Not a stepped leader. It's a video artifact. It's a ghost copy of the lightning bolt at the top of the screen. The strike was still close, but there was no failed stepped leader here.

Oh you got a hit...Sorry didn't scroll down. One of my friends told me he was sitting indoors on a metal chair and felt a jolt. The bolt hit a chimney next door around 30 feet away or so. Check out this one...Man hit by lightning This guy was outside in the open area on the side of the road. I think the lightning hit the car and he was standing just around 10 or 15 feet away. If he was any closer to the vehicle, he probably would have been killed.

Well you have 90% chance surviving a strike, though I have seen VEEEEERY disturbing vies of it happening though. Crazy. I've seen 4 close strikes, one that I have on my account taped. That's a little compared to the amount of lightning I watch happily in the open and how I know the safety rules inside and out though I choose to completely ignore them.

I watched it four times, wondering if it actually did strike the building next to you or maybe a block (or half-block) away. After pausing it at the time of the strike, I see it did hit the building next to you. It was amazing that it seemed to escape damage.

You also caught a thin stroke before the main one, or the "lead" stroke. That's pretty rare to catch that with a regular video camera.

You were lucky to get an amazing shot, and without injury.
