, by any means, "horrible."

  • I don't get the grief that some people give Lea M because she went to TV acting. Broadway actors can't go onto TV? There's nothing wrong with that. There are some Tony Award winners that have done film acting, tv acting, etc. and they haven't gotten grief, so why give Lea M the same? It's pretty much unfair now that TV actors have gotten roles on the West End and when it's an actor from Broadway/West End it's terrible? Actor's have a right to work in any format in acting.

  • I have for the last 2 hours have been watching every thing lea salonga and lea michele, and I have to say something. I love Lea Salonga, and for the first 30 minutes I was like Lea Salonga is the best but then it changed. She kind of reminds me of a robot, she doesn't convey emotion as well as Lea Michele (plus this is a crappy camera so the audio on it isn't very good). Lea Michele, I love you. I think peoples opinion vary because of the way each artist interprets it.

  • Of course ,,, Charice or Leah Salonga,,,they are both from the Philippines,,,and it really shows that Filipino is the best in terms of singing!!!

  • What the hell are people smoking? "She sings OK"? She's damn good, especially considering this is the Hollywood Bowl. For god's sake, you want atrocious? Go watch Vanessa Hudgens slay Mimi in Rent.

  • @SnowGirl098 Also go watch Sam Barks slay Eponine in the 25th concert.

  • Anyone compared to Lea Salonga will not hold a candle to her, but I don't think this is bad at all. I don't feel it, or rather I don't believe her as much as I'd like to, but I'm also always thinking of Salonga any time I hear this song haha.

  • love my lea<3 flawless!

  • I think she did well. I'm a Salonga fangirl 100%, but Ms. Michele does a good job. Don't know about that random spinning thing she does--not feeling that.

  • I love Lea Salonga, but she has some of the most horrendous and obnoxious fans on YT. :s

  • @widdlepuddyfat I couldn't agree more. Lea Salonga's Youtube fans are assholes. Lea herself would probably be ashamed of this idiocy.

  • LEA SALONGA STILL

  • Wtf? I don't see why all you morons are bashing her? Could any of you get up on stage and sing this song as brilliantly as her? I think not. So unless you prove me wrong, shut the hell up

  • And she will never be the big star that Fantine actress Ruthie Henshall is!

  • @ruthiehenshalllesmiz You nitwit! Ruthie Henshall owns the original "domestic starlet" tag, ha ha ha ha ha!

  • Lea Michele is the most untalented piece of sh*t I have ever seen on stage.

  • @janetcalicagan Why am I not surprised at all that she's had very few Broadway shows since she was 9...

  • Never been impressed with her, never liked her. An arrogant personality.

  • @annief31 Well, Lea Michele started off her career right, trying to use her talents in the demanding field of theater. But it was not picking up for her, having done only three shows from childhood to adulthood, and as you've noted she's more interested in popularity than respect, so Glee was a great option. Certainly not the best route for those who want to be respected as real and legitimate singers and actors, but it works for Lea whose dream is to get the mainstream crowd's attention.

  • @golindsay91 It's not like she has much theater cred to lose to begin with, but in her defense, the woman has to earn a living. A record of three shows since 9 years old doesn't pay the bills, and with fewer Broadway shows and more experienced and talented actors around, it ain't gonna work. Though she doesn't any respect for being on the campy show, Glee has made her a household name (at least among teens) and she still gets to sing Broadway tunes, so I think she's happy.

  • And I know that there's a troll here who's been spewing nonsense about Salonga and making Lea Michele appear like a bigger star and has been flagging comments (he doesn't have a clue that posters are entitled to their opinions), but everyone knows he's crazy, so just please ignore him! He doesn't represent us. I, and the other Lea Michele fans here, would like to enjoy the video without seeing her bashed.

  • Please STOP shredding Lea Michele to pieces! We KNOW that she's NOTHING compared to Salonga - heck, even theater veterans, who don't have her Guiness "Olivier & Tony for a single role" title and all her accolades from Europe, the Middle East, the Philippines, Singapore, and the rest of Asia, look like "domestic starlets" next to her, so what do you guys expect from a "mere" Lea Michele??? But Lea Michele is good - she can sing and act, so just please appreciate.

  • You guys are mean! My goodness! I personally prefer Lea Michele's version, especially to Sutton Foster's. And I agree the acting on glee can be a little campy, but that girl can act! Have you seen Spring Awakening? That's my opinion at least. I know broadway die-hards aren't her biggest fans, but I feel the need to stand up for my girl. I think she's amazing. And Barbra Streisand agrees, so unless you want to argue with Babs... ;)

Lol! But everyone's entitled to their opinion!

  • @Flyawayblubird sorry - I didn't mean the first part of that to sound mean! I just read it back and it sort of did! What I meant is that you guys are tough critics, not that you're mean. I don't think I could call anyone who takes On My Own this seriously mean ;)

  • @Flyawayblubird Sutton Foster had a very strange attack to the role. Her version works for her fans, but I certainly prefer Lea Michele's performance -- plus I like the sound of Lea's voice better.

  • @merriamw222 I think Lea Michele's voice is more likeable than Sutton's because it is softer, which fits the song better and which is just friendlier to the ear. Sutton's voice tends to be shrill and she attacks each song she sings as if she were a truck barreling down the road.

  • @leymiz25 My guess is that many of those who like Lea Salonga also like Lea Michele's version because Lea Michele's sound is close to Salonga's, plus her overall performance also follows Salonga's lead. I do think that while Sutton Foster is talented, she didn't get enough guidance in the role: some people have remarked that Sutton's Eponine looked like a "lunatic" and I could totally see that.

  • From now on, I'll just call her the "domestic starlet boobie girl," ha ha ha!

  • @aaprato "Domestic starlet boobie girl," lol!

  • Not impressed. But for someone whose best "acting" is baring her chest on stage ("Spring Awakening") and whose best "singing" is lip-synching to songs week after week after week("Glee"), this number is quite a revelation. She could actually perform!

  • @mdiamse You think this is decent? Check out Samantha Barks' - now, that's a real performance! Granted that Samantha doesn't come close to either Frances Ruffelle or Salonga, she blows this bitchy diva with the weak vocals out of the water!

  • @aaprato That's really laughable as Sam Barks performance is a LOT weaker and too accented. So you are WRONG there. Lea Michele is a belting soprano and that's weak? Ouch that's stupid and Sam Barks is the West End version of Cheryl Cole as she used an 'talent' tv show to get famous. So do your research and try again.

  • @mdiamse Lol! Well, she joked in an interview that she'd rather be known as a "hot celebrity" (e.g., the likes of "Maxim's sexiest women," etc.) than as a talented performer. There was obviously an element of truth in that. P.S. I would have been disgusted watching her bare it on Broadway. Yuck!

  • @annief31 Puhleez! Samantha Barks is younger and way prettier and sexier than Lea MIchele will ever be.

  • @aaprato No contest about Samantha being younger and prettier. I don't think she's "revealed" much of herself to the world, though. :-) We must give Lea M. credit for trying to be "sexy" and somewhat getting on those "hot lists"...

  • @annief31 Okay, then. Let's give Lea Michele that. She doesn't have much to offer in the way of talent, anyway, ha ha ha ha ha!

  • @aaprato You mean Samantha Barks doesn't have much to offer in talent. Lea Michele actually had Broadway experience unlike Sam Barks who used an X Factor like show to help her get to the West End.

  • @mdiamse A "revelation," indeed!

  • @joshgardell There were Youtube videos a few years ago. They might still be up...

  • Revansic: Napahiya ka, 'no?

  • Comment removed

  • She's obviously not the best Eponine and of course she does't hold a candle to Salonga, but I wouldn't call her "atrocious." She sings OK.

  • @leymiz25 Try watching Samantha 'I got into the West End the lazy way' Barks performance and you would say that Lea M is better than her.

  • Revansic the moron, ha ha ha!

  • DUH. Salonga is a multi-awarded, internationally acclaimed performer who has been around for decades and is very actively performing around the world. I doubt if this Lea MIchele starlet, who hasn't even stepped out of the US, will last even a fourth of Salonga's longevity and notable performances.

  • @ReedVans You just said in your other posting using your other identity that we shouldn't compare, yet you just did. Well, Lea Michele is a DOMESTIC STARLET compared to Lea Salonga, and professionally, Lea Michele is DIRT compared to Salonga. And unless you're their accountant, you wouldn't know how much they earn. You have ZERO credibility.

  • @sintaks29 Woah - did some imbecile just try to compare Lea Michele with Lea Salonga? Compare a talent-less "sexy star" versus a theater veteran? Crazy!

  • @aaprato That's probably the "talent-less sexy star" Lea M. herself, trolling in her videos, he he!

  • @aaprato Crazy, indeed! Imagine comparing Lea M. whose claim to fame in acting is showing her boobies and whose claim to fame in singing is doing a perennial lipsynch of songs (thanks for the apt desciption, mdiamse!) with THE Lea Salonga. How stupid...

  • @annief31 Yeah. She behaves as if she's great, when her greatest accomplishments are flashing the crowd on Spring Awakening and making a mockery of Broadway songs on that very pedestrian TV show! She should focus on developing what little talent she has, so she has something to fall back on once Glee terminates her services.

  • @royal511 Also, screw you. Spring Awakening is a brilliant piece of theatre and she didn't flash' the audience. Most people who appreciate it do not even recognize the fact that Melchior and Wendla are undressed in the slightest. And little talent? You come to me hitting a high, high d flawlessly then we can talk about who is and isn't talented.

  • @annief31 I smell a hater. Haha, U MAD?! STAY MAD. Pathetic arse.

  • @annief31 did you srsly just equate 'spring awakening' to 'showing her boobies'? lolwut.

do you guys come to watch lea m to write brutal comments about the poor girl whilst waiting for the pizza to be delivered or something?

this is fantastic btw. shame she didn't get the part in the film but that film seems to be more of a joke even before swift was cast so whatevs.

  • @aaprato You don't have to insult a TALENTED actress/singer to prove a point. #justsaying

  • @aaprato @annief31 are you an idiot Lea Michele was on Broadway first and is incredibly talented haterss

  • Someone described her succinctly: "A bitch on-cam, a bitch off-cam." A very overrated performer.

  • @sarahgfan24 Lol! It's really no surprise to everyone why this starlet Lea Michele got the "Rachel the Bitch" part during the auditions: she didn't have to rehearse the part!

  • I agree. Too "trying hard."

  • This bitchy diva really isn't that talented.

  • @aaprato Yes, and she should stick to singing those cheesy renditions courtesy of that cheesy TV show with her fellow talent-less stars who couldn't do better than to lipsynch songs...

  • @revanslc Nope; Salonga doesn't sing falsetto. You obviously don't know what you're talking about.

  • Comment removed

  • Blah, blah, blah. Excuses. Here's a tip: try looking for "headtone." And you really rely on Wikipedia for your info? What are you - an 8th grader? Come back after you've graduated from high school with your fellow Gleeks.

  • Women CAN'T do falsetto. Please study music. Moron.

  • Comment removed

  • HORRIBLE. And she's got NOTHING on Salonga - from voice quality to singing technique to acting. This is a very mediocre version of On My Own. The newcomer Samantha Barks is light years better!

  • @aldrinhu That's wrong there. I'm not even comparing Michele to Salonga because they are from two DIFFERENT generations and that I love their talents and the fact that they have had Broadway experience. You should get that hearing checked as Samantha Barks is CRAP! She used a talentless X Factor like show to help her get to the West End instead of doing it the hard way. Sam Barks has the WORST version of the song ever.

  • @yvanqwerty You are correct. While she did the weaker rendition of Salonga's version. I give her credit, however, for recognizing whose version she should emulate. She should be pleased to earn half the respect Salonga got for her work.

  • @yvanqwerty Well, Lea Michele got it right: if you're going to copy, you should copy from the best. She did have some flat notes here and there and she struggled with the high notes (she had to scream, unlike Salonga who sang the entire piece effortlessly), but I think her voice is more pleasant to listen to than the other Eponine-wannabes.

  • @luvpinoys she was belting not shouting a common broadway way of hitting high notes..... she was perfectly on pitch!

  • wow she sings it like lea salonga, wonderful

  • I LOVE LAY MIZ!

  • Comment removed

  • @squanto696969 *les mis

  • she is insane

  • @etherealrhythm she's playing eponine from les miserables...

  • @Lizbobsy Much obliged.

  • Lea does a pretty awesome job of singing On My Own, but now the song is just associated with Glee, which makes me sad. It's a life long dream of mine to even sing as Eponine. I will be eternally gratful to anyone who ever offers me that oppertunity. She is such an inspiring character, and I think she is the most amazing soul who ever roamed the world of fiction. She is my favourite, if you haven't already noticed XD

    Sorry for rambling...

  • T o o T r y i n g H a r d...

  • I think that Lea Salonga and Lea Michele each have different voices so I don't think its appropriate to compare them. I like the way Lea Michele and Lea Salonga sing it. No need for comparison!

  • Comment removed

  • Happy birthday Lea!!

  • …that made me cry.

  • It's kind of funny that she has played both of the women who loved Marius... Cosette when she was little, and Eponine when she was grown up :)

  • I like her version of it. And obviously if you guys looked at the date, this was filmed way before GLEE, so you can stop using GLEE to prove points of yours..

  • I never liked untalented performers with a bitchy attitude...

  • @aldrinhu: One question:

Do you actually know her in person ?

I believe the answer is no. In fact, you just spread your hatred from Rachel Berry (character) to Lea Michele (actress).

This was recorded even before Glee.

  • why the hell are people comparing lea michele and lea salonga? they're both amazing vocalists. & you can't compare lea to the glee cast, because not all of them are vocalists like she is. more important, i'd love for all of you with negative comments to post a vid of yourself singing this song to perfection. otherwise stfu and just enjoy this vid of lea in all of her awesome glory.

  • Comment removed

  • In fairness i really like her singing voice quality but when she sang this song, she puts too much high notes in some parts which is "really" unnecessary. And because of that, I thought this is not a broadway song... it's a pop song instead. I really hate to compare but then again, this is the real world. People will still compare singers to one and the other. Personally speaking, I like Lea Salonga's rendition more than Lea Michele. Ms. Salonga owns the unique and decorous character of Eponine.

  • But don't get me wrong okay, i like Lea Michele in her Spring Awakening. She was indeed fantabuloso!
