  • I can not think of anything less supported by the research, or more questionable as a clinical practice, then using hypnosis to recover memories.

Individuals under hypnosis are prone suggestion and the subject to the demand characteristics of the therapeutic relationship. Recovered memories are a fiction which has caused more suffering than any theory since "witches don't float."

Time to put the crystals and love beads away.

  • Phred593,

I strongly disagree. Hypnosis for recovering memories can be extremely accurate and valuable--but you have to follow specific guidelines and procedures.

Regular, non-hypnotic memory can be inaccurate. For instance, you seem to think I said hypnotically recovered memories are inaccurate. I did not. Should we avoid the use of regular memories too?

Within certain parameters, using hypnosis to recover memories can work well. Used poorly, it does not work well and can cause problems.

  • Avoid recovering memories using Hypnosis, it is not trustworthy. Why are you suggesting the practice of hypnosis for recovering memories when in your own words, it is not accurate. You seam to contradict yourself.
