Absurd dynamics at times, tittering flute passages, baroque veering into the roccoco, especially at the end, but sublime passages and themes throughout. What a piece of music! I find the more I listen, the more I lose myself in the sublime with this piece. I first heard it in the 1960's and it still delights me.
As an aid to understanding this piece it helps to remember that what is happening is that a genius of the twentieth century with a great sense of humour is amusing himself at the expense of geniuses of the eighteenth century.
Think of it as a baroque symphony composed by Prokofiev masquerading as Jim Carrey or Robin Williams, but, thankfully unable to overindulge himself in some truly sublime passages.
It's excesses make perfect comical sense when seen from the proper perspective.
Enrich your lives, people. Don't be so small minded. I love pop music as much as the next person, but to say you hate classical, it's almost as if you're admitting to having no soul!

this guys ugly.why is this video show him only?and its sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo fast
It's necessarily about liking the music you're learning about in school - but it's history, just like any other subject in social studies you might learn about. Pop music had to start somewhere... Learn enough about Classical Music and you learn how to respect it, and in turn, love it.
It's just so you can see where things came from and how all of the music archetypes were created. You just need to know a lot of music in order to begin to understand it... And yes, Popular music does rule. :-D
Last mov sooo fast. Are they trying to kill the flute players? So fast you cannot even hear the fresh chord progression. Check out Rostropovich and the Ochestra de Paris for some very clean articulation in this movement!
@Sinfoniette I'd like to compliment the orchestra on its crisp and clear delivery. Is this a studio group or one of the many other fine ensembles Abbado has conducted?
... and for what it's worth, I think this is a deliciously breakneck interpretation (or rendition, w/e).
This symphony is a parody of the classical symphonies.

God. Why are comments on this page so pretentious? What ever happened to just saying, "This is good music."?

The 4th is to fast... In Karajan´s interpretation you can feel the character of the symphonie! In my opinion: celibidache + Abbado = Karajan :)

I like this version very much. Von Karajan's version is too ponderous. This thing should flow like quicksilver.

I don't think you've allowed yourself to take the time to explore classical music.
Take the time to listen to something that's more than 3 and a half minutes long and that isn't simply verse chorus verse chorus...
Listen to a composer's genius and most intimate disclosures of emotion.

You think this is fast? You should take a listen to Gergiev's recent interpretation with the London Phil.
I think this one was recorded quite transparent...

Abbado is quite a master of Prokofiev - I agree with Delys, this is a very crisp and clear interpretation.

Tell me about it. I'm a flute player and I'm playing excerpts from the Fourth Movement to get into a music school. It is CRAZY!
