Thunder can only be heard up to about 6-7 miles away. Sometimes 10mi, but this is rare. You can see a thunderstorm from 100+ miles away. This is much to far away to hear the thunder produced. Now it's interesting that lightning can travel out 10-15 miles away from the rain core. These strikes are rare, but not that rare. This means that lightning can go farther out from the storm than the thunder. ie, don't think you can't be hit just cause you can't hear thunder.
Looks like something I saw a few years ago during a meteor shower. We saw lights flashing a few km's away and went to check it out. It appeared to be lightning shooting up from the ground in a field then arching back and striking where it originated from. The flashes could be seen for over 30kms and it went on for hours, never leaving that spot. I mentioned it at work the other day, and many witnessed it.
i live on long island and out on the great south bay looking towards the atlantic facing south i saw the same exact thing as you did. It was mad wierd cuz it was just orange flashes in the same spot in the sky for bout 15 minutes
Don't think we can tell from this if it is a supercell or not. Looks to me like a non-supercell, as the flash rate is low. Of course supercell has to do with the storm's structure, which we can't see.
it was sooooo wierd last night it didnt look nothin lyk this.....the whole sky was flashing nigh it looked lyk turning a bathroom light off and on ovr and ovr all niight.....it was n florida
i saw some awesome and beautifull once in a life time lightning it was like this but pinkis and much much more of it across the eastern sky it was so cool
This reminds me of something I witnessed 10 years ago, after a very nasty thunderstorm. There were very thin clouds, thin enough that moon could clearly been seen through them, and lightning bolts kept flashing through the clouds every 5 for 10 seconds, lasting for almost an hour! Interestingly enough, no sound of thunder could be heard at all even though the bolts were intense and numerous.
it neither because in cloud and cloud to ground cant strike in the same place twice and sprite lightnings discharges get larger when in one spot and usually stop after three strikes
On first viewing I thought we were looking at a phenomenon known as sprites. When I freeze it there appears to be some cloud being illuminated, so it is probably just distant lightning seen through a ground haze. I could be wrong though.
Yes. This is lightning that is illuminating parts of the top of a distant storm cloud. The distance and thickness of the atmosphere makes the flashes appear red.
its lightning in the clouds, the lightning always starts in the clouds before it comes out them.

They are not sprites. It is in-cloud lightning.

Yes this is the top ofa distant storm with lightning inside. The colour depends onthe time of night and also the haze between.

normal lightning appearing in distant clouds...
it is red because of this distance and dense atmosphere.
