Being an ass is not justification to arrest someone. That would make this a dictatorship. But fighting them IS justification for arrest. jaydotkay, NO Officer is going to pull a taser in a situation where deadly force is neccisary. NO ONE should EVER pull a gun on someone unless they are going to shoot them & they better have a damn good reason for doing so. A taser is a non-lethal means of forcing compliance on a combative, noncompliant individual which Meyer clearly was. He refused REPEATED orders to stop resisting. Even with the new, more stringent, guidlines for taser use they STILL would have been justified in tasing him.

But any good American should know how to act around police officers: with some respect. Yes, they acted rashly. But he a) resisted when they were, initially, NOT arresting him, b) FOUGHT with them, both verbally and physically, and c) continued screaming his lungs out. It's not, but even if you HAVEN'T committed a crime, it IS a crime to a) resist arrest, or b) resist police interference. By doing so he made a stupid situation (stupidity thanks to the police) into a ridiculously stupid situation (thanks to himself).

Sojaofdepepo, that's what they were doing. They WERE removing him from the premises for saying 'blowjob' at the mic. They were REMOVING him, not ARRESTING him. So many people keep making the mistake that they were arresting him from the moment they grabbed him from the mic. Not until he fought with the officers and actually pushed the fat black one did his actions escalate into an arrest. His crime was resisting an officer, not resisting an arrest, there's a difference. But they're both crimes.

All students were warned prior to the q&a session that if they used vulgarity during their questions, regardless if their point was valid or not, the mic would be cut & they'd be removed. Initially, they weren't arresting him. They were simply removing him from the premises. But by being an ass about it and FIGHTING them, that DID give them cause to arrest him. What they did was wrong, but hey: the world isn't fair, but you've got to learn to live in it anyway. If he'd been more polite, he might have actually gotten an answer.

Exactly right.
But I don't think they did anything wrong. People are acting like they tased him out of the blue or just to "teach him a lesson".
On some videos you clearly see him fighting his ass of while they hold him down. He's got an arm latched onto a chair & the other is in a cuff. They try to get the free arm behind his back & told him to comply multiple times. They tase him briefly to get his free arm cuffed.

Being an ass is not justification to arrest someone. That would make this a dictatorship. But fighting them IS justification for arrest. However, he wasn't really fighting them as can be seen in the video. All he's doing is making noise and still trying to move around while they're taking him away. That's not grounds to arrest someone unless they're actively running away or hitting the cops.

He wasn't arrested nor tased for that. Not even close. He was arrested for trespassing and trying to incite a riot (he refused to leave and kept yelling for the crowd tohelp him against the cops who were trying to make him leave).
He was tased AFTER finally being arrested and he kept fighting with them. They told him multiple times to put his hands behind his back or be tased.

How can a student trespass on public property of the school they belong to? If he was trespassing then he would have been arrested for just sitting in the audience.
Yes, he did ask the audience for help, but I don't think that classifies as "inciting a riot". He did keep moving around, but that's not "fighting" and tasering for moving and shouting is extreme. Cops have tasered people before for simply shouting and have been sued.

He was kicked out. Students have to follow rules on campus, as do people participating in ACCENT's forum. He was told to leave.
When you are kicked out of a place & refuse to leave this is trespassing, but I'm sure you know that.

No, they just started pulling him away. I'm not denying that he should have left, what I am arguing is that he didn't act up nearly enough to justify tasering. Tasering is for when someone poses a lethal threat. Tasers have killed some victims.

There are numerous witness statements too. Did you never question why all those cops are already around him at the start?
He was told SPECIFICALLY what would get the mic cut & he broke EVERY rule they gave him. They STILL let him go for a while before cutting him off.

He WAS resisting arrest & it IS illegal to do so. That is why the Officers were cleared of any wrong doing in the matter 10+ months ago. Hell, even today with the new, more stringent, guidlines put in place since then they STILL would have been justified given his actions that day.

First thing: do not judge me. if i were being silent, I would say "I doesn't matter, just forget about it". But clearly you have not read a word i said. What they did was terrible. But this guy wasn't asking a question: all he was doing there was trying to use some hot-button issues to look cause an uproar. And he succeed. He easily could have phrased his questions in a manner that would actually get answers: but he wasn't looking for answers!

Not all police are like the ones pictured in that video. And claiming that they are is ignorant, rude, and atrocious.
And please don't bring the war into this. I'm strongly against it and I've been to every protest in the Bay Area. The police here have been nothing but kind to the protesters, and nearly all of them agree with us on the matter of the war in Iraq.
