Thats why this prophetic poem is amazing. Because there is a power in prayer, but far to often as you say, it is used as an excuse. This poem in its entirety says, "Pray like it all depends on God and live like it all depends on you". Wow. If that truly happened, it would have more effect than either of two on their own.

One pair of hands actually helping

is worth more than a million pairs of hands clasped in prayer.

Prayer is an excuse to stay comfortably at home

while feeling like you are helping others.

Prayer is nearly always a substitute for getting involved.

Or, in the case of praying for the sick,

a substitute for common sense.
