and exactly that's the reason why we have traffic lights in front of our station: when we leave we turn them red, cars stop, we don't have to worry about getting hit, and then we roll out without sirens - smooth, fast and safe.
I have had a car in front of me responding to a call me and two other firefighters in the rig, 1985 fmc kenworth. with federal on front bumper and two air horns on roof, round led lights in grill light bar corner strobes and I was less than a car length away, I could hear that mother f^&*%^$'s radio over my federal and air horns full blast. we wrote down the plate and brought it to the police staton. I don't tollerate that kind of shit. espicaly when its a possible house fire.
Yeah but also people are used to getting out of the way of emergency vehicles coming from behind them, not from ahead. I can see where they'd be caught off guard. Still, we should all try to drive defensively and be ready to STOP even if some doofus honks at us in annoyance. It'll prevent way more accidents.
I was there, I saw it happen. There were plenty of time for the cars to stop when in fact, they sped up to beat the truck. Even if the lights aren't the brightest, the siren is a dead give away something is coming. Boils down to ignorant drivers not paying attention.
actually, the lights were bright, siren started just as the truck started rolling out the door. If you look are the video carefully, it is several seconds of the lights going before the vehicles came through. No excuse to cut the rescue off like that. Obvious fault of the ignorant drivers!
@sparkywfd...I am watching the same video. you can not see the intersection lights at all because they are small strobes and the box lights are barely visible in your video. it doesn't matter how long you used the siren before pulling out because it is going straight out in front of you and will do nothing to warn drivers coming from the side. The light package will do that. light bars are hard to see in the day from the side. your intersection and box lights are the key and sorry...they suck
no kidding they kept going. crappy intersection lights with weak strobes. crappy box lights barely visible in the video. crappy light bar. they are not in front of the truck so they aren't going to hear the siren until it is too late. Besides the light bar I had to look for the red lights. don't blame the drivers, blame the poor design.
