I thought that it was the good music for not knowing a music name then.

    It is very nostalgic.

  • takes me back. i was 12 in 1976 and i loved this tune.xxxxxxx

  • WOW, The original full version! Thanks so much for posting this version. I haven't heard this version in years. Any radio station that does play this song, Plays the shortened version.

  • one of the most underrated artist of the 70's..

RIP andrew your songs were great.

  • RIP Andrew

  • One of the great songs of the 70's...

  • An amazing song. Classic.

  • wonderful well-crafted song, nice art you left the world Andrew...

  • Thank you Andrew for all the joy you brought into this world...RIP

  • @1QuikTransAm IS THIS YOUR THEME SONG?

  • Comment removed

  • @1QuikTransAm LOLZ

  • i like this song.

    best of song.

i'm really glad i met you.

  • Boogie Nights. This song was playing when the kid was calling looking for his mother.

  • " Thank You For Being A Friend " to all your fans Andrew , RIP and sing with the choir of angels in Heaven .

  • I will add this song to my favorites. I liked it then; and I like it now! Sorry about the news I read in the top comments.

  • I just discovered this record, and it floored me from the start. What amazing songwriting/production! It just pops right out the speakers. I love the piano hook playing on the off-beat, and the chord progression in the chorus is incredible. So complex and clever in it's composition, but still pure, unadulterated pop. Love it!

  • I am sad to hear about the loss of Andrew Gold......he was fine musician ...he has many folks that loved him....This song will live forever...

  • @chubhound...not too young at all. At that age they really sense it.

  • There's something about this song that I've always wondered about. If the first kid was born in the summer of 1951, and his sister was born in the summer of 1953, then wouldn't the boy only be like 2 years old at the very oldest? Heck, depending on the month he was born and the month his sister was born, he could only be 1 1/2 years old. That's not really old enough to understand "not being the youngest" and running off to cry in your room over it is it?

  • Great song, it's way better then most of the crap music today.

  • Not sure why 00's are so afraid of this tune, but your gonna have to understand i am gonna represent...in a big way...and honestly you should be scared cause your show is gonna be over. Im not gonna kiss ass and join up, I'm gonna run you out.

  • Robert Koehler Jr. bobby7771117 To all Andrew Gold Fans: I just had to dig this 6 month comment up, because Andrew Gold's music plays a daily part in my life in a wonderful way! Also, the music he made with other musicians, and their music, as well, are vitally important to me! We love and miss you Andrew Gold!

  • @bobby7771117 One day soon, I'll tell my story about how andrew E-Mailed me back when I told him how much I loved his vocal performance on "Learning The Game."Well, Andrew E-Mailed me back, and thanked me, and how I wish I had printed it out and saved it--but that computer crashed quite a few years back--maybe the E-Mail was from about 2006 to 2008? Thanks for reading! BobbyK

  • @bobby7771117 "happened quite...." And, I told the story! Thanks! :+)

  • @steveowen2005 the stool is in front of the door

  • @steveowen2005 also the reflection of the brown coat in the mirror is black

  • Andrew we will never forget you. This song most of all captured something never to be repeated....everytime it's played its like its the first time it was ever played.....and brings just as much joy as when it was first conceived by your beautiful soul. Thank you Andrew. And thank you centuryrox.

  • Thanks for the music Andrew, thanks for the music

  • You can't fuck with Andrew Gold.

  • Boogie Nights!

  • @lukebccb took me ages to figure out what song this was since it wasn't on the soundtrack and I couldn't quite hear the lyrics in the film.

  • thats spot on man

  • Love the off beat of the drums in this song. I'm not a drummer or technical in the least so what ever one calls the beat, half step, whatever I don't know but I like it.

  • I'm probs the only 18 yr old who listens to this now..

it came on in the indoor market and I stood there like a loser singing out all the words

  • @TheCfShow don't worry about what katy perry fans think about u yer better than that!

  • @TheCfShow I'm quite a few years younger than you and I love this song - you're not alone!

  • this song reminds me of six grade. I wanted to have a best friend and I did not.

  • I didn't know he has already passed away.

    RIP Andrew Maurice Gold (August 2, 1951 – June 3, 2011)

  • Boogie Nights. When the puerto rican guy is looking for the kid's mom on the phone. It was only on for about thirty seconds. Remember?

  • @steveowen2005 , also if you look carefully his actually singing this song without moving off the chair , lol

  • stole this song from my moms ipod.

  • @DragonHeart548 I feel if it's music it's not really stealing! Right? Your mom has great taste. Take note.

  • i love this song..its one of my childhood faves..im 21..

  • @steveowen2005 That and the fact the level of the sea changes in both windows, left is higher then right and the coat is black in the reflection. Good song.

  • I'm 25 and sorry that my generation didn't grow up with such great music. This song is amazing.

  • @Supermassively I consider myself very lucky to have been on the tail end of it. I was a 2nd or 3rd grader when this was a hit, and I identified with it very strongly.

  • i love the beat that kicks in at 2:05, cant help but move your body !

  • a true classic ...loved this guy and his music.....he was much underrated and has left a fantastic musicial legacy...he had his own distintive sound and beat and a wonderful voice easily remembered...God rest his soul

  • @steveowen2005

i think also that the glass has red wint but the bottle is white wine. i think there are a few more also. His chair legs a bit short...

  • This record is indelibly printed in my mind. Thanks Andrew.

  • @steveowen2005 Some kind soul provided a link a couple years ago, listing the things wrong. It's here: classroomtools com wronglst htm Just fill in the proper punctuation.

  • @centuryrox Thanks. I have taken a look at the link. Somebody did spend some time looking at that picture didnt they? Very informative. Thanks again

  • 4 stars Short Clip

  • TOTAL GENIUS.

  • This loneyly boy learned how to fight in 1986 after joining the Army. The real fights (sadly) occurred when my US Army father would come home drunk.

  • What a stunning piece of music ! This is the first time I can hear it ! It was sadly not a hit in Poland, where I reside...:)

  • I first heard this song when I was 8 yrs. old...it has such a haunting melody that it's always stuck in my mind...I am 42 now and this was one of the first songs I sought out when I joined YouTube...love the song and always will..RIP Andrew Gold...

  • i heard this song on the water boy

  • this song has been with me since it was released back in 76 and i'm 48 now. i think i first heard it on American Top 40 and it just struck a huge chord with me. my most heartfelt condolences to Mr. Gold's family and friends. thanks for the great music Andrew! :-(

  • Love this song and i'm 14 Its FANTASTIC R.I.P Andrew

  • Today Andrew would've been 60 (Aug. 2nd). We miss you, my friend, but our lives continue to be enriched by your music and humor. RIP....

  • I have a new possibly better version of this song, but I could use better softwear to upload it. Shows how pityful the MSM is, they can't even inform the public when a talent such as this dies. What is wrong with this picture indeed. RIP Mr. Gold.

  • So SAD today to find U have left us...What a TERRIFIC no FABULOUS song !!! Your songs have grown as we have growen old..RIP...send our regards to Eric Woolfson 2 such talented musicians to depart...trust U will never be loney...boy .

  • THANK YOU FOR BEING A FRIEND X

  • SUCH.A.TUNE.

  • Thats Linda Ronstadt singing background on "We must attend to her needs, she's so much younger than you." Song really takes me back. Thanks.

  • I close my eyes and here this and I'm transported to the summer of 1976 and think of all the people and things in my life back then. To be a teenager,so young and all the great times with all my friends and family. What a great time it was. I miss it so.I may be old but something is lacking in todays music. It has no soul or meaning. It's plastic and cheaply made today.

  • @RetroTony1959

Summer of 76 was red hot wasn't it? I remember spraying a car, and when the paint hit the metal it boiled! Music like this stood out over the electronic junk clapping machines that was starting to invade our transistor radios and 8 track cassettes.

  • @slaynt Yes friend,i sure was. I was driving that summer for a company in Downtown L.A. and use to hear this song every day driving around L.A.and I also "Afternoon Delight" playing at the same time. If I only had a time machine. What area were you at in those days?

  • @RetroTony1959 Was it hot in the States as well? I didn't know that. I was living more or less in the center of England. We had to go to a central water mains delivery point in town to get whatever water we could carry, as they had cut off the water supply to houses. Trees all went brown and lost their leaves by June. So much for Global Warming being a new thing.

It was about then that I worked at a recording studio in Wales setting it up for XTC to record one of their hits.

  • @slaynt It was Rockfield Studios in Monmouth.

  • @slaynt Not really. The 70's were moderate hot but I have to say it is really super hot these last 10 years like i've never seen before. I sure wish I could visit England. I love British History and TV.

  • @RetroTony1959 I agree with that statement as well! :)

  • Oh no....I've found a gold mine of my favorite old music from my youth....I am never leaving.

  • RIP Andy Gold

  • Oh what a lonely boy -

    R I P Andrew Gold :'(

  • One of the best songs ever!

  • Wow, can you imagine how toe idiots must feel. Poor little losers. 528 people like it including me, but 4 little losers thumbed it down. I wonder what their little pitiful story is. I KNOW, they where probably the lonely boy. to many brothers and sisters I guess. LEARN TO LIVE WITH IT!

  • Being adopted, I always felt this song was a good take on my childhood.

Two older sisters and always felt not cared about or loved enough by my parents.

And the fact that Andrew Gold and I shared the same birthday made it special as well.

  • Thank you Andrew for all the happiness your music brought to this world....RIP.

  • That is sad and he will definitely be missed. R.I.P. Andrew!

  • I didn't know that Andrew Gold had passed away. How long ago and what of?

  • @BloodRocker3034 He passed away from heart failure on June 3, 2011. RIP Andrew.

  • @centuryrox OMG, IM SAD NOW...

  • This is a great song and one of my all time favorites. Very sad to hear that he passed away. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends. God speed, Andrew.

  • The lyrics and song writing are unmatched. RIP Andrew Gold

  • yh i heard this one the radio, so i came here to listen again and again :-)

  • I freaking love this song

  • Maybe I overanalyzed this song but something doesn't seem to make sense to me. The kid cries when his sister is born therefore having to share his parent's love. The story then continues with his sister having a son and the chorus repeats. It seems to me that the storyline would continue through his offspring. Just saying.

  • @bthor76 Yes!

  • @candelise Yes to what exactly?

  • @bthor76 Oh dear, what you're statement said was what I was referring to!! Having said that, being his sister a pattern develops with her too. Is that clear enough?

  • @candelise How about this...you're an asshole...is that clear enough for you? You reply to my comment with one word "Yes" although I didn't ask a question and you get cocky when I ask you to expand on that. You must be a joy to live with. Let me develop a pattern here by repeating what I previously wrote; You're an asshole.

  • @bthor76 I thought that what you said was quite obvious, hence the 'yes'. However, from one asshole to another, sensitive soul aren't you? Considering that I was agreeing with what you said originally.

  • there are few performers and artists like Andrew Gold these days

    Tom S

  • One of my faves of all time...See you in Heaven, Andrew,

    Eli

  • coooooool

  • Jammin and rockin with the other greats in heaven RIP Andrew.

  • I loved this song from the "Boogie Nights" soundtrack.

    RIP, Andrew Gold.

  • Andrew, although I didn't know you personally, thank you for being a friend.

  • I already liked the song, this version is the clearest, and this presentation especially for the lyrics is the best at YouTube imo.

  • Has always been one of my favorite songs. What a crappy thing it is to hear of his way too early death. What a extraordinarily talented man he was. The good die young.

  • R.I.P. Andrew Gold, your music is truly amazing.

  • Holy fuck this was great. Way too soon to die!!!!!

  • @emmtampa My sentiments exactly!!! Great! Great! Song!!!!

  • good choon..Forgot how good it was sad to hear of his death

  • Dear Andrew: You will be greatly missed by all of your fans! This album helped me get through a break-up with the first woman I truly loved, and wanted to marry--yes, I was too young, and in college--a junior--but I must have played parts, and the whole album hundreds of time to get through the sorrowof the break-up! Thanks for this masterpiece, Mr. Gold! Love, BobbyK

  • I'm pretty sure this song got me a $500 speeding ticket. RIP Andrew Gold.

  • R.I.P. ANDREW GOLD...SORRY TO HEAR OF YOUR SUDDEN DEATH..THIS WILL ALWAYS BE A SONG TO REMEMBER..

  • R.I.P Andrew Gold, i'm 19 but i think your music was amazing x

  • R.I.P your music has great memories for me as i was growing up! superb. Steve :)

  • When I first heard this song in 1977, I were a sophomore in high school, on a friday night, and now I am 51 years of age, to hear the untimely death of Mr. Gold sadden me, my prayers goes out to his family, The song Lonely Boy, my all time favorite. R.I.P. and you are not alone.

  • Your songs brought lots of love and happiness in my family.

My favorite songs will always be "Lonely Boy"", "Stay", "Never Let Her Slip Away", "Right Between These Eyes" and "Bridge To Your Heart".

    R.I.P., Andrew

  • RIP Andrew.

  • Great songwriter, great sense of humour. An Anglophile, (he preferred the British version of the Office over the US version for example) and melded US pop perfectly with hints of the Beatles and other 60's UK groups.

  • @DaveBond21 Same here, I don't get a dern thing from the US take on The Office. The UK version's a corker.

  • The lonely boy. RIP Mr. Gold. My condolences to family. To hear these "songs" in one's mind is a burden. That song will always bring a tear, .... may fortune favor the artist!

  • A wonderful, bittersweet song and video. So many memories, I cannot truly count. When I heard of Mr. Gold's passing, I was very much reminded of the Asian Proverb: Talent does what it can; Genius does what it must. Thank you, Andrew, for being part of our lives and lending your immense talent. Peace. Namaste. God Bless. My sincere thanks to the poster of this great video. Bear.

  • Another fine artist off to heaven to play for the angels.....RIP Mr Gold

  • One of my all time favorites...of course it was the most wonderful time of my life being with the love of my life. So many good memories.

  • You won't find many tunes better than this classic. How it didn't hit #1 is beyond me.

  • WAS SORRY TO READ ABOUT ANDREW GOLD'S PASSING. HEARING THIS SONG BRINGS BACK BITTER/SWEET MEMORIES FOR ME. WAS THIS HIS OWN ACCOUNT OF HOW IT FEELS FOR THE ELDEST CHILD (WHEN ANOTHER BABY COMES ALONG?)FEELING SOMEWHAT SECOND BEST. WITH BRILLIANT SONGS LIKE THIS HIS HE'LL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN. RIP ANDREW,

  • R.I.P Mr. Gold.

  • his legacy -his music will last far after his passing. love this song. godspeed.

  • Good Night Andrew. I will surely miss you. You sang about what I felt.

  • I use to like this song when I was little girl. I was 5 when this song came out. I still like it 33 years later. I heard about his death. What a tragic loss. RIP Andrew Gold

  • RIP Andy.

  • RIP Andrew and thanks for the memories

  • Why 70's and 80's music was so good?

  • @titohuertas They used real musicians that had talent and ability back then, as the 80's came around computers, drum machines and MIDI keyboards took the place of real musicians in the studios. Now its all auto tune and pro tools that can make the most untalented singer sound good.. notice how everyone today sounds virtually the same. now it is all about theater, not talent

  • I agree with you. Virtually everyone, with or without musical talent, can get out there and make some noise. That is the reason why I don't pay any attention to modern music anymore, or pop culture in general. With very few exceptions, everything, from TV to books, that is been made in the last decade is crap. American "poop" culture really sucks. It's a matter of choice. I'd rather go back and watch "Rich Man Poor Man" than the Jersey Shore.

  • this is in a book worst rock and roll records of all time

  • @MichaelHansenFUN (unfortunately)

  • Wow, this takes me back. Was saddened to hear that he passed away. : ( Thanks for the great memory centuryrox
