Wow I have the ultimate FML: I just bought a triple rec half stack from a guy on craigslist and got home at 10:00 PM so it's too late to play it! (true story)
what are your settings for the metal tone? please include eq and diode setting or whatever that switch on the back is that tightens or loosens the sound. Also, please include volume levels, master and channel. Thanks in advance!
@blahblahblahx2 I'd go with the single. If your really good with controlling your tone with your guitar that is. Solo 50's you don't have to push as hard to get the sweet spot, and you only have 2 channels (which is all you really need).
@TheSlayerLair Do you mean by controlling your pick attack and all that jazz? I have heard that these amps are pretty sensitive to mistakes and all that
There isnt a huge difference in tone, the 100 watt has more headroom so it needs to be cranked louder. There isnt much of a volume difference either. I prefer the Solo 50. 100 watts is overkill in any application. 50 watts is anough power and easy to crank. Go with the 50
Dual has more headroom so it's better for metal. You have to EQ it though or run a boost or it sounds like crap. Mesa dual rectifier and boosted mids and gain using a MXR KK 10 band and proper amp EQ settings makes some awesome sounds. The amp dry just can't be made to sound great for anything other than rock though.
The only real difference is that one has two channels and the other has three. Also depending on how loud you play or if you play gigs. If you want to use the clean channel at large venue gigs than get the Dual Rec, If you only use overdriven settings than the Single Rec would work just fine.
I have a Dual and I love it especially when I use Vaccum Tubes position. But There's no vaccum tubes on Single Rectifiers so... If you don't need vaccum tubes and you just play on Diode position I think both amps are pretty close.
Mesas are amazing amps. The industry standard for metal today. It's almost hard to find a popular metal band that doesnt play Mesa Boogie (i know there are bands that dont, but a huge portion does)..
shit loads man, like metallica uses this amp in their live setup, killswitch engage, korn used these, like check out the mesa website, so many artists
Indeed SYL are fucking awesome, real shame Dev split though. He's using some other amp instead of a Boogie now though. There amps are black & purple & Leslie West endorses them, i forgot what there called, erm........i think its Budda Amps or something im not sure.
Dream Theater, and Kirk Hammett used Mesas before joining Randall, Nergal from Behemoth uses mesas as well, and many others I'm sure, cuz they don't have to pay for them
Hey man,do you know if James is going to sign with Blackstar?I hear as soon as Kirks Randall contract is up he is going to sign with them also.Anyway just wondering if anyone else has heard that to see if its true or not.
B) Mark Tremonti, Kurt Cobain, Willie Adler, Mark Morton, Andy Timmons, James Hetfield, Devin Townsend, both guys from Coheed and Cambira, and dozens more use Mesa.
C) Mesa doesn't give out amps. You may be able to get a discount, im not sure on that, but I have been told by several friends in the "business" that Boogie will not give out amps for free.
free publicity. if your name and band name is posted on the mesa website, and in all the magazines then people will check you out.
and in the case of mesa unlike other companies, you are the one deciding to endorse them, rather than a company paying you and asking you to endorse them.
I think this amp as a good sound but precision is really missing ... thats why Laboga amps are so great ... with a fantastic 6l6 sound and an incredible precisison ... ;-))

Great review. Best one I've found on youtube. I don't know about everyone else but I like to play a little variety and like having an amp that can do it all. Your video is the only one that shows how versatile this is. Props. Anyone know how much this costs at GC if you buy the head and cab? They don't sell mesas online so I can't look on any websites.
Thanks ;-)) t's always the same setting : it's the vintage mode ,my setting is : master : 5/10 Presence : 4,5/10 Bass : 4/10 Med:6/10 Treble :6/10 Gain:7/10 I only change the sound with the volume of the guitare ;-)) Jean

Wow, I'm convinced now, I want a Mesa Boogie. Actually this set up seems perfect for me, Single Rectifier 50 with a 2x12 cab. That's just awesome. How do you think this would fit for extreme metal music?

I would really enjoy if you could make a video on how brutal your setup can be, but i know it's not really your thing...
Hello ;-)) thank you for your comment ... but not working any more with the importer of Mesa Boogie in France so I would not make more video with this amp ....
I saw someone is selling a Mesa DC-5 Head for 750$CND, it doesn't look new, but I'm very confused now. Most reviews are saying it's a real killer Head for Metal. Have you ever tryed it? If yes, could you tell me how it compares with the Single Recto? (keep in mind I'm not a versatile player, I mostly play heavy stuff, I listen to other type of music tho). I ask many question because this is a lot of money and possibly a life investment.
DC is from Mark family amps. Maybe the earlier versions. So I guess the only way is to try it. And it wouldn't sound like recto. It's a different amp. Even different series of the amp. Mesa's are all suitable for heavy music. But there is difference in tone anyway between the series.
Why would anyone care what someone with a name like "nightshit" thinks. This guy fontanille is accomplished whether you're capable os realizing it or not. Tes bien mon amie.
Mesa Boogie are hand made amplifier ... so the price is .... but when you have one ... it's for all your life ... it's an incredible amp ... so ... it's less expensive than changing your amps all the 6 month because it don't give you the sound that you want ;-)))
are there any drawbacks to the guitar? intonation ect? do you think it's worth what you paid because i live in the us and the cost of getting one here will be a pretty penny. lucky for me the local luthier we have is one of the best in the world and he's worked with vigier before. i don't play in standard tuning so i'd have him set it up and make sure everythings in PERFECT working order even though i know vigier has very professional with setups from the factory any input helps thank you!
i've got an excalibur supra, you will have no intonation problems whatsoever. i have yet to find anything i dislike, the neck is perfect, the sustain and tone that comes out of it is fabulous. it's a really great instrument. GET ONE DUDE!!!!
what do you think of vigier as opposed to say paul reed smith or ibanez? better or about the same in value? i like the idea of the carbon in the neck eliminating the need to adjust the truss rod since there's not one
I think Vigier Guitars are just the very best i have ever played ... the neck is just incredible ... very very easy to play ... very dynamic ... and the sound of this guitar is just incredible ... you can play everything with that guitar ... I have played many other before ... but i really love Vigier guitars ... it's the absolute weapon ;-))
im glad u did this video. every other one i watched was cranked full blast, and distorting so bad i was beginning to think this amp to be a peice of junk. sounds great, and excellent playing. thanks dude.
Great playing, Great tone! Finally someone out there who doesn't demo it as just another metal amp! I'm def bying this amp! But is that a 2x12 or a 4x12 cabinet?
Very nice examples of what the amp is capable of, the single rectifier is still my favorite amp even after 7 years of using it. Very nice playing as well. Thanks for a great informative video.

A bientôt !

Mesa Boogie are hand made amplifier ... so the price is .... but when you have one ... it's for all your life ... it's an incredible amp ... so ... it's less expensive than changing your amps all the 6 month because it don't give you the sound that you want ;-)))

are there any drawbacks to the guitar? intonation ect? do you think it's worth what you paid because i live in the us and the cost of getting one here will be a pretty penny. lucky for me the local luthier we have is one of the best in the world and he's worked with vigier before. i don't play in standard tuning so i'd have him set it up and make sure everythings in PERFECT working order even though i know vigier has very professional with setups from the factory any input helps thank you!
brandon5pennies 3 years ago
i've got an excalibur supra, you will have no intonation problems whatsoever. i have yet to find anything i dislike, the neck is perfect, the sustain and tone that comes out of it is fabulous. it's a really great instrument. GET ONE DUDE!!!!

Hello,
the supra model is fantastic guitar ... ;-)) really fantastic ;-))

Fontanille 3 years ago
That depends on what you're going for. Either the 'marshall sound' or the rectifier sound

what do you think of vigier as opposed to say paul reed smith or ibanez? better or about the same in value? i like the idea of the carbon in the neck eliminating the need to adjust the truss rod since there's not one
brandon5pennies 3 years ago
I think Vigier Guitars are just the very best i have ever played ... the neck is just incredible ... very very easy to play ... very dynamic ... and the sound of this guitar is just incredible ... you can play everything with that guitar ... I have played many other before ... but i really love Vigier guitars ... it's the absolute weapon ;-))
