@alicepotter Oh my goodness... why have I never thought about the song that way! I always imagined it as Regina singing, but you're right, it's a rapist singing ... which honestly makes the song make so much more sense... thank you for the imput! Now to triple-million click the repeat button.
@potatoesplanks: "why shouldn't it be me" is simply describing how the rapist tries to rationalize his upoming actions. Why can't I have her? Why is it so wrong? A sick thought. This song is amazing. So scary!
Only Regina could write a song about rape from a rapist's point of view, and still manage to make it sound sexy without losing the dark aspect of it. How she manages to slip into the skin of so many different characters and personalities and authentically capture their mindsets is beyond me. Now I'm not sure if a male artist could write such a song without catching flack for it.
yes i think that her early stuff is more fit to her way of being. the last albums are beautiful, so upbeat, but this is so unlike anything else. she is my hero:):):)
@ritapham why do you think that? at first i thuoght she was just jealous of that pretty girl. it does seam a little eerie. but how did you think of that?
"Don't put a stumbling block in front of someone who can't see
Don't put a beautiful body in front of someone who's hungry,"
And when she sings: "Why shouldn't it be me?...her body was free" He's saying why can't he be the man to have her? Her body was free means he can take her without permission if he wanted to.
Also "I wasn't even her first so don't blame me"
I think it's definitely about a rapist but if you have other theories would love to hear em.
Regina is very popular for creating characters and stories with her music. I seriously doubt that this song is based off some encounter she actually had....especially since I'm fairly certain the man she's singing as is trying to justify raping a really pretty girl... O.o
I read somewhere that this was from a older man's point of view about a younger woman, and if it's not it definitely seems like it could be. Especially the line,"
Don't tell me what's proper
Anyone can see
I wasn't even her first, so don't blame it on me"
You do realize that there is no correlation between being religious and gay, sure some people may hide the fact that they are gay because their fellow conservatives may not accept them, but that does not mean they are gay. Being gay is not a choice it is something you are born with. For example I know a gay Rabbi.
there are people that read the bible that aren't religious or affiliated with christianity. there are people that read the bible for literature purposes and those that read it for historical purposes. a lot of musicians similar to regina spektor has some form of reference to a religious text.
That is apples and oranges. Being religious and being gay having nothing to do with each other whatsoever. I don't think she is religious. You don't need to be religious to allude to the Bible. I also don't think she's gay. She makes just as many references to boys as she does with girls. It's because her songs are about characters most of them time, not herself. Besides, does it even matter?
One thing I love about regina is that you always feel like you're on the cusp of understanding the meaning..but can't QUITE grasp it. haha..she's such a tease buts its great. this song is a perfect example of that.

I'm Only 11 And Most Of My Friends Almost Peed Themselves When I Showed Them Reginas's Music Because They Found This Song Hilarious. But I Still Think She's Amazing.
She's very private about her personal life, and like you said, it doesn't really matter what her orientation is. Maybe that's why she doesn't talk about her personal life in interviews and stuff. I don't think Regina is gay, because she has made a few comments that lead me to think she likes boys, but you never really know. Most recently, she told an interviewer that she finds Leonard Cohen sexy. And the interviewer was like, um awkward balloon and Regina said "Maybe it's a Jew Thing" teehee.
@ScarletsBeautifulLie You know, there is a thing out there, called bisexuallity. There's also pansexuallity. Sexuallity is never black and white, there are many shades of gray.
I don't know, but I don't think so. I read somewhere that none of her songs are autobiographical: they're all based on characters and scenarios that she's come up with. I don't really mind that none of it's "true", it's still beautiful poetry. :o)
@MorningUgly I honestly don't think so. During one interview, she said she likes to right from the point of view of men because they're so fascinating. I think that's what she did in this song.
i totally agree!!! the first time i heard this song i was like omg this doesnt sound like fidelity at all but i like this song so much more then any of her other mainstream songs, i love samson,
Me too. I think that's why her label (with her agreement, possibly) puts out the most "radio friendly" songs. If she put this out as a single for example, some people wouldn't get it. You have to appreciate it...that's why she has so many true friends who understand her and her music.
this song gave me the chills the first time I heard it like a couple years ago. Still gooood.
"heerrr smillee was croooked and good" lol. love that part.
I agree. I discovered a whole new genre and love through regina. I live in australia, until fidelity her songs were never played on the radio, and then only on less mainstream ones. she was on our one and only late night show and preforemed fidelity (really good live version; search regina spektor rove) and played downloaded the song. Anyway, regina is not just a singer, she is a poet, and while i'll always love songs like fidelity and that time, they can't compare to some of her others. :)
This is an amazing song. I hate it that most of her songs that have deep and beautiful lyrics take a back seat to songs like "Better" and "Fidelity" Not that I don't like ether of those songs, I love them both, I just wish people would appreciate songs like this too.
This is exactly how I feel. When I mention her music, people are often like, "Oh, I like her! Especially Fidelity and The Call". And while I like those songs, it's almost like we're talking about different artists. This song and Fidelity are worlds apart.

But she keeps saying 'why shouldn't that be me?'
I thought this song would be more about envy towards the pretty girl rather than lust.

She is not gay, i'm 99% sure. Almost every song she sings (if not every one) has religious references.
Samson, the call, laughing with god, fidelity exc. Listen to the lyrics more closely...Some like samson require bible knowledge however =P
