Teo Macero produced some fine sessions but I can't help feeling decidedly queasy at his brown-nosing of Monk followed by the gross mistake in not recording the trio and then interrupting them so very rudely. Monk was inflamed and was perfectly entitled to be so. In view of Columbia's miserly financial subtractions from Monk's pay checks I have a measure of contempt for them. Nothing wrong with Monk's music here though - utterly entrancing.
Carmen McRae has a great version of this song on her tribute album "Carmen Sings Monk" or some title close to that. I also like "Ask Me Now" and "Round Midnight"... I like listening to Monk on Sunday mornings for some reason... Recently bought a copy of MONK. which was his 4th recording on Columbia... Lovely, magical music... gracious Sunday morning.
Great Balls of Fire--this video is priceless!! Live, evidently at a recording studio, talking with his producer, wearing a squarish cap someone presented him in Poland (which would have been way behind the iron curtain then). It just stops--OH NO!! is there more? I'd guess this was mid 60's. I saw him then at the Half Note, Birdland, and other Jazz clubs, and in 1963 he appeared with his goatee braided. Where did this marvelous piece of history come from?
wow!!! i love this tune so much......and yeah, why is macero not recording that take?! charlie rouse has such beautiful tone

It's crazy, but my favorite part of the whole song is the piano breakdown from 2:24-2:28!. I wsih I could play just that small piece!
