I believe that the new user stance on boot time is "if it boots faster, it runs faster", while clearly that makes no sense, it IS how people thing. So users switching to Ubuntu 10 from Windows, will say "this is really fast compared to Windows". I think that's exactly where Ubuntu were going with this...
Windows or osX are, overall, easier to use than Linux distros. The average computer user wants simple and easy to use products, no matter what they are.
I've tried many Linux distros, and continue to avoid them due to the necessity to use the old-school command line interface in order to customize the various user tweakable aspects. It will always be this way no matter how many Linux geeks promote it.
Almost everything is installed via command line, unless its in the repositories and then its just a mater of searching for the right named files.
The average person is not computer-literate enough to live on a linux system unless they've spent a lot of time reading or in a class. Windows, and to a smaller degree Mac, have made it easy for people to use their computer. Linux? Not so much.
Note: I use jaunty as my main OS, and also use #! (crunchbang) linux and also Arch on a regular basis.
Great show guys. I think your dialog about the new MS Win7 OS and how Linux will compete was fair and balanced. I am writing this on an Asus 1000HA with 2GB RAM. Of course it came with XP, which was fine, but I wanted something with a bit more flash, so I gave eeebuntu standard a shot. I really wanted it to work, but the choppy video, intermittent fall off of my wireless connection, and the compbiz freeze ups just proved to be too intolerable. Out of curiosity I installed Win7 build 7057,
continued. and honest to God, everything works. No video freeze up, no internet connection drops, and even the built-in webcam works! At this moment I have your show playing on YouTube, Office 2007 Word and Excel open, all of which takes less than 1GB of RAM to support. This is a vast improvement from Vista. Now I dont have a problem giving eeebuntu another shot down the road once theyve cleared up the problems I listed, but for this moment, Win7 simply runs better on my Asus.
have they reached the target yet? chris still has a beard in the current shows! :p

I think if you are still and enduser you should get Linux pre-installed. Basically because the hardware variants still too unstable.

command line is absolutely NOT a necessity to use linux.

You are so right! When I started with Linux (with Ubuntu 7.10) I didn't know any of the commands or what a terminal.
