This issue also happens when u push in ur headphones, that also causes the flex cable to disengage, thus pressing puts it in correct place

I had the same problem, i used this technique and it worked, later on, i tool my iphone apart and found the culprit, this usually happens when the flex cable loses its firm attachment, (therefore, when u press the back, it fits into place again and starts working) i disassembled the phone, and firmly pressed the flex back in and it works now . ;)

Thanks to this video for helping me out though, without this i would have never guessed what the problem actually was.

I dont really know what u said cuz i'm at work and my audio doesn't work.. but let me tell you guys that that top button on my 3g is kinda caved in too... so what I do to lock the screen is

1) put the auto lock time to 1 minute

2) instead of pressing directly down on it, slide your finger towards the back, this pushes the button down and towards the front... for some reason it triggers the button... iunno if it will work for everyone but it's worth a try... try the opposite direction as well

This totally worked for me. Not only was my power switch not working but also my silence switch and volume buttons weren't responding. By carefully pressing down on all the areas that correspond to the other keys they all started wiling again. I just hope that this stays working for a while. Thanks so much for posting this video.

Hey guy's you don't need to do this. All you have to do is install a app called quicklock from cydia. If you are on ios4 use quicklock2. this app will place a button on the screen. This will help you out if you have this problem!

its probably loose, I fixed it before and I have no knowledge on electronics.

my problem was one of my iphones ( i have two) the switch had caved in, fixed it using a technique that i modded my PSP -1000..

@ThisLadWayne Taking the iPhone apart to do the job he said does NOT void the warranty, you only void the waranty once you start removing the motherboard. If you somehow balls up getting the screen off (which is an easy job) and it looks obviously opened. Then you have a problem! More often than not the flex cable will simply be loose once the screen is popped off and a cleaning it a bit and popping it back on should fix it.

This didnt work for me, but what i did was remove the sim slot thingy and blew as hard as i could into the slot towards the lock button, i tried a good hard push down on the lock button and it worked.
