I find it funny that people say someone is half one nationanlity and half other thing. in my country your nationality is the country you were born. Your parents nationality and ethnicity is your cultural background
Ayọ (born as Joy Olasunmibo Ogunmakin on 14 September 1980 in Frechen near Cologne, Germany) is a Nigerian-German singer-songwriter. She uses the Yoruba translation Ayọ or Ayo. of her first name Joy. The name has to be written with a dot below or behind the o – without it, it would refer to a pitted board game[1] popular among the Yorubas.
Hey guys, sorry to disappoint you. If you look her up on Wikipedia, you'll find she's half Nigerian and half Romani. For those of you who don't know, Romani and Romanian are two different nationalities - Romani is another term for Gypsy, which you will also find by using that site. As some of you might tell, I'm Romanian, and I meant no disrespect, they were always very good when it comes to music, not to mention Ayo's a great singer!
As a musician and singer I´m always happy to find out about quality music and historic uploads. Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful song with us. Keep up the good work!
Nigeria or not Nigerian, Romanian or not Romanian, livin in New York or not livin in New york dat to me doesnt count. What counts is dat dis girl is a class A artist. She's in a class of her own. I wish i had such a girl 4 a girl friend then she would sing my sorrows away.
In my personal opinion, I prefer Ayo over Alicia Keys... It is a waste that the world dedicates sooo much time at listening so comercial music (Not talking about Alicia) but that makes artist like Ayo even more exclusive! Let's thank life for one of the best girls from Nigeria and enjoy these jewels! Ayo, you are A COMPLETE ARTIST!
@dejiariyo Actually they are my top two african vocalists... I loooove Asa too but they sound pretty different, Ayo sounds much thinner and softer than Asa, wich has a very strong voice, but both are just brilliant.
are they? lolz I didn't know. I knew Asa was, but I just started listening to Ayo. (^_^) haha Nah that's not why though. They just have a similar style of music. and there's just something about the voices that I just can't pin down.
what a beautiful and calm voice... a perfect song for this evening and for this winter.... and for the snow outside.. just close your eyes and dream... thank u, ayo...
Ok, to everyone who's arguing about her nationality, she's nigerian and romanian (her dad's nigerian and her mom romanian). Her name's Ayo, meaning "Joyful" in the yoruba language in nigeria. It's likely her name's longer than that, probably "Ayo-something" and she shortened it to Ayo, but it could just be "Ayo." Some of her other videos are also set in Nigeria ("Life is real," "Slow slow," and "Help is coming's also Nigerian-related). So she's nigerian & romanian.
@tdottchickk@tdottchickk Nothing personal, but her mother is not Romanian. She's one of the Roma people, Roma being what Gypsies call themselves. They, as we know are a people without a home country. She explained this in detail in an interview i watched, so shes;s technically Nigerian and Gypsy.
@MsZaichik, i read on another site that she was. but why would this be personal?? lol, not at all. i have seen the video where she talks about being a gypsy after writing that and that made me more confused. but where are roma people from? u say they don't have a home, but what country are they situated in or do they move around or what? :0)
@tdottchickk lol just to be cautious i guess....cuz there are some fierce keyboard warriors out there that will take it personal :(
Yea, they do not technically have a home..They are said to have started out in India, but now they sort of just move about like Nomads, and have gotten properly mixed along the way, so defining an ethnicity even is difficult. They might settle in certain countries and more or less adopt the language and what not, but they still have a very strong Gypsy culture...
@tdottchickk I'm Romani and we are originally from India--of the Rajput Caste, to be exact. Most Roma are settled; some are nomadic. Often, it depends on what kind of Roma they are. Some tribes have been settled for hundreds of years, for example. By and large, we're a diaspora people--same as the Jews. We live therefore in many places today. Ayo's Romanian Roma, like me. In Romania, the Roma were slaves for hundreds of years--AKA, "settled."
a beautiful song about a very painful ugly subject -it touched the core- feelings that can not be explained to another unless they lived-survived a love like that
