  • IDK if this is the best video ever, but this is the most realistic video on packing I've seen yet, this dude has some serious experience and took all of his advice, thank you so much!

  • Wow, you seem so experienced! do you backpack for your own pleasure or is it work related?

  • Seems like alot of unneccesary items. I could see having maybe one spare light, but spare batteries would be lighter and tighter. Two eating utensils are just adding weight as well. One mesh ditty (for washing clothes) and one watertight would be sufficent. Plates and cups are also adding unneeded weight when you can eat and drink straight from the pot. I also agree with napster745 on the compass situation. Filtration is convenient but not neccesary when you can do the same with your pot/cloth.

  • wow and i thought this video would actually be different uhh ..um..um..uh

  • If one compass is broke, you wouldn't know which was the one that works!!! That's funny. Thanks napster745. Maybe a little more redundancy in this pack than I would do, but I'm not carrying it. I would opt for spare batteries over spare lights.

  • where did you get the match cases and how many litres is your bag xxxx

  • but if one of the compasses was actually broken, you wouldnt know which one is the working one lol

  • What is the size of that pack in liters ?

  • how about getting rid of of all those dumb 9 $ water battles and going back to the plats that you can roll up if you need two or three no prob cuz the roll them up . over pack by all means its up too you. i can go on!

  • @mrduderr and to add i get all my hard side water battles from the gas station for 1.79$ and filled with water

  • @mrduderr not that i buy a new one every hike cuz i dont my last one i had for two summers i lost it

  • you forgot toilet paper

  • What litr is your bag?

  • Wraping the cooking pot with a rope is bright ! thanks for the idea.

  • ...and what not...

  • um um great vid

  • you didnt pack a spar tire

  • Heh you sir have the attitude of an eagle scout. If you are an eagle scout then I look up to you.

  • props for doing that video all one-handed haha

  • What name brand is that big red first aid kit? Where did you get it?

  • In my opinion, you carry a bit much. But you are prepared for everything, which is always the best idea for any hiker. Good vid.

  • @ALABAMAFORCERECON at least you're polite about it. i hate it when you see good videos with comments from know-it-alls who think they're better. do you have a vid like this??

  • @mattbruder505 I do not. but i am am a avid backpacker

  • @ALABAMAFORCERECON ok. i just like to hear people's opinions. id like to see one if you do get it up.

  • does your pack wiegh like 50 pounds.

  • platypi. not platypuses. and also very helpful video thank you.

  • What does your shirt say?

  • Terrific video! great list; wow, I've never seen one of thse mini-saws yet, but I should think about getting one; I have the same Whisperlite, love it, though it does need regular part replacement, their "fix-kit" has most items .. seems that pump cup goes out often ...

    Great video post, thanks!

  • Way too much shit.

  • the video is awesome, Is it really required to have a good quality water bladder? what is the use of having water bottle and water bladder? a light weight water bottle will weigh much lesser than your platypus or campel back pack isnt it?

  • I thought the vid was informative. I didn't agree with everything but I am a "canoe camper" and weight is not important. Campfire talk said it best I guess, "If your comfortable with the weight then pack it!" Good vid don't let the nah sayers deter you.

  • Toot your own horn much? Several legs of the AT, wow. I did the whole thing. There's so much wrong with this vid. You carry way too much crap. 3 flashlights? A whisperlite? Platy bladders are more puncture resistant than a woven fabric bladder. Heavy gear can be more dangerous, contrary to popular belief. Two sporks? really? Titanium is better than stainless. The list goes on...

  • Hey Dan, great video! There's are some negative comments on here but keep posting man! I'm a professional mountain guide and also train and certify professional mountain guides. I HAVE seen all brands of compasses fail many times but I still only carry one. One thing people forget though is you need to be comfortable! So if an extra light and compass make you feel more secure or comfortable then TAKE IT! Your set-up is ok, works for you right? Right on!!! :)

  • you look like you are holding poop in your butt. but nice vid none the less

  • Thank you for this video...I t really helped me a lot!! I learned a lot , uve got great experience and thank you for sharing it!! :)

  • this is not a bad combo. if you think that this is too much stuff then check out nutnfancy's pack at 5000 cu in pack weighing in at almost 75lbs....sometimes more....as he says "be comfortable". I use a 3600 pack and I have slightly more stuff than this. I want to enjoy the outdoors. thanks for showing us your system

  • WOW ppl quit bitchin and watch something else if you don't agree. Personally I agree with most of what he's saying. My motto is be be comfortable out there. If your going to challenge yourself then go ultralight.

  • uhhh... umm...

  • What kind of tent is it you have in this video?

  • what compass do you use wear your a scout or something

  • hi love your video you seem like bear grylls or something

    one qeustion well two?

how much does it cost? and

what dry sacks do you use fir your equipment?

    thanks

  • what the f*** dude... that is way too much stuff, if you would be as experienced as you say you are, you would hike A LOT lighter that this

  • What part of the Tetons. That's near Jackson Hole?

  • hey dan i found some great info in this video and the rock climbing one you have. All that gear you have has to have added up, i'm in high school and still trying to figure out what to do when i get older, so what do you do?

  • Great information! It's amazing that you can fit all that gear into a 3500 CI pack!!

  • Good intro vid for anyone trying to get their first (or 5th) pack together

  • fake.

  • This guy would bore me to death, I bet his "friends" love going hiking with him Sir Edmund Hillary took less stuff with him & he was going to climb Everest. haha.

  • Where did you get those bags at?

  • Good stuff man, I'm learning some good ideas. Thanks for posting

  • Nice video, Iridecustom has a small dick

  • You carry enough gear for a small Boyscout troop! Seriously though carry what you are comfortable with.

  • Great video. But where can I get some whatnots?

  • Nice, Thanks

  • three headlamps but only one extra pair of socks? i don't want to tell you how to live your life or hike your hike, but i would suggest checking your priorities

  • apparently your the Guy that has to be right in all situations. 160+- miles in 10 days over 11,000-13,000 foot peaks is definitely a push. you pack what you want and I'll pack what I want, Shh the beauties of individualism. if you don't want to take the video as the instruction tool it is, make your own video and post it as a response. I'm sure my viewers would love your 2 cents

  • @TheDanMcK Don't let the ass wipes deter you, every bit of your opinions and experiences are appreciated. There is always someone out there who thinks they know it all, and apparently iridecustom is one of them. Experiences and opinions are all different.

Thanks for taking the time and putting this out there!

  • Haha... alright, first of all 10 days is definintely not a push. At least not untill you're averaging 18 miles a day. And everybody should have a compass with them when their in the backcountry, you shouldn't have to worry about supplying others amongst yourself. And if the SAR escalates to the point where a team is called in "They will ALL have compasses". My current occupation is a Mountain Guide and if you've ever participated in a SAR, you'd know it very difficult to get lost.

  • Not every one can be a mountain guide and SAR expert.... Anyways the best rescue teams are made up of Pararescuemen!

  • @iridecustom go take a hike, this man is happy with his setup and that's all that matters. It doesn't matter how long your hiking for as long as your having fun and not putting the lives of you and the people around you at risk then your doing it right. If you don't get anything out of this video who gives a dam, I'm new to the hobby and I learned from what I saw. We all have different ways of doing things!

And my opinion is that regular SAR is for pussies and real men join the USAF Pararescue!

  • great video!!

  • If a SAR operation needs to go down quickly, 2 compasses can come in handy, and setting up orienteering courses is also an excellent way to hone skills while in the wilderness. Show me the "lack of confidence" in this system when using it for a 10 day push. I don't quite understand your angle. And BTW, I have seen Silva compasses go down in the wilderness several times as they too are susceptible to unknown elements, falling into rivers/off a cliff or being broken. shit happens in the woods

  • @TheDanMcK

Yeah I did a hike and was sure my Silva (brand new ) was wrong, and of course it was me not the compass that was wrong. . A back up compass is a really good idea it puts you mind at rest when you think man this is not the right direction. It's like instrument flying in a plane, trust ya instruments not ya feelings.

  • @iridecustom

Bit harsh, you have never lost anything, not had a grizzly tear your camp apart for fun? Oh wait the UK has no bears to speak of only rabbits and rats.

If your not afraid of getting lost your the one blowing smoke or just camping on a milk run every year. I could hike all over the tiny UK and not need a compass but here we actually have crown land that is not squatted completely by peasants. LOL!

  • @iridecustom it's not really about the compass malfunctioning...it's a mental thing, and it does happen to people. it probably wouldn't happen to this guy because he is experienced, but we all react differently to the sudden onset of panic from realizing we're lost.

  • @iridecustom

Dont mistaken experience as wisdom. Compasses are not unbreakable.

  • Now thats the perfect pack, take note everyone!!!! and learn something.

  • I have never backpacked really but i have this pack that i use to pack out animals when i hunt and i want to know if i could be used for a backpacking trip with any success. Link in next post

  • very good.

  • definitely a lot of stuff but its cool man. gotta have an attitude to be prepared for anything. what kind of stuff do you eat on your trips?

  • Yup WAYYYYY too much of the unnecessary stuff. 3 Lights?...no., You've got "cases" for everything too... just adding weight,,,, Canteens?... too heavy. Use a plastic water bottle, they're lighter than all that metal.... pack must be 60 pounds.

  • Thank you so much for great info.

  • love this vid great stuff!!!!! 2 is 1 and 1 is none great job keep em coming!!!!!!

  • what program do you use for your filming?

  • I like to backpack off the trail and away from everyone. So I carry a lot of gear and set up a base camp. My pack can get really heavy but I can handle it. If I were trying to cover distance and there were shelters and supply points, like on the AT, then I would go Ultralight. I think a lot of the critics here don't understand that philosophy. Oh well. Great job.

  • said umm an aweful lot lol. great info tho

  • Man, you carry way to much stuff. I believe your hikes will be much more pleasurable if you have a lighter pack. A lot of unneeded things.

  • As I stated in the vid, this is my integral amount of equipment. When I'm out for a week at a time, I typically use everything in my pack. I am comfortable carrying the weight. When that moment comes and you say "damn I wish i brought that along" ; I brought it, used it and enjoyed it. If you'ld like i could do a vid on my Lightweight system weighing 26 lbs

  • Yes! Could you please. I mean I definitely give you credit by far for what you have accomplished when backpacking. But, yes could you do a video for less weight. That would be much appreciated. Thanks!

  • @TheDanMcK i would. im a member of the BSA, first class, and was wondering if u could

  • @trev4ev2 (post a vid on the lightweight system)

  • @TheDanMcK Could you please do that? I need some recommendations about what to carry in a lightweight pack

  • @WilliamBro

Only hippies commit suicide by nature going out in ultra light fashion victim gear they paid way too much for. The majority if not all the rescues in BC and the Rockies is tourists that sound like you or locals with little to no kit and less real world practice short of the fake TV shows with crews and limitations on what they can teach you. Les Stroud is the only real instructor on TV and you need lots of gear.

  • @WilliamBro Word. But still... it`s TheDanMcK`s back afterall ;) If he need it then let him carry it..

  • @WilliamBro

Hes prob just stronger than you Will. May come in handy some day.

  • You have high quality kwipment. I like that. Some people buy cheap crap and try to tell you that they know everything about camping and I always laugh. every dollar I spend on good stuff pays me back 10 times over. Keep making these videos.

  • Like my grandpa always said, "buy it right the first time to really save money". stay tuned for some new vids soon. thanks for the support

  • @TheDanMcK I got a really cheap alcohol stove that i been using for a long time.. Still using it :)

  • thanks. i am trying to find an average weight for my pack. my first multiple day hike my pack weight was 45 lbs. on my second multiple day hike my pack weight was 24 lbs. i found that i had everything i needed and the hike was much more enjoyable.

  • great stuff. how much does your pack weigh?

  • my average pack weight is 36 lbs give or take a couple lbs. i dont mind a little extra weight for luxury

  • thats what i'm talking about, disregard those that travel lite, when they get to their destination it's gonna suck!.
