  • nun komme aus münchen

  • gotta love those wonderful german women. and with glasses too.

  • are there 1976 womens relays out there? and 1980 4x400

  • I know perfectly well Heide speaks good English; I've seen it myself. For all I know she speaks it everyday at home. But her own commentary on this race strikes me as important, so I've tried to obtain a translation. I think it's pretty close.

    Starter: On your marks!

Announcer: This race has become a supreme highlight, totally unforgettable in the history of these games.

  • Heide: Well, the relay is always exciting, more exciting than the other events, because a lot of things can happen: you can drop the baton, you can run out of your lane, you can go beyond the passing zone -- and so be quickly disqualified. [gun goes off]

H: And so everyone’s trying to do their best, because you’re competing together with three others and afterwards you don’t want it said you were the one who failed.

  • H: The -- Christiane, well, as we know, stepped in here. The pass to Ingrid was good. Ingrid ran a great leg – A: Fabulous, simply fabulous. H: And Annegret, at that time very young, would later -- four years later won the Olympic championship in the 100 meters in Montreal. And -- A: Here it comes… H: Here it comes. [Heide takes baton] A: …the great anchor leg: Heide Rosendahl… H: Yes. A: …against Renate Stecher.
  • H: Right. I knew, of course, that Renate was the best sprinter in the world; she had won the 100 and 200 meters. [West Germany wins] And I knew how fast I could run, and what kind of lead I could hold against those behind me, and it was just enough. [celebrates with Christiane Krause] Oh, yeah. [laughs].

A: What a moment that was.

H: It was a world record back then, so performance-wise it was a fast relay.

  • [anchor from another angle]

H: I have never seen it from this perspective. I was constantly trying to hear whether she was gaining or not, but it was so loud in the stadium I couldn’t hear a thing. In the old days, on a dirt track, you could hear the steps, but on the Tartan track it was inaudible.

    [replay of final meters]

H: I just knew, when she hadn’t come up to me by 80 meters, I told myself, “Okay, it’s over now, you don’t stand a chance from here on; now we’re winning this thing

  • What a magnificent run by Heidi.. it looks as though the GDR got the baton, a strach before the GFR at the final exchange and Stecher was unable to close her down !

  • Hi from Ireland, does anybody know where I could get or see a video of the 1972 Olympic Show Jumping (Equestrian Horse Jumping) Final in Munich ?

  • Great footage! What a fantastic job by Heide Rosendahl of holding off Renate Stecher, and a great treat for the West German crowd to see a victory over the GDR.

  • I got sent this documentary from a German friend in 1997, it comes from a 25th anniversary documentary which shows all the track finals and all the field events medal winners. Absolutely fantastic viewing i have watched plenty of times since. Munich was the first games i remember properly and they will always have a special memory for me.

  • Do u have the name of the documentary would love to see it or buy it ! Could u pls let me know I would really appreciate it.

  • Hi

I just have the copy of the full documentary, as far as i know it has never been sold. Do you want a copy of what i have [over 2 hours of German footage of the 72 Olympics track and field? i will help you out if that is what you want?

  • Wow I have read about Heide Rosenhahls amazing finish in the final leg where she was the underdog. Everybody thought Stecher was going to catch her but she hold on! Thank you for the video!!

  • This is wonderfull to see, just a rare find on youtube, thank you for posting this. What a great run on the anchor leg by Heide Rosenhahl, and even more wonderfull to her commentary years later; just fantastic !

  • This is absolutely fantastic.. thanks so much for posting this... if you have the women's sprints anything even heats please post...Thank you again olympia72de. Annegret is so cute here !

  • Staffellauf is immer was spannendes ^^

  • Does anybody know who the German lady is who is speaking on this? The commentary seems to have been created much later, as there is a reference to Annegret Richter winning in Montreal.

  • Heide Rosendahl is speaking, her commentary was recorded in 1997.

  • @Finarphin I think she is the ancor leg on the West German team^^. Everybody believed DDR with Stecher would winn this. Underdog Rosendahl proved them wrong. She won gold as a decathlehe I believe.

  • @Snauzer67 Tak so mycket. Yes, everyone believed the DDR would win. I believed it, anyway.

Heide was second in the pentathlon (1st in 71 Euro Ch).

  • @Finarphin but I think first in longjump? There is a famous picture of Heidi - with glasses lol, landing in the sandgrave.
