I have seen this thing flying over Epsom Downs in Surrey. It was years ago and the guy that made it was taking it to an air show. I think the one following was flown by his daughter. But, I never knew the thing had crashed at some point in time till now.
@Allanlegacy43 Sorry I don’t agree mate. There is a very small number of these things flying and they have a comparatively small kill percentage on the crash history. They tend to be close to the ground and are mostly piloted by people with a large number of flying hours in lots of types. Also they go quite slowly and don’t seem to often have catastrophic outs that turn them in to flying bricks. You want a high fill craft try micro lights. Now they can be killers in the wrong hands.
I'm a fixed-wing pilot, but if I understand correctly, if you shove the nose down to pick up airspeed, like we'd do in a plane, you'll unload the rotor, creating a very un-lovely situation. The most important thing in autorotation is rotor rpms, and keeping the stick back enough to avoid unloading.
That's Wing Commander Ken Wallis having a crash as he was too close to the ground to do anything else after the previous stunt when the engine had quit. He is the world's most experienced gyro pilot. He walked away. He was doing a stunt display and as they say "shit happens". He is flying a gyrocopter not a helicopter, and yes always in autorotation. SoloPilot6 should keep his comments to himself when he doesn't know what he is on about.
That was a bad crackup - was it ever determined what had happened? That was very unusual behavior for an autogyro, and the guy's a designer with almost 20 machines.
When he got SASSed (Sudden Airborne Silence Syndrome), all he had to do was keep control and land. Instead, he stopped flying to deal with the engine challenge.
I`m I wrong or maybe he could save his flying machine by flaring a little bit earlier ?If any helicopter pilot see`s this video pls. try to answer me ! 10x !
Unfortunately unlike an aircraft the first 200 ft in a heilicopter you are pretty much gambling with your life. You lose an engine and you are pretty much dead. In an aircraft you can at least glide to and minimize your crash landing speed. i have close to 28,000 incident free hrs in various aircraft. Couldn't imagine that much time in a chopper with no problems.
That's an oversimplification. A helicopter pilot should stay outside of what's known as the "deadman's curve" on his height-velocity chart. There is a modified procedure for a "hovering" autorotation, meaning essentially nap-of-the-earth.
It appears that he would be ok. I hope is survived. He did what you are supposed to do by dipping the nose after engin failed and flairing before hitting.
This was Ken Wallis himself. He is the inventor of this gyroplane. He is legendary in the United Kingdom. The WA-116 can be seen in the film You Only Live Twice.
The guy is an instructor and was doing a demonstration when his engine failed downwind, he ends up demonstrating a low level, downwind emergency landing and walks away unharmed, you notice the nose down attitude as he's trying to gain airspeed.
lilbrudder is right, that's called a gyro-copter. My neighbor had three of them. That was also the poorest attempt at an auto-rotation that i have ever seen. Hope he walked away
goes to show you know nothing about autogiros as they are always autorotating all the time as they are totally diferent to a helicoptor where you have 2 second rule to get into a full autorotation were as gyros you dont hehe and seeing as he was unfortunatly flying downwind when his engine stalled then had to make a full emergancy landing
It's a gyro. See the prop behind the pilot? He should have been able to put it down deadstick, because the rotors providing lift are unpowered. I suspect the ground was very uneven where he set down.
That's old footage of Ken Wallis, inventor and pilot of many early gyrocopters, including Little Nellie which he flew in the '67 Bond film "You Only Live Twice".

He's in a gyrocopter. His landing was a little fast, and a little steep, the ground might not have been all that clear either. Looks like he bounced.

do gyros work as small scale too?

this person just proved once again,,,,autorotation does not work. Give me a pair of wings anyday.
