But if you feel that this family deserves to be born into such an institution of power rather than by way of work and merit like the rest of modern society, then so be it. @Mulholland107 look at all the other former european empires who all wish they had never got rid of their monarchy; spain, germany, portugal etc etc. it is one of the oldest institutions in the world and makes us unique. having a monarchy makes us stronger, even if politicians went mad and sent the country to complete ruin we still have a back up in the royal family, they will always be there for the good of the country and their subjects instead of having a hidden agenda like all politicians.

Spain still has one, but yes, Franco wasn'ta good alternative. I don't Spain likes being centralized in any way. Parliament could pass whatever bill it pleased and the Queen would be bound by convention to assent to it. When one looks at the systematic stripping away of our civil liberties by successive governments, I can't recall having a queen on a throne as making a blind bit of difference. After all, British governments are ministers of the Crown.

I know, here in Sweden it's the same. Some years ago there was a case where a man who killed his own 4 year old daughter got sentenced to 4 years in prison. And to make it even worse, at the same day in the same court, another man got 14 years, for selling some pot! Really makes clear the priorities of the makers of the laws.

The British system (as well as many western European countries) really need to reevaluated their judicial systems. As usual, the US system gets criticized for being too harsh, but then we see murderers being given 5 years, and it makes you really wonder. Come on people!!!!

I am puzzled thats Kay's new wife wasn't prosecuted. It is obvious by the tape that she had both knowledge of Rhonda's murder AND was party to knowledge of her body's whereabouts. (This, in the eyes of the Law make her an accessory to murder) It is an absolute disgrace that she wasn't brought to account. Moreover the 'manslaughter' verdict handed down to Kay was a disgusting mockery of justice. The lying, slimy, smug bastard should be serving a life sentence.

But if you feel that this family deserves to be born into such an institution of power rather than by way of work and merit like the rest of modern society, then so be it. I do like your country and its culture and tradition of freedom, but having a monarchy seems rather archaic in today's world. I like the greatness of the monarchy in history, but now, idealogically, it's hard to justify for me.

@Mulholland107 look at all the other former european empires who all wish they had never got rid of their monarchy; spain, germany, portugal etc etc. it is one of the oldest institutions in the world and makes us unique. having a monarchy makes us stronger, even if politicians went mad and sent the country to complete ruin we still have a back up in the royal family, they will always be there for the good of the country and their subjects instead of having a hidden agenda like all politicians.

@racewalkingrules I agree it does give an odd stability, like a checks and balances system. I think however that Germany and portugal are just fine now without a monarchy. Spain still has one, but yes, Franco wasn'ta good alternative. I don't Spain likes being centralized in any way. I'd have to say Great Britain would be unique without a monarchy with its history and culture. Don't hate on Americans, though. We're not all the same and we have our problems, but we're learning.

And whether that history still is part of the present state matters not. My point regarding the checks and balances is: the queen can dissolve parliament if the pm steps way over the line (as an example, if lord halifax had been pm and surrendered to the germans-bad example,but..) but if the queen oversteps into politics, the people would check her power, parliament could call for her to abdicate, whatever. It's all very theoretical and never will happen, I was just trying to find...

Parliament could pass whatever bill it pleased and the Queen would be bound by convention to assent to it. When one looks at the systematic stripping away of our civil liberties by successive governments, I can't recall having a queen on a throne as making a blind bit of difference. After all, British governments are ministers of the Crown.

Either very intelligent people or very ignorant people with few in between those two extremes. I suscribe to the theory that every country has it's own number of mind numbing stupid people, so the US with a population of over 300 million would have more than the UK for example and of course they tend to get more attention.

nick kay was jailed for only 6 yrs for killing his wife. they didn't find rhondo's body, but he basically admitted killing her on tape, why then did they give him such a piss poor sentence, and his other wife should have been charged as well, as its obvious she knew he had disposed of rhondo's body. the british justice system is a joke.
