Fuck me - stop squabbling about dates and stuff - this is a TUNE from a long long time ago that we all love - the details don't matter - Freedom to party:))))
back in '88 we had a name for people who didn't dance and just tried to identify each tune as it came on... ummm what was it now... ummm... ah yes... trainspotter.
yeah, its about the clubs u heard them at and being back in the day - couldn't honestly tell u what year i hear it but it woz definitely when it first came about, and yes, rockshots in newcastle (on toon) is closed now as well. old skool - when it started!
just seen all your comments, i was at the haceianda in Feb 1990 and this was being played, so it was out before 1991 !! And anyway who the FUCK cares who heard it first the fact is its a great tune or nobody would take the fuckin time to coment
@deejayevol i bought this record which i still have, from 23rd percint i left glasgow in 1991 .i have a friend who dj's and he brought michael k to my house after playing a gig in our perthshire town and i remember rambling on telling him he sold me some of the records he could see before him ,he was chewing the face off hiself so i didn't think he had a clue what i was on about. but Glasgow 1990 city of culture clubs open till 6am ,white doves happy days
i have an original 12-inch of this @jifster72 and it is from 1990 they even were producing other groups or remixing for the likes of react 2 rythm and ultra nate before this but i'm sure this was their debut. great use of Willam De Foe's voice saying People on this track sampled from Mississippi burning and the last scene in this film is a pic of a gravestone with not forgotten on it
I managed to get this on tape (a copy from a fellow student at the time) in Autumn 1990. The DJ at the Tunnel, Glasgow used to drop this in all the time - also the owner of 23rd Precinct Records in Glasgow, Scotland. God Bless U MK! -- You know who you are. RIP 23rd. x.
soz ment to say the original track is from 88 not this poor remix u kinda are wrong saying this track is from 91 its not even if the guys didnt form till 91 who remixed it ,its in fact a white label from 88 released proper in 89 so actually i am right er i will be keeping my tapes as they are so rare the stuff on them is near imposible to get hold of but if i do share on on youtube ill be sure to send you the link it will aide in your education on house music only to happy to help regards
@thegoon1964 ....so we are agreed that the TRACK ABOVE (look up ^), is by LEFTFIELD, a group formed in 1990, released on promo in 1990, then officially in 1991?- So officially, I'd say that makes me right? Btw, the track was written by (and copywritten to) Neil Barnes, of Leftfield. So if he sampled it from the track on your legendary 'tape', he's in trouble! - If you STILL don't believe me, go to Discogs, do some research, & get your facts right. Now please go away and leave us in peace. :o)
@thegoon1964 - Just checked the original vinyl = 1991. Then checked the Outer Rythm back catalogue = 1990 (on promo). As for '1988'.....erm, the band (N. Barnes & P. Daley) didn't even form until 1990. Nice try....... oh, and you can keep your 'mix tape', thx. :o)
@supawills They were great days little brother. It makes me heart all warm and fuzzy to think the that younger generation are still keeping the faith, keep on keeping on.
1. Venus was the first house music club I went to back in my student days. I felt like I'd walked into another dimension! Instantly hooked: never looked back.
2. Not Forgotten was first tune I practiced mixing with [my mate with decks had 2 copies]. Hours spent trying to master beat mixing on my first comedown. It was like being on a Mobius strip. I think this tune's left a mark on my DNA!
OMG!! Goose bumps all over. I'm in Venus, it's Saturday night and for some reason i've got shoulder length hair and leather trousers on! Well, it seemed more cool than Village People back in the early nineties!! I still love the Mississipi Burning sample! "People"
yeah venus was the dogsall the older gclubbers who got me into the scene used to swear by it, iwas too young. think it was james bailey's gig whom i hung out with at a few of his other gigs years latter, top bloke!
@89toonz I remember a DJ in Edinburgh used to mash this up with the acapella of "People Hold On" by Coldcut & Lisa Stansfield. That worked rather nicely too...
love this track (my copy is dogeared to say the least) and how cool a club was venus. nice vid.
heard andy weatherall play there and he played that track by stereogen - resonance - a truly amazing moment in time that I still remember to this day!!!
hey denmyster01, think I was with you the whole time, i drove the bleedin car back from shellys and then upto Glasgow whilst you were makin' no sense in the back!!! that was a dam good weekend.....
this is my favourite song in the whole world i had it on a white label 12inch i got it from hard to find records when it 1st came out it cost me 20 quid what a bargain
Jif... absolute brilliant tune and send me way back... much appreciated and you know your music...
Quick story about Shelly's, I flew over from Belfast to meet a couple of mates in Manchester, went to the Haci on Thurs nite and then down to Shelly's for Fri nite and when getting into car to home at 2 in the am decided to drive up to the Sub Club in Glasgow for the Sat night...
All jet fuelled on micro dots and whizzzzz... so you can imagine how much sense we were making by Sunday....!!!
Saying that, the hac went all labelley (it was full of poseurs from about late 91 anyway) and I refused to buy a pair of leather pants and/or a destroy top just to get in...but I'm glad there was a backlash against hardcore...and I'm glad hardocre grew up into d&b. Good music is good music
Thanks forposting this top tune! THE HOUSE Manchester RIP...just to add to this whistles vs. labels debate...I stopped going out in late 92 because the records I was into (breakbeat) just got stupid. How can you dance to 160 bpm? And it got very mainstream with loads of knobheads who 2 months earlier were fighting in sharon and tracy clubs suddenly descending into monged out pill freaks. So is it any wonder some people fucked that scene off for another?
Probably already seen it, as I looked for Shellys footage a while ago, but I'll take another look if it keeps u happy! ;o)
F.Y.I, I'll soon be wiping this whole conversation, as this arguement is tediously boring and largely irrelevant to other ppl who will want to watch this vid. I'm not 'blocking' you, as I believe in freedom of speech, but this 'comments' page isn't (and never was) a tool for ppl to pass unfounded and wild accusations about clubs (or the clientele) they know little about.
DRokk, I think you were just probably too mental to get in? If you were this angry as a yoof, I wouldn't have let you in either. - Your arguement is 'class' based, suggesting you needed designer labels and wads of money to get in? Total cr*p, you just needed to wear what was considered 'in' at the time. That isn't elitism, nor a sign of arrogance. IT'S FOLLOWING A FASHION MOVEMENT. LIKE ALL MODS DO?? - Live with it.
jif you are a total contradiction yet again, i couldn't show passion/aggression, i was too switched on/mental, i needed to wear what you though fashionable!?
that IS a show of elitism and sign of arrogance.
go look up some footage of shellys son. a proper club.
better still come to Glastonbury festival this year and visit the 10 dance music areas. you may see how very wrong you are. xxx
Fyi, - I USED TO GO TO SHELLEYS. Another great club, but when Venus opened, I fancied a change of scenery and a different 'vibe', so moved on - Nothing elitist or arrogant about that - It was just my choice. Btw, Venus was much smaller than Shellys, so they had to have some sort of door policy....or do you propose that they should've allowed us all to dance in the street in the true spirit of freedom and unity? I just don't get how u can knock a club that just wasn't 'for you'. I liked it! :o)
hrm.... two rather large paragraphs, maybe ill have a go! and now the imminent censorship of the whole thread!? did the shellys footage hit a nerve?
you said in your last post "Fyi, - I USED TO GO TO SHELLEYS."
i have my doubts but i will take your word on it.
watch the footage again... where is the elitist bouncer /club owner saying"him not her , her not him hes got a moustache! hes wearing a checked shirt no! no way for him hes got trainers on who does he think he is!
i dont have any resentment towards your love of venus or a 100 clubs like it that spung up. i apologise for my first post on this thread though. i came across it late 1 night wondering if my all time favourite dance tune had made it to you tube, luck/fate brought me to your post as its not the fault of anyone that you felt the need to use one of the most awesome dance tracks ever made to be the sound track to a very nice personal film about a club you loved/love
I think ur missing the point. Nobody 'killed the scene' - it just moved on. Venus was popular because it dared to be different at a time when the rave scene was going very mainstream, and some ppl wanted a change. Because 'woolly hats and whistles' were considered 'rave' (& Venus became a GARAGE/BALEARIC/PROGRESSIVE club), ppl got turned away. I don't see how this makes it pretentious, it just means it wasn't for ravers?
Btw, I put my music up for EVERYONE TO ENJOY, so be nice, in future ;o)
with your aggressive attitude its a good idea you stayed at home with your glows sticks and baby D records (done us all a favour that doorman!) Venus was a great club I still see James who ran. Also Naked lunch and Love Ranch in London where top nights out as well.
funny you say that. i was/is a mod too pal. i never thought any of my friends should be excluded from having a fun time with me because they didn't have the right gear though.
ah well all in the past i suppose now. when i go out my trainers come too. guess we may never be in the same club on the same night Jon. shame that.
just fuckin awesome the track just ticks along until that break then that big electric organ noise just cuts the room in two just superb you had to scrape me off the ceiling if this came on in the club when i was on the dancefloor
