  • What a pair !

  • I didn't know how gorgeous Shirley was.

  • @jemorrismmorris absolutely. A timeless beauty. Still is too!

  • Tony did not have a big ego; although the most talented human being I have ever met he was very insecure. He was sweet, gentle and there will never be anyone to match him.

  • Why do some people speak so negative about someone's ego. Anthony Newley was a great talent. And where would the human race be without our egos. Nowhere I suspect.

  • Are there any other videos of Shirley singing that last song on Youtube?

  • @Hapathy There are plenty of other videos of her singing this as it was her first Nr 1 hit in the UK 1959, it's called As I Love You, 2007 was the last time she sang it.

  • I love the way even a massive ego like Newley realises he cant follow Bassey singing As I Love You - very funny

(how does she sing to that standard of perfection just sitting in a chair?? It doesnt seem humanly possible)

  • What is this video from?

  • Wow, she makes it look so easy to belt one out.

  • @IDmadge

Even today at the age of 72 Shirley can still belt it out and even more powerful now. No one can do it like she can!

  • Shirely's song towards the end really reminded me how beautiful life is with music.

  • Great stuff! Thank you for sharing :)

  • As great a song writer as he was a singer. They broke the mold when they made Tony, definitely one of a kind.

  • he looks so handsome and she is so sweet and pretty..this is a great clip..thanks !!

  • Two young talented British singers and songwriter. He was very talented and left this world far too early. Thankfullly Shirley is still going strong and a veteran now.

A great video. Thank you .

  • This is wonderful!

  • Yes, Rosana, you can find Tony's rendition of "Goldfinger" (the lyrics of which he wrote with Lesley Bricusse) on youtube too. He did not "belt" it like Shirley did.

  • I love this! What wonderful clip. Dame Shirley is an absolute dream. This is so precious. Anthony Newly is a real cutie! This is priceless! Thanks for this post. Thanks for sending it to me Jonas!

  • Fantastic! Early Shirley at her best!

  • What a superb video reminder.

And then 46 years later when she was 70 !, Shirley Bassey opened Glastonbury and still created a sensation.

  • Thanks so much for posting. Newley was terrific and so under-rated. La Bassey looks and sounds fabulous!!

  • when she goes into As I Love You its like

    ...woooow!!

  • No - it's like WOOOOOW!!!

  • I think Tony could never believe his luck. It shows in everything he does. always the little man.

Fair well Tony Newley, you made it. Too late for me, but someone else ... who knows?

    You!

  • do you not have anymore of them singign together??

  • Sadly no

  • Wonderful slice of pop history. Thanks for posting.

  • He and Joan Collins, a few years after their divorce, became great friends and co-parented two wonderful children (their son, Sacha Newley is a dead ringer for Tony)...interesting that it's because of Tony selecting Shirley for 'Goldfinger' that Joan Collins made herself a lifelong friend.

  • lol365,

I heard a different story: Joan's father was Shirley's agent at a very young age, and that's when she and Joan became friends. I think that may pre-date the point at which Shirley met Anthony (after he met Joan).....But boy, could Shirley sing, even at the tender age of 24, here in 1961!

  • I'd never heard that, but Joan's father was quite a prolific agent in London so I don't doubt that it could be true! How interesting! In any case, Joan, Tony and Shirley are all fabulous.

  • made a good husband for Joan Collins!

  • What year was this?

  • 1961

  • Anthony Newley was a great Guy,so talented...and he and Shirley were friends for many years. To see this clip is a real treat ! Thanks.

  • Nice going! Where did you dig this one up? Weird how it predicts Bassey's cover of 'Goldfinger' drowning out Newley's, about five years later.

  • How true, that is a good catch!

  • @Bklyn4ever oh, he sang Goldfinger too?
