nfx, i would like to thank you for those tutorials. so helpful. i have got a question tho, is there way to identify the highest decibel of a sample loop in fl?
Just got linked to this by a friend, and not intending to cause offense, but you need to be more confident in your delivery. It would likely help if you had notes infront of you, or if you already do, then a full scripting. You have a wonderful voice, and it's such a shame to hear it drifting about sentences as if they don't actually exist.
I just watched your video on mastering- decibels and although it was helpful and I learned a lot, I'm still confused.
So I understand in your wave sample explanation using edison that 0.00 is the cut off point but why does the top say 0.00dB 1.00 and the bottom say 0.00dB -1.00?
Like if the centre is -INF dB, what is the difference between the top half and the bottom half?
@AlpineViking91 Hey to answer your question, 0.00db is the limit of the wave forms the computer can read. 0.00db all the way at the bottom of the sound wave and 0.00db all the way at the top. A negative number is always going down like on the "y-axis." The positive numbers are always going up like the "y-axis."
No offense but how can you call this "decibels explained" when you basically just show how to read your software's measurement of a digital time series. I appreciate that you made the connection between amplitude and loudness and from there that increases in dB mean equate to louder sound but you haven't really explained the measurement at all in relation to human ear non linearity or the basic 20*log10(Vrms) to the viewer (even if you were to hand wave it as "crazy math stuff").
I am doing voice work for a company where I am being asked to deliver 8K16Bit files at -12.5dB (i think FS). In Sound Forge (as in your program) it looks like that will be about 25% up from the center line (averaging out the many wave form peaks). Would you say that's correct? - voicetube
I love your videos and you're really helpful but sometimes you'll just trail off for 5 minutes talking about something completely different than what the title says..The video ends up being way longer than needed.
what is great here, is that you understand that other people don't understand this knowledge ,and you understand the way of how to make this able to understand for those people ..
you understand ?
:-)
now i finally understand the db and those numbers ....
dB is a ratio rather than a fixed measurement, meaning it's not a SPL (Sound Preasure Level) measurement per se. You can if you want to zoom in on any waveform between the beats and go on into infinity and set a point of reference and a point of measurement and say that the measurement is X dB louder than the PoR. dBs are also not linear but logarithmic
Just saying because sooner than later you'll run into a lot of contradicting info about dBs because it's a complete science unto itself ; )
My piano teacher had passed away wich made me stop learning about music when i was young. I have looked at all of ur video's today and well.. You gave me that interest in music/audio again like when i was a little kid.
I thank you for it and i really hope you keep doing this. ur a good man and just want to pass on knowledge to others and are succeeding at it. I wish i could do something to let you know the appreciation for doing all this.

The intro dragged on a bit with the largely unrelated stuff you were talking about such as music progression, but I really found the rest of this video highly informative and easy to follow. Thanks a lot for taking the time to provide us with your insight, this was really helpful for me.
(''Master mixer DAVE PENSADO'') - he said - The L1 is my favorite limiter. It’s got a lot of the attributes of an LA-2A, but none of the negatives. I really think that 40 years from now, the L1 will be looked at as a classic, just like the Fairchild compressor is looked at as a classic today. People fawning over software the way they do great analog compressors of today.
All the reviews say that for years industry standard/commercial quality recordings used Waves L1 Plugin and this plugin is more than 15 years old. Wow!!!
The waves L1 compresses the entire track and boosts the levels to the output you select. My settings are, Threshold -2.0 and Out Ceiling -0.3. Mastering engineers suggest putting the Out Cealing down to -0.3 db to stay on the safe side and the signal never clips...
Many people think that using the "normalize" function on their audio software will maximize the volume to its' full potential. All it really does is maximize the biggest peak of a track - if a snare hit in the track is 3 db above everything else, the snare hit will be maximized to the zero level, but everything else will still be 3 db lower. Compression/limiting will even it out, resulting in maximized loudness. I don't bother to normalize my tracks - I leave that to the L1 Ultramaximizer.
The L1 Ultramaximizer is a professional look ahead limiter that can add many decibals to your track without comprimising the sound. I've been able to produced recordings that are just as loud sounding as the major label CDs. For Fl Studio I use the L1 that comes without the IDR, NO IDR, the one with IDR change your sound wen you render your music in FL Studio. Try it, render one track the way you render and look at the mp3 or wav files, then render using the L1 and look at THAT mp3 or wav file.
Hey nfx, love your tutorials! Hey i cant find one on using the compressor to minimise the peaks on my kicks and snares, its really bugging me as i cant louden my tracks that much.. if you have one could you tell me which one.. or if you wouldnt mind could you make one of you tweaking your kick with the comressor? CHEERS BRO.
could you find out what frequency the peak is hitting at, then subtractive EQ that particular frequency to lower that peak, meaning you can then boost the db without the peak clipping? or would that not work?
sorry if that makes no sence, just thought it could be a good idea.
i bought a mxl 2001 mic and a m-audio fast track(USB) i plugedin every thing the first time a recorde was really clean and good but when i restated my pc it make a really noisy you can hear the hard driver from the computer and i tried to fix with the gain but it didnt work so plz help me out
