  • nfx, i would like to thank you for those tutorials. so helpful. i have got a question tho, is there way to identify the highest decibel of a sample loop in fl?

  • Those guy are Awesome i have watched alot of the tutorials and i am gaining experience

  • Thank you. That was very helpful to me.

  • Just got linked to this by a friend, and not intending to cause offense, but you need to be more confident in your delivery. It would likely help if you had notes infront of you, or if you already do, then a full scripting. You have a wonderful voice, and it's such a shame to hear it drifting about sentences as if they don't actually exist.

  • он по англиске говрит я нечо не понимаю

  • I suggest that if you are watching this you skip the first 2 minutes (as it's just an off topic intro) but the rest of the video was very helpful

  • @MattThaArchitect cheers :)

  • Hi Warbeats.

I just watched your video on mastering- decibels and although it was helpful and I learned a lot, I'm still confused.

So I understand in your wave sample explanation using edison that 0.00 is the cut off point but why does the top say 0.00dB 1.00 and the bottom say 0.00dB -1.00?

Like if the centre is -INF dB, what is the difference between the top half and the bottom half?

  • @AlpineViking91 Hey to answer your question, 0.00db is the limit of the wave forms the computer can read. 0.00db all the way at the bottom of the sound wave and 0.00db all the way at the top. A negative number is always going down like on the "y-axis." The positive numbers are always going up like the "y-axis."

  • good tutorials m8

  • No offense but how can you call this "decibels explained" when you basically just show how to read your software's measurement of a digital time series. I appreciate that you made the connection between amplitude and loudness and from there that increases in dB mean equate to louder sound but you haven't really explained the measurement at all in relation to human ear non linearity or the basic 20*log10(Vrms) to the viewer (even if you were to hand wave it as "crazy math stuff").

  • It took you 10min to tell me something I already knew?? Damn..

  • 4:11 ODB is secretly trying to tell us he's alive

  • I am doing voice work for a company where I am being asked to deliver 8K16Bit files at -12.5dB (i think FS). In Sound Forge (as in your program) it looks like that will be about 25% up from the center line (averaging out the many wave form peaks). Would you say that's correct? - voicetube

  • So when my dB meter or monitor showes +2, what is going on? Does that get clipped as well - and the +2 peak is only hypothetic?

  • I love all your videos, I'm learning alot. thanx.

  • I love your videos and you're really helpful but sometimes you'll just trail off for 5 minutes talking about something completely different than what the title says..The video ends up being way longer than needed.

  • Very informative. Too bad you waisted the 1st 2 minutes of it talking about things you were'n't going to talk about.

  • @dvdbtm1012 no kiddin i like these vids but damn i just sat thru that whole intro

  • Listen to my beat by clicking my name below. If you don't like it, dislike this comment. I'm sure you will though ;)

  • what is great here, is that you understand that other people don't understand this knowledge ,and you understand the way of how to make this able to understand for those people ..

    you understand ?

    :-)

now i finally understand the db and those numbers ....

  • Comment removed

  • can you make a tutorial on how to EQ bass so it doesn't overpower all my other sounds?

  • @theurbanmunky You don't, you need to remove the bottom 12hz from your overall mix. Use a low pass filter.

  • your tutorials are good but DAMN I SWEAR SO MUCH IN YOUR TUTORIALS BECAUSE YOU TAKE SOOOO LONG TO SAY ONE THING

  • Uh my biggest question is why is there a top and bottom?

  • dB is a ratio rather than a fixed measurement, meaning it's not a SPL (Sound Preasure Level) measurement per se. You can if you want to zoom in on any waveform between the beats and go on into infinity and set a point of reference and a point of measurement and say that the measurement is X dB louder than the PoR. dBs are also not linear but logarithmic

Just saying because sooner than later you'll run into a lot of contradicting info about dBs because it's a complete science unto itself ; )

  • Warbeats is the best. PERIOD.

  • how do i know if my mix is not too loud. its seems like its louder than my mp3s

  • My piano teacher had passed away wich made me stop learning about music when i was young. I have looked at all of ur video's today and well.. You gave me that interest in music/audio again like when i was a little kid.

I thank you for it and i really hope you keep doing this. ur a good man and just want to pass on knowledge to others and are succeeding at it. I wish i could do something to let you know the appreciation for doing all this.

    Thank You.

  • Great Video.

  • The intro dragged on a bit with the largely unrelated stuff you were talking about such as music progression, but I really found the rest of this video highly informative and easy to follow. Thanks a lot for taking the time to provide us with your insight, this was really helpful for me.

  • These two or whatever need to quit hating on this guy. He's ultra-helpful and I thank him.

  • (''Master mixer DAVE PENSADO'') - he said - The L1 is my favorite limiter. It’s got a lot of the attributes of an LA-2A, but none of the negatives. I really think that 40 years from now, the L1 will be looked at as a classic, just like the Fairchild compressor is looked at as a classic today. People fawning over software the way they do great analog compressors of today.

  • The Waves L1 is an amazing dynamic limiter for individual tracks or the entire mix bus.

  • All the reviews say that for years industry standard/commercial quality recordings used Waves L1 Plugin and this plugin is more than 15 years old. Wow!!!

  • The waves L1 compresses the entire track and boosts the levels to the output you select. My settings are, Threshold -2.0 and Out Ceiling -0.3. Mastering engineers suggest putting the Out Cealing down to -0.3 db to stay on the safe side and the signal never clips...

  • Many people think that using the "normalize" function on their audio software will maximize the volume to its' full potential. All it really does is maximize the biggest peak of a track - if a snare hit in the track is 3 db above everything else, the snare hit will be maximized to the zero level, but everything else will still be 3 db lower. Compression/limiting will even it out, resulting in maximized loudness. I don't bother to normalize my tracks - I leave that to the L1 Ultramaximizer.

  • The L1 Ultramaximizer is a professional look ahead limiter that can add many decibals to your track without comprimising the sound. I've been able to produced recordings that are just as loud sounding as the major label CDs. For Fl Studio I use the L1 that comes without the IDR, NO IDR, the one with IDR change your sound wen you render your music in FL Studio. Try it, render one track the way you render and look at the mp3 or wav files, then render using the L1 and look at THAT mp3 or wav file.

  • DB is 10log(felt/source)

  • Hey nfx, love your tutorials! Hey i cant find one on using the compressor to minimise the peaks on my kicks and snares, its really bugging me as i cant louden my tracks that much.. if you have one could you tell me which one.. or if you wouldnt mind could you make one of you tweaking your kick with the comressor? CHEERS BRO.

  • could you find out what frequency the peak is hitting at, then subtractive EQ that particular frequency to lower that peak, meaning you can then boost the db without the peak clipping? or would that not work?

sorry if that makes no sence, just thought it could be a good idea.

  • i didtnt fully get much knowledge from this for how long your talked

  • Thanks man!

    Found this extremely informative :)

  • Thanks for the tut!! =]

Really looking forward to the continuation of this Mastering series.

  • i bought a mxl 2001 mic and a m-audio fast track(USB) i plugedin every thing the first time a recorde was really clean and good but when i restated my pc it make a really noisy you can hear the hard driver from the computer and i tried to fix with the gain but it didnt work so plz help me out

    thanks

  • so , somebody help me less db means more ? ex : - 2 db is louder sound that - 20 db?

  • thanks for the info.

    {Benson and Tonic}

  • Can't wait 'til the compression tutorial is out. :)

  • your video is awesome! i'm learned alot! your a great tutorial instructor!

  • now i know what compression is :P

  • there si FL 9 out. is there a chance to get a tutorial about the new version? whats new, whats different, whats better, whats worst. thank you.

  • Your Tuts R Great Bro !

  • wtf are people talking about? audio quality is perfect. You can understand him CLEARLY!

nfx. please dont listen to those *cough* idiots..

  • damn dude, just in time... I was just messing around with the mastering plugins and i logged on to youtube, and there it was...Mastering explained.

  • Nfx is back *.*

  • is any one going to talk musik and fruity loop!?

  • yo nfx could you do a tutorial on how to layer your drums over a samples drums cuz i think its a big issue for most people, keep up the good work

  • no u stupid bitch. I ain't complaining. I know his shit is good, that's why I'm watching them. But there's always room for improvement. Don't always be the victim. Say yea I can do better. So FUCK U TOO.

  • Are you taking the piss tionlover. Your watching the video because you want to learn about something you prob dont have a clue about " hence why your watching the video" Stop being a prick and be thankful somebody wants to help you understand stuff

  • yo why is my edison cursor look like a plus sign.....(+)

  • he said "uhh" at least 8 times just during the first minute!

  • dont watch his videos then. If you can find better videos with better tutorials then go watch them. Stop whining because youd be hard pressed to find better than Warbeats.

  • Stop complaining, be grateful that he is trying to help! He helped me!

  • It's normal for Americans

  • FYI, I do this as a hobby not by profession. I just pass on what I have learned to others. I don't make claims beyond that. I give you the best info I can at the time I record the tutorial

  • Oh man, don't take me wrong! I think it's awesome what you do. I've been producing for over 10 years, but I still learn little things from some of your videos.

  • You need a better mic :(

  • wow thanks! your tutorials always helpfull!! can u make a Spectrum Tutorial. What can i see with it? i see my notes like G#7, A5 and so in in my hint bar at the top. And also i can see the Hz. What does this exactly tell me? How is this useful?

    appreciate!

  • Thanks NFX , You're the man

  • Good tutorials!

  • talking more than usuall?

  • Next time use an EQ for your voice recording and remove the low freq.

  • I'll try that.

When I recorded this one, it was hella hot (no A/C) so I had a fan going across the room and I had to use a noise gate and some EQ to minimize that which may have also played a role in the sound of my voice. A low cut may have done the trick.

  • @ANDiTKO

    Chill fag. Show some respect

  • SAN-KYU BERRY MUCH

  • Thanks, helped a lot, looking forward to compression.

  • I can't wait for the compression tutorial. This was great.

  • Thanks for the tutorial! Keep it up!

  • thanks i reallly needed help with this sometime when i import a song to itunes it sounds very different

  • dont watch then

  • its a tutorial, its not meant for entertainment. If you want entertainment, obviously don't search for tutorials

  • Long live NFX

  • WAR BEATS IS THE BEST>>>>>>

  • very good video, nice. more video about masering!

  • i gotta question? i still get distortion even though i dont pass 0 db. this happens on vocals and basselines. does that have to do with mixing?

i think a tutorial on mixing accapela with instrumental then mastering would be a great TUTORIAL for me.

  • what type of speakers do you use??

  • 2 rockit 8's , but no sub. so im thinking if a sub would solve my problem? any suggestions?

  • well a sub is important for producing anyways . But yea i think it must be your speakers. When its not hitting over 0. doesnt have to be super expensive.

  • what do u suggest?

  • new speakers...it could be any really

i cant tell you any examples. make sure they have a sub

  • well im not gonna buy brand new speakers, im just gonna buy a subwoofer.

  • get krks

  • how do you hook a sub up to your computer aswell as rokits? do you need a external mixer? ive got rp5's and the low end isnt that great without a sub but dont know how to hook one up.

  • its about a god dam time nfx made some updates!!

  • when i become famous one day , because of my beats i will mention you in my first interview. And the tell the people who really helped me on my way to good producer ;)

  • @FirecrackerKing So, hows your music buisness going :P

  • thanks! your videos are really helpful

  • Thanks, great tutorial!

  • nfx's voice has that same gritty grate that DJ Premier's voice has, sounds cool :D

  • I knew what decibels are but i have to say that this is a great tutorial. everyone should easily understand now what decibals are.

    great job and keep up!

  • nfx, is da best tutorial maker here on youtube !!!

  • Great! 5/5

  • ur tutorials r so clear and easy 2 understand uve helped me perfect my songs, thanks soo much!!!

chek out my songs if u wanna c the results of warbeats tutorials

  • Would just like to elaborate on this:

An audio wave form is a picture of the amount of electricity going through the speakers at a given time. When the waveform peaks or 'clips' this is damaging the speakers, as too much electricity is passing through them and causing it to vibrate way too much (sometimes ripping the lining)

  • i cant wait for the next ones. seriously, you're the greatest nfx!!

  • is the first part of the mastering series?

  • creo que si, sin embargo no estoy seguro.

  • Love this tutorial and all other tutorials. NFX, you're a good man. :)
