  • she used her voice as an instrument...not just singing it...she felt it, and went with it...

  • Ella Fitzgerald did it best, simple and sweet. I love Jazmine, but ellas ability to riff and run is unmatched. Point is Ella could have did this and some, but wanted the lyrics to be heard. This version gets me lost, makes me think ok Jazmine get on with it. Jazmine is an amazing talent in her style of singing. This just is not the song for all of that. Amy did it great too, made it her own, and brought that Jazz. So if comparing Amy and Jazmine. Amy was Jazz, this is let me show you how to run.

  • I personally am a fan of the Sara Vaughan version and I LOVE Jazmine's version. So what if she "over sings" the song? What exactly is over singing anyway?? I felt emotion in the runs she did just as much as the emotion in the more simple original. Just take it for what it is. I love when ppl reinvent a song and make it their own, I hate when ppl cover a song and it sounds just like the original.

  • Love this

  • I don't think this is a very good interpretation of this song. It kind of misses the point.

  • @jonnierekkisvalur she over sings a song that is meant to be simple. I didn't feel anything listening to this

  • @mdsmith2000 My sentiments exactly.

  • @mdsmith2000 it's not even about "meant to be simple", it's about the point of the song, TOTALLY missed in this case. This may be an outstanding performance, although I'd rather call it show-offy, but she totally missed the emotion and the sole point of this song o.O

She would do better covering someone like Beyonce (who is also great, don't get me wrong, but a-world-apart sensibility)

  • Yea I never heard too much of Amy Winehouse's music but I just listened to her version of this song and I'd give this one the JS! Everyone's entitled to their own opinion and in my opinion, Jazmine showed WAY better vocal ability than AW did for this song

  • @missezsosweet08 vocal ability yes, but she ruined the core of the song by oversinging it. listen to Sara Vaughan's version (1963) - it's also a kind of show-off performance, but with bull's eye emotion!

  • @SavaEQZY I'll listen to it...idk I didn't think she overdid it but you might be more of a jazz listener than me

  • love this

  • i can sing yall jus like her

imma put sum videos up soon check me out

  • smh!!!!

  • Anyone trying to make a disparaging remark about Jazmine Sullivan is borderline intellectual functioning. Amy Winehouse did not have the vocal vocabulary, raw talent, control, timbre, melismas, runs, nor riffs that Jazmine has. Were Amy still living and you placed them side by side on a stage, she would be standing in awe of Jazmine's ability.

  • @tristonfordummies lmboooo! Very well stated! Smh These people have no idea.

  • @tristonfordummies Wow.. really? While Jazmine's version is solid, I don't think riffing and running in your best Kim Burrell voice should be considered genius. You apparently don't know anything about Amy's vocal ability.. Just listen to her sing "Teach Me Tonight" or "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow". Jazmine only wishes

  • @tristonfordummies Believe it or not amy had a raw voice too riff and run but to sale records it was not allowed for her as many other singers, which is why Jazmine is not as successful as amy was because she sticks to her style and not what sales. Beyonce could tear this song to pieces riffing and running, but she knows better. Ella fitzgerald, queen of scat, ear unheard of, would have put this to shame. but she did her version simple and sweet.Every song does not have to be over sung like this

  • goodness. what a difference the quality of a voice makes! I just listened to a rendition by a singer named Dianne Schuur and it just wasn't giving me the texture that I wanted. Now listening to this version, I'm content :)

  • She's amazing!

  • Amy Winehouse is a good artist..... But there is a difference between good and great!!!!! Jazzmine Sullivan is an exceptional artist.... She has mastered a gift that God has given her.. Even as a child she sang as if she was in a room full of experts...So im not taking away from Amy but simply giving Jazz what the world is denying of her....

  • you aint got nothing on amy winehouse i like your voice but amy did it much better you did the good "memories always start" part but you aint got A DAMN THANG ON amy winehouse and i know you dnt say you do but i'm just sayingt your a good singer and all but just work on your scatting love :)

  • jazmine's version is better on this song she shows a better range and her scatting is better then you give her credit for

  • Comment removed

  • Truth is neither can scat. Jaz has gospel riffs on this. There is nothing new about this track, her voice or her style in Jazz. Though in R&B nobody can take anything from her. She can sing... nobody argues that. Though for the moment we should leave the extra "Z" out of Jaz's name :)

  • @nanochyron lol. You are a deaf fool if you believe what u posted to be true. GTFOH!!!

  • Damn, Jazzy U doin TOO much with all them Riffs and Runs. What are you trying to prove?

  • She doesnt have to try to prove anything!

  • She singing like she does.

  • the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I personally don't think that should be an issue!!!!!!

  • i think some have got it twisted! no one is cursing her voice or her abilities. she is a great singer. the issue is whether her voice and version of this jazz standard sounds good from a jazzy perspective

  • The bottom line and the reality is that Jazmine Sullivan is BAD!!!!! As all hell (in a good way). She has a vocal ability out of this world, and she sings with a great deal of skills, that not to many singers do nowadays. So for anybody to listen to her voice say that she sounds bad or cannot sing. When u can clearly plane as day here her voice is BEAUTIFUL!!!! U are an idiot and know nothing about music or vocals.

  • Why are all her hot tracks "unreleased"? Damn.

  • I love her with this sound. It's something about her voice that makes you feel at ease.

  • She sounds like Kim Burell... every line was right out of her bag... damn! I would love to hear Kim sing this. Jazmine steals the riffs well, but Kim just has the ears to bend her style to really create a new thing. My guess is Kim would tear this up and make it unrecognizable... do it her way. PS... Ella was great then for then... if you really know Jazz check out Cassandra Wilson's version. Truth is if Ella was still alive she wouldn't sing it that way anymore either. SANKOFA PEOPLE!

  • Jazmine does sound a lot like Kim Burrell but she didn't steal any riffs..while it's evident Kim is a major influence..jazmine is skillful in her own right and is very capable of using her own ear..listen to the other version of this..it sounds nothin like this

  • she has made this standard some sort of R n B track. listen to ella please and like 'Jazz riff' said explore the roots and various other artists before we get carried away with jazmine's voice

  • OMG shut the FUCK up! u internet people who think they know everything get on my NERVES!! Relkrhelk 1st u dnt know what ur talkin about, no one that truely knows her is carried away with her voice.. Jazz is a huge part of her background which u would hear by the majority of her underground work. Fearless just does not happen to represent that side of her completely. Also this would NOT be considered RnB and she has payed homage to ella, billie, vaughn and all the other jazz greats.

  • She sounds like Kim Burrell singing jazz. Phenomenal.

  • I thought it was great....I see a lot of criticism....No it was not Thelonius Monk's version, however I think it was a great contemporary remake of a jazz classic that focused on the vocalist, and I really enjoyed it.....any real jazz head knows that jazz allows u to interpret a song with a great deal of spontaneity and emotion, which she did....scatting, phenomonal, something really different......keep it up Jazmine, congrats on ur movie.

  • Jazmine sullivan does thelonius monk...didn't see that coming...shes nice tho. I personally like the ella version best.

  • Love that she did a Sarah Vaughn song and her voice is amazing, I'm glad she branching out to new terriorities, silly people always want you to stay in ya lane, I say be bold and take risks, she got the talent to do that

  • Jazmine sullivan will murder amy winehouse...yeah she is more a jazz singer but with jazz or not jazmines vocals are sick compared 2 amy winehouse..

  • The singer is showcasing herself, not the song. That's a shame, because the song is amazingly composed (Monk=genius) and this now sounds typical.

This feels like a female dancer trying to lead her partner. She's manhandling him! When you have a world class lead, let the man show YOU off! That doesn't mean she shouldn't improvise, but the greats knew how to let the song take them there instead of forcing their will upon it.

  • Love Jazmine, but that's not scatting. That's running.

  • I have to disagree. She ran all over the place in this song but when she decided to scatt that's precisely what she did. I think someone of her talent knows the difference.

  • She did scat, but she didn't do it over the melody of the song. She did it over a repetitive section that is not part of the original composition making it much easier.

This song is hard. The changes and intervals are not conventional, and that makes it hard not to get lost when improvising.

This version shows that the singer has a unique voice, pitch and talent, but I think the arrangement reduces the song itself to a common sounding tune. The magic has been removed.

  • I hear what you are saying and I do agree.

  • Talen is not really the issue. Like I said, I'm a big fan, but a jazz singer she is not.

  • she scatted but you might have been thrown off by some of her double concentrates (combination of riffs/runs and scats)

  • Talent, sorry. Jazmin can sing almost anything. She's an amazing talent. I happen to be a big jazz fan, and I appreciate authenticity. Saying she does not possess the skills necessary to properly interperet jazz does not undermine her talent, it just means I feel she was a bit out of her league here. No insult intended.

  • I'll have to give it to you. Technically, she was singing wordless vocals, so yes, she was scatting. Just not authentically in my opinion.

  • Jazmine has a wonderful voice, but the songs on her album did not flatter this wonderful soulful voice. I guess they wanted her to appeal to a younger audience, but she is neo-soul and jazz by nature. Please find another record label Jazmine.

  • She sounds like Kim Burrell.

  • not really

  • She reeeeeally does!!

  • Exactly...the first time I heard jasmine about 4 years ago..I was in shock...Im like, this has got to be kim burrell...Love them both!

  • @alum Yes lawd!!

  • @alum I have always said that

  • @alum umm no

...there is some comparison but she has her originality

  • She is a soul singer so this is her interpretation as Ella did her own. 2 different era's and styles. Just appreciate, if you dont like things it is just a click away! lol

  • I love this song. I wish she did this on her album. Her riffs are so on point

  • Man!! its crazy how its always someone judging every little thing somebody else does. Anyway she did her thang in this song and it can show for it too.

  • I LOVE HER SOOO MUCH.!

  • I applaud the attempt...I really, REALLY do. Truth be told, it sucks! She needs to check out the great vocalist of the last century and use that as a spring board for her own arrangement. There's a lot to be learned from the likes of Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, etc. The scatting was deplorable! I'm not an R&B hater either. I really wanted this to sound good and be of sound, musical taste. It wasn't though, by any stretch of the imagination.

  • lol. i wasnt really supposed to comment on u bt i accidentally clickd on d good comment icon...lol. anyhow, i beg to differ from ur opinion. ppol wid dis kind of voice are indeed rare; notice her improvisation skills, it's just jaw-dropping. if u insist ur opinion, then i beg dat u make a cover of round midnight and let's see how good u can scat... or even sing at that. Gday

  • First of all, I never said that I could sing. My opinion is merely that...just my opinion. However, I have performed or recorded with some of the worlds greatest vocalist for the last 20 years, which gives a little credence to my opinion. With that said, I take back what I said about it sucking. It doesn't suck. It does lack taste though. Taste is something that comes with a certain level of experience and understanding the "true" nature of a composition.

  • i don't think it sucked. but i do think that she could do less runs and work on the actual quality of the song. and i agree that after listening to greats like Ella the scatting does fall short. i'm not saying it's easy but, the true jazz greats were masters of their crafts and they didn't have to do a lot of runs, just amazing vocal control and tone

  • You're absolutely correct! Our great vocalist exhibited great control of tone AND phrasing! What is lacking in todays vocalist, some, not all, is mastery of phrasing. There are a lot of singers with good voices but the ones we remember are the ones that no how to manipulate a line.

  • I doubt anyone will be able to scat like Ella, I mean, she's Ella, but Jazmine does a great job here. Besides that, she was merely in her teens at the time of this recording. She's still perfecting her craft. Imagine how great she will be in a few years.

  • I don't think i was suggesting that she should scat like Ella. I simply mean that by "checking out" greats such as Ella, Sarah Vaughan, etc. she would expedite her vocal growth, not just from a technical aspect but from a "nuance" perspective as well. Studying the masters teach us how to have good taste musically. Also, if she was only in her teens, maybe the amount of emotion needed to perform such a song as this was absent from her soul.

  • I would have to agree. I can fully understand appreciate the aforementioned comments. However, this girl is not only very young but she is also singing a completely different genre. This is her take on the song and is merely experimentation. I thank God that she actually knows this song unlike the rest of my generation who have no idea who Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, or Sarah Vaughan are. I think this song was....interesting. I think she just needs to learn to edit herself a little more.

  • Furthermore, the people in my generation aren't really taught music. They are merely taught to sing by rote. They have absolutely no idea about phrasing or control because they are taught to sing 'loud' and to 'belt' there. And as you have a pretty voice you are considered a 'good singer'. These people are sadly not taught to be musicians. However, I do like Jazmine Sullivan's voice, she has a raw talent that is rarely seen in music today. Congrats Jazmine this is a beautiful song. Best wishes!

  • Whoa, harsh! For a non jazz singer, this is really good, and she tries ot add her own flavor to the song. You are definitely over analyzing her voice and arrangement of the song that was altered to fit her voice. Jazz music is emotions of the soul, and that is what she displayed. It may not have been perfect, but it is better than what most folks would have accomplished

  • Ok, OK, alright already! Let me clear some things up here! I agree with all of the people who posted and said that they really like her voice and the FACT that she actually made the attempt to perform this song. I DO applaud her genuine effort and I actually can appreciate her voice as well. However, I agree wholeheartedly with Koriannae. Most young, pop singers are convinced that what they do and how they do it is GREAT! This is rarely the case...

  • CONT...It's this mentality that has diluted so much of our artistic endavors, as well as sports and academia. OK, simply put--for all of you that LOVE this recording, I implore you to check out our heritage of great American vocalists, i.e., Paul Robeson, Leontyne Price, Kathleen Battle, LOUIS ARMSTRONG, Johnny Hartman, Ella, Sarah, Billie, Frank Sinatra, etc. Doing so will not make you dislike Jazmyne but make you appreciate the tradition more and add weight and validity to your opinion.

  • sorry about the misspelled word (endeavors)...early in the morning, coffee hasn't kicked in yet!

  • Love this so much. listen to it to much.

  • this song gives me goosebumps wooooow!!!!!

  • this is like a roundmidnight waterfall of SOULLLLL!!!!!!

  • luv dis song

  • i love this!

  • it'sz ite i mean her sng This Is love touchesz meh tho.....im a fan ma keep du'n yah thang....

  • Sorry, I like Jazmine's version best. Her vocalizing is what makes the song touch your soul. It makes you FEEL it. Thelonious Monk's version is nice too.

  • She sounds ok but Thelonious Monk's version is the best followed second by Amy Winehouse's cover of it. Too much vocalizing in Jazmines cover

  • It's jazz. How is it there too much vacalizing? Jazz is majorily based on forms of improv. I love Amy Winehouse but her version is a bit too square, If you were in a jazz lounge/bar, which version would get the better applause. Jazmine or Amy?

  • True. True. But it seems more like show off-ie. Like "look what I can do with my voice". lol. I think she has one of those voices that just sounds better simple. all the extra vocalizing and notes distract you frm the simple beauty of her voice.

  • Sorry, I know this is really old! :)

Do you really want to know who would get the better applause in a jazz lounge - Jazmine or Amy? Answer: Jazmine isn't a jazz singer, so she wouldn't be there in the first place. If this version was heard in an after hours jazz club, she would be considered a naive girl who doesn't really know what jazz is about. They would give her a polite applause and quickly push her off the stage. The old timers might take her aside and advise her.

  • @cocomaire girl you need to stop and research some of her back ground... She isnt some hard time chick that lived a hard life from doing drugs and such to have something to sing about..... Jazmine is honestly rooted and grounded by jazz, r&b, or whatever genre you chooose to put her in.....The girl is the truth... This girl was scatting when she was a teenager...Some people hate the fact that other people can do things that they can"t....
