  • Good list. I would have to include "Rise of Nations" in my list, so many varied units and abilities across cultures and time.

  • DA FUQ? I agree WC3 is a really good game, but WC3:TFT > WC3:ROC in everything. TOC was too imbalanced. Now... WC3 in general is awesome, but SC:BW is actually way better. And Age of empires, OMFG what is wrong with you? Even Warcraft 2 was way better than any AOE game.

  • @taqueshi1337, remember that everyone feels differently about the games they play. If you talk to enough RTS fans, you'll meet plenty who think AoE2 should be #1 (in fact, if you search through the comments, I guarantee you'll find more than your fair share).

  • I still remember watching the trailers for Reign of Chaos and feeling randy. Man that game was above all my high expectations, so unlike all the rts games of 2010-2012.

  • Huh i was surprised to see that you didnt put warcraft 2 on the list, it was the one strategy game that got me moroe hooked than starcraft.

  • i have axis and allies but cant play online says my cd code is used by other people but i have the box and everything for it the games fun but i cant play online cause of there dumb system

  • I love all the games you mention! Wc3: RoC is the ultimate no. 1 for me too. Been playing it for almost 10 years now since the release. The story is simply magical.

  • I grew up with starcraft you have a like from me!!

  • Meh , these are mostly arcade rts games... I rather really heavy tactical ones.. but nice list

  • You have both Total Annihilation and Homeworld in your list... and you didn't make Starcraft your number 1 choice. I want to fucking hug the fuck out of you! This is a great list!!!

  • @jasonromulus, O_O *flee*

  • @ZhangtheGreat Don't run from the hug! You'll only die tired!

  • Omg... good old times... I loved C&C series, Dune, WarCraft ,StarCraft, TA... those are part of my life :P

  • My personal top 10? 1.Total Annihilation (I love when my units walk and shoot at the same time <3 game of my childhood.) 2.Starcraft (Epic is just epic, another from my early years. I was 7 when the title went out...) 3.KKND:Krossfire (Yes my chieftain!) 4.Red Alert 5.Dune 2000 6.Age of Empires (Yeah, the first one) 7.Supreme Commander 8.Original War 9.Populous 3:The beginning 10.Netstorm!
  • @DesolationAeoris, your top ten is AWESOME! The only game I don't like is Populous, but I do understand its appeal.

  • @ZhangtheGreat Have you ever played Netstorm then? :) Each game from my list is unique. Uhm... You can only compare Supreme Commander to Total Annihilation, as the second is first predecessor.

  • @ZhangtheGreat Oh, btw. At the introduction to your top 10... Is it music from Warcraft II?

  • @DesolationAeoris, you know your music =)

  • The first RTS games i ever played was Dark Colony and AoE2

I liked Dark Colony more than AoE2, because it's a lot of fun! unfortunately i can't find dark colony to buy/download nowdays

  • @Authelgen, either you're a troll or you need anger management, and THAT is a fact =)

  • @Zhangtheloser No I'm just a critic that knows better than you.

  • @Authelgen, maybe, but you certainly have a childish way of showing it. Constructive criticism = you know better. Childish bashing = you need to grow up.

  • @Zhangtheloser Actually I only bash those that deserve it. You clearly do.

  • @Authelgen, "only games I like are awesome, and everything else is shit." That's the message you're sending. Someone needs to return to elementary school and learn a thing or two about critical thought, as well as how the word "fact" differs from "opinion." Maybe I should have a talk with your English teacher for failing to get that lesson through to you.

  • @Authelgen fuck company of heroes dawn of war kicks ass

  • @Authelgen You just said that total anihilation is shit. It is considered as one of the best RTS ever, well you must total idiot.

  • O_O woah! Very nice list! =) And yes im a RTS fan :P I played alot of RTSgames. The very first RTS game ive played was/is the first C&C O_O

  • Oh man, as soon as Total Annihilation came up on screen I fistpumped and thought this guy knows what he is talking about! Such fond memories of vsing my bro over LAN and getting my ass kicked by him... Actually that was just a few weeks ago.

  • cought!...Rise of Nations...cought!

And warcraft now has the Frozen Throne expansion!!!

  • @WhiteBaron777, RoN = cut. Expansions were disqualified (reread the rules).

  • Ohh the Red Alert... good thing i have it for PS1 (Retaliation)

idc about graphics, this game is still a kick-ass !

  • I agree with Sindrake. I was with you until you listed WC3 as number one. Yet I do have to say you put together a pretty good list here and introduced me to a couple that I'm most certainly going to give a shot, thanks for that. This is just what I was looking for. At any rate, thanks for doing this almost half a decade ago! Pity I'm just now discovering it. /facepalm

  • Great. EE1, AoE, DoW, CnC RA made this list awesome

  • Why leave it to such ancient games?? Generals has been around for 8 years now with several actively developed fan based expansions like Contra 007 and Shockwave. Is that not enough time?

  • @Christobanistan, this list was made in 2008. Do remember that when thinking about the amount of time passed.

  • great list

  • Nooooooo!!! you had me until you showed Warcraft 3 as the Number 1, that game reaked.... Warcraft 2 was better in my opinion,... I agree completely with ranks 10 to 2, but number one should definately be Praetorian's,. Damn awesome Dos game should be viewed by all

  • Sorry zhang :-)

  • Great but Total war should be on the list.

  • @DzekoCity10, video description =)

  • @ZhangtheGreat my bad

    good list then

  • nice list. i like nearly all of the games :D but warcraft3.... no me gusta :P just saying :)

and you could talk about starcraft, i don't think a lot of ppl know any koreans :P nice job dude!

  • @THEovstis, haha, no worries about not liking War3. Not everyone does and that's completely fine.

As for SC, you don't really have to be Korean to know about it. After all, a game doesn't stay at its peak for 12 years without garnering at least SOME attention, wouldn't you say? =D

  • @ZhangtheGreat

yes :P ty for answering :D

  • come on a c&c game you can build alot of units theres no limits

starcraft game just 200 koreans assholes

  • @Gatecrusherify, aww, that's not very nice =)

  • Non of the total wars are on here -.-

  • @MrPandaRTWJr, video description =)

  • @ZhangtheGreat True, the world map is turn-based, but the actual battles are NOT. Seeing as how the WWII mode on Axis & Allies (great game, btw) is of the same structure, I believe it would be unfair to turn down one while accepting the other. Total War also has a game mode separate from the grand campaign mode in which you are put into real historical situations with units already given to you and never even see the turn-based world map.

  • @DerAlleinTiger Come to think of it, I think there was an option in Medieval II: Total War for the world map to be in real time. I'm not sure on that as I haven't played it in awhile and I'm not sure if it has been in any of the newer Total War games; but I think I remember myself pondering whether I should turn it on or off. I might just have to reinstall it and check it out myself because now it's killing me.

  • @DerAlleinTiger, I turned down Total War because its games were listed as either "real-time TACTICS" and/or "turn-based strategy." None were labeled "real-time strategy" on Wikipedia at the time this video was made. If it's changed since then, oh well.

I used Wikipedia to draw the line between strategy and tactics. They're not always right, but they're useful when I need to draw that line so I don't have to sort through thousands of games.

  • So many great games on this list, although Total Annihilation was my favourite! ... taught me how to spell annihilation too....

  • Have to agree on nearly all. There is no more fun than to (still) play lan games with Age of Empires and Starcraft (1, since its impossible to play lan with SC2) with my siblings when they camp here around every new year. I just only prefer Warcraft 2 to be better than the number 3, and Red Alert Aftermath before the classic Red Alert game, but who cares :P

  • I would have to say Dune 2 was the best RTS of its era, considering I ran it on a 467SX-25 motherboard with one Mb RAM, and was the predecessor of the C&C franchise. It's partly responsible for my average grades in High School. Populous was also very, very good gameplay for its day. I had it on my 8-bit Sega.

  • calling people fanboys and being condesending on Starcraft (statistically the most tournament played RTS ever) makes you look like a bad.

  • @NoxPally, I was talking specifically to the fanboys, since I know they lurk from video to video bashing anyone who doesn't think their precious SC is #1. If you think this automatically means I don't like SC, you couldn't be more wrong.

  • @ZhangtheGreat

I can agree with most of your assessments; however, I don't agree with your number 1. Obviously, Warcraft 3 is your personal choice, and it is a fantastic game. Company of Heroes is my choice for number 1. While limited in the armies you choose, its sheer variety of different units plus a fair ammount of realism (armor facing reducing damage, shots possibly bouncing, mass artillery strikes, off map strategic options).

You can't just build 1 unit type and win.

  • @Alamandorious, well, everyone has their reasons as you can see. What I love about WC3 is its gameplay variety. Winning can be done in multiple ways: heroes or no heroes, small or slightly larger armies, etc. Plus, the limitless creativity that WC3 provides players stands out above the rest. Several user-created games (most notably DotA) have been born from WC3 alone. Throw in a fantastic story and deep single-player campaigns and you can see why it's ranked at the top.

  • @ZhangtheGreat

Mmm, true enough about WC3. However, it lacks a level of detail that I prefer, plus CoH has several different ways to achieve victory (namely, which commander path you choose, and how you spend your points as you get them) as well as offering multiple different ways to combine efforts with your partners in multiplayer (airbourne troops from one player supported by heavy artillery from an infantry commander, for example).

  • @Alamandorious, CoH actually wound up at #11 on my list. I really didn't want to cut it, but something had to go =(

  • @ZhangtheGreat To each their own ^^

Like I said, I agree with most of your list, but as you stated everyone is going to have their own criteria for choosing :)

    About Dune 2:

The only thing I didn't like about Dune 2 was there was an overall unit cap...basically, once you built so many units, and they died, eventually you couldn't build more. This usually happened about to me at the last level. Still, one of the most enjoyable games.

Oh! What did you think of Dark Reign?

  • @ZhangtheGreat you try to juxtapose SC with AOE a game which has done literally nothing for the industry or genre it calls into question the validity of the entire video. RTS is real time strategy, not "man these campaigns are sick DERP". RTS is the sense that the game can evolve and adjust within a match not that DERP the graphics are nicer and you cant honestly sit there and claim that AOE had even a remotley similiar meta game or was able to adjust to Real time strategy (DUR DERP) like SC

  • @NoxPally, opinion duly noted. It's nothing I haven't heard before. I hope you've talked to more RTS fans than just those who feel SC is the best, because there are plenty of people who'd rank AoE2 at #1 based on overall enjoyment of gameplay.

I happen to enjoy AoE2's gameplay and design slightly more than SC's. If that's a crime, then call me guilty.

  • Great list! The list only contained two games I have yet to play: Homeworld and Warhammer.. Personally, I think your list is spot on with those two exceptions (I cannot rate something I haven't played)

  • for anyone asking what music he played or is gonna ask at first i couldn't tell but when he got to aoe i knew he was just using the music from the respective games so no need to ask now be quiet.

  • I honestly think that DoW needs to be higher on the list. Ive played everyone of the games in the video and while some are good.. Dawn of War does more than just let you play in 3rd person. You are able to rotate the camera into a view that lets you actually feel like you are in the fight. Not just watching it. It also has a fantastic story line if you pay any attention at all or have read the book. Also it easily has the best graphics and the AI don't just sit in one spot. They actually attack.

  • Can you pray tell me what soundtrack plays when you showed Homeworld?

  • I loved army men rts

  • im currently trying to find a rts game i played when i was young, i forgot the name, if it was on windows 98 or xp but i do remember that its modern military like you can build bases and you need to make oil drills, and i remember only playing 3 levels but the first 3 levels were very dark like night time. i would appreciate if someone can name RTS that fit this description. I want to play it but it seems i lost the disk because when i was younger my parents took it away because i played to much

  • @blackwingz55 it might've been KKND

  • @brbracing KKND is such an underdog RTS ... I loved that game (past tense because I can't get it to run on Vista)

  • How can anyone NOT think WC3 is the best RTS of all time? Amazing ladder system(unlike DoW) thousands of strategies into which the heroes perfectly correspond, thousands of custom games, some of which people copied into FULL games that they charge for... The ability to create your own games, and the clans/icons/attributes/percentages/tournaments.

  • AOE 2 should be first. but i'm about to see what no1 is so i may change my mind.

  • :| Starcraft

    :) AoK

    :D Empire Earth

:3 CNC RED ALERT! First game I EVER played.

  • Even though sc2 aint there, sc is 3rd atleast we bet warrhamma!!!

  • So happy to see Warcraft 3 as number one. Its top of my list, ever so slightly above starcraft

  • hey cn you name a few rts games with very very very crappy graphics cuz they might be bad but ya know i still feel like a good rts once in a while something like age of epmpires 2 graphics or something ....

  • @SC2awsome, graphics have never mattered to me. Gameplay comes first and foremost.

Besides, since when has it been fair to judge all games by today's graphics? Games released 10-15 years ago never had access to the technology and resources available today. The only fair way to judge graphics is to hold those games up against what was available at the time. If they used all the available resources to the best of their ability, then their graphics must be considered outstanding.

  • @ZhangtheGreat No expansions? So you can't include the number one RTS game ever, Starcraft: Brood War? That's dumb.

  • @AEgamesFtw, no it's not "dumb." Expansions would be useless without the full games. That's why they were excluded.

  • @ZhangtheGreat and sometimes full games would be "useless" without their expansions. You think starcraft would be where it was today, if they didn't bring out brood war to balance and drastically improve it?

  • @AEgamesFtw, difference is you can still play the full games without the expansions, whereas the vice-versa isn't true.

As for SC, yes, I think it's a killer game by itself. That's why I ranked it 3rd on my list. Brood War made it better, but it was already epic.

If a game needed its expansion to be great, it would've been kept off the list altogether. No game deserves a top ten if it was that dependent on expansions.

  • @ZhangtheGreat Then, I dont think Starcraft should be on this list without its expansion. Or, you should just add the expansion and bump it to number one. Without Brood war, it would just have been imbalanced, unplayed and wouldn't have any of the metagame or competitive player base that made it the great game it is.

  • @ZhangtheGreat without brood war the original starcraft would have faded away long ago

  • @Peekayismad, shoulda, woulda, coulda. It's all speculation. History is what happened, not what might have happened.

  • warcraft THAT GAME SUCKED SO BAD. DOW IS THE BEST RTS EVER IF U GET TO NO POP CRACK

  • @killer69rr2, amazing how some people think typing in caps increases the size of their penis =)

  • @ZhangtheGreat WHAT? :P

  • dow is the best rts ever

  • lol warcraft 2 music

  • dune 2000 is the best rts ever

  • Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars kicks the shit out of any game in the Starcraft series :P

  • @HL2man3745 Too bad CnC went to shit after EA got their money hungry hands on it. After RA2 and Emperor battle for dune the game went down hill until now where you can say the CnC series is dead.

  • The Command & Conquer series kicks the shit outta everything on this list in my opinion. IN MY OPINION.

  • CnC Series: Check

    Warcraft Series: Check

    Age of Empire Series: Check

    Dune2: Check

    Starcraft: Check

    Best list so far.

  • @Kniazz I"m gonna be pissed if it wasn't have CnC :P

  • Rome total war. Hands down the best RTS game ever, and not even in your top 10?

  • @Aazerel, did you read the video description? =)

  • @ZhangtheGreat No i was at work. i only spend time watching vids, not reading, my boss could come in at any time.

  • @Aazerel, well, I would recommend reading the video description before watching videos regardless of where you are. Many times, it answers a ton of questions you may have. Besides, 99% of the time, those descriptions aren't even long.

  • @Aazerel

I LOVE RTS games. As a fan for the last 20yrs of genre I agree that Rome should have been in there. And SC and War Craft are two of my all time favorites, but they are the same game (ish, I will grant 3 did get different). But I would like to recommend to any true RTS fan a line of games from Pandora. Hearts of Iron ( I like the second incarnation and its expansions best)

  • @grandpuma1701, did you also not read the video description regarding Total War games? =)

  • @Aazerel

Also for anyone over 30, there used to be a game for Sega Genesis called Tyrants. It is the earliest RTS I can remember. Thats what got me hooked 20 years ago.

  • @grandpuma1701 If you got hooked to RTS so long ago, how come you never got addicted to Total Annihilation? Was it too hard for you? It would have naturally lead you to Supcom FA, which is currently the greatest RTS.

  • @praisegugleourmaster

That came out the year I started College. Between class and drinking, there was not to much time for new games. I did play a lot of Star Craft at that time. But for WW2 RTS simulation, try Hearts of Iron. Then around 2000, I think, my friends and I got into a fun shooter, AVP 2.

  • Wacraft 3 Roc & TFT FTW!

  • man i love you you like every game i like and prove the best in rts games

  • Look at R.U.S.E.

    Best game ever

  • @MrFredde1997 Ruse is a 2010 game, the video was made 2008. He clearly said in the video that not everybody will be 100% happy.

  • @MrFredde1997, a game from 2010 cannot be the "best game ever" until it withstands the test of time. Any game can be great at release, but can it stay great for 3, 5, 7, or even 9 years?

  • Oh-yea WARCRAFT 3 the BEST #1. Greatest RTS game I lovet I can never hate this game.

  • Texts close video's gameplay :(

  • dude once i saw you put empire earth i agreed lol.

  • I would have to agree that dune should be higher at least higher than red alert, because thats how i was introduced to RTS games, dune: the battle for arrakis on sega genisis. and i think im right when i say that westwood studios contiued thier success with the command and conqure series do to their best game of all time Dune!!! but all together good video

  • Dune 2 number 7?? It birthed RTS. Show some respect!!

  • @UNSUNGBAND, I put it in the top ten. What more respect do you want? Many people who make RTS lists don't even have it in the top 50 because of its outdated visuals.

  • @ZhangtheGreat Yeah people don't respect quality game play. They just want graphics. That's why the majority of games suck ass today.

  • Warcraft - HARD

    Starcraft - HARD

    AOE 2 - NORMAL

    Others - EASY

    xD

  • @pennyfish89 add to that

Supcom FA - beyond most humans

  • take a look at Medieval Empires - real time strategy for android

  • DOW FTW

  • all these games look crap accept from #9

  • @stevepugh100, right, because looks mean everything =)

  • Company of Heroes! :D

  • He didn't obey this own rules both StarCraft and WoW:RoC are made by Blizzard

  • @Ghost1Fire2, *sigh* How many times do I have to explain this? "Franchise" in video game language does NOT mean company or developer. A video game franchise is a series of games that share a name and/or story. Blizzard has THREE main franchises: Warcraft, Starcraft, and Diablo. Nintendo has too many franchises to count: Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Pokemon, etc.

The moral of the story remains the same: learn your definitions BEFORE rushing to bash someone.

  • @ZhangtheGreat do you have any suggestions of an rts game thats a free download?

  • Starcraft - Broodwar number 1...

  • @underakillingmoon, expansions disqualified. Read the rules.

  • @ZhangtheGreat ok so Starcraft 1...

  • @BigRedShinyButt0n, well it's one game per franchise, and since SupCom is considered TA's "spiritual successor," they were counted as part of the same franchise.

  • I heard the music and I was like "Warcraft 2". xD Now there's some sound I haven't heard in years.

  • you seriously got to b kidding me ! you didn't include rise of nations ! O_O

  • @DrDeathsam, not your list =)

  • @ZhangtheGreat Stronghold?

  • @mugenrider754, cut.

  • The best strategy games are: Red Alert 2 ; RA2 Yuri's Revenge ; Starcraft ; KKND 2 ; Stronghold ; Age Of Mythology ; Age Of Empires 2 ; Age Of Empires ; Tiberian Sun ; Tiberium Wars ; Red Alert 3 ; Stronghold Crusader ; Stronghold Crusader Extreme ; and finally a secret game that i fuckin dont know the name AND I LOVE IT its like stronghold + age of empires and the starting letter is K can anyone say the name of this game ?? PLZ i need it

  • @TommyDDoom oh and Total Annihilation

  • Well, Homeworld is bordering Real-Time-Tactics, and I'm surprised AoE's series made it on the list (not many people I know say it's good but I'm still faithful), but overall, I'm glad to see someone who remembers the DoW, Warcraft, Starcraft, and AoE series'. Just one thing to note about the AoE series is that the new online game is actually pretty fun when you get past the graphics.

  • OMFG LOL i remember empire earth! the fucking awesome game, i have cd with this game! :O

  • Damn you *Time to install dune again* xP

  • I love this warcraft music

  • HEY why dont you use voice ?

  • hehe i was waiting for when total annihalation was going to come along :D

  • I am very surprised that no Total War games were there. :o But great list still.

  • @Visionized, please read the video description. It shouldn't have been a surprise if you did.

  • People, stop arguing on what's this guys favorite games should be... Make your own video, and it's done.

  • OW MAH GAWD NO CALL OF DUTY MODERN WARFRAE>?? kiddin

  • @gongal, inorite? How dare I ignore CoD! =P

  • @gongal his talkin about strategy not fps didn't u read wat he said at the beginning don't be a jerk

  • @RECKOGNING1, don't worry. I know he's just joking around. I even replied to him =)

  • @ZhangtheGreat ha ha XD sorry lol

  • @RECKOGNING1 Wow, really?? You're a fucking genius...

  • @gongal haha yeah i'm sorry i figured u were muckin around after i talked 2 zhangtheGreat :)

  • Daamn it, now i'm curious for the reason why Starcraft is on place 3, not 1 :D

Anyway, Age of empires 2 is awesome, game of my childhood, so i can see that being number one and starcraft being two, but really? warcraft 3? I don't know, i always have found that game to be, kind of strange ^^, too much innovation for me i guess

  • Daamn it, now i'm curious for the reason why Starcraft is on place 3, not 1 :D

  • @ZhangtheGreat Seems a little confusing that Gamespot would state HZ as the ice breaker. Iup, I think, put HZ as 1 of the 50 most important games mabe. But when reading about Dune II, I ran into 3 others: Stonkers, The Ancient Art of War & Command HQ. Never heard of those 3. But yeah, Dune II finally succeded in reaching mainstream.

  • Herzog Zwei, the father of RTS. Never had Dune 2, but was lucky I got HZ 20 years ago on the Sega Genesis. Apparently it has been agreed by most, HZ is indeed the RTS founder; the very 1st game of its kind. Previous games lacked all the RTS elements. A spiritual successor to HZ, called AirMech, is currently in the works.

  • @ImperialGenKlenner, as cool as HZ was, it has not been "agreed by most" as the RTS founder. The first known proto-RTS was Utopia back in 1981. HZ built off that, but Dune 2 was the game that finally connected all the dots and established the RTS format we now love.

  • nice list dude!

now... what do you think about dark reign? i think is quite different from the rest.

maybe a bigger difference than C&C and Dune2

  • nice vid, mate!

  • once number 7 came along, like 1 second it came in

    "Dune 2"

    :D

  • homeworld won a place in my gamer heart XD

  • crappy list no one needs

  • @L0ki1983, troll =)

  • great list, until you placed warcraft 3, Warcraft 2 was much much better than warcraft 3

  • I agree that Warcraft 2 was better because of the top-down view, and the strategys you could do with the squares, like trapping a hero, setting up defenses, and that you could get space better from cutting down trees.

  • Wrong wrong wrong Dawn of war saga should be much higher plus were is company of hero saga, best ww2 rts, can't ur PC cope with graphics!!

  • @ConnorS5645, *sigh* What is it about some people? Let me make it clear for you...

    1) You didn't make this list. Someone else did.

    2) Because of that, expecting it to look like a list you'd make is insane.

    3) If you expect every other person to think exactly like you, maybe it's time to go back to elementary school and re-learn the definition of "diversity."

    Questions?

  • @ZhangtheGreat im not trying to sound mean but try games Like Supreme Comander 1&2 and World in Conflict they are amazing rts games

  • @nukliergeneral, and these aren't? =)

I had about fifty amazing RTS games to choose from. For anyone (not just you) who is wondering why (insert any amazing game's title here) was not chosen, there's your answer: try narrowing down a fifty-game list to only ten and tell me if you can avoid cutting amazing games.

  • STRONGHOLD CRUSADER

  • I've actually missed KKND or KKND 2: Krossfire. These are my favourite RTS games.
