She died in 2000 or 2001. She was hit by a speedboat, while rescuing her son. The boat was in a swimming area illegally, and it resulted in some big scandal. You can find details in Wikipedia-- that's what I did.

I didn't know about it either until a couple of months ago. I'm American, and I'd barely heard of her until recently. But I've been finding lots of great songs here on Youtube.

Her death is very contentious. The boat was owned by one of the richest people in Mexico, Guillermo Gonzalez Nova, and according to police reports was being driven by a deckhand Jose Sen Yam who couldn't tell his right from his left. Kirsty pushed her son out of its path (Shows her character) and it went over her.

We need more Kirsty Maccolls in this world, and Mexico needs one less...

No one and everyone - it is easy to 'read' a meaning into songs - people do it about Bob Dylan all the time - but songs are usually about 'universal themes', full of imaginary people, a mosaic/montage of characters and emotions, hence 'Innocense' can be about anyone you want it to be about, man, woman or other than ... 'Whatever gets you through the night' (Mick Jagger).

This was the first KM 10 inch single that I bought for someone else ... still a classic.

With a song like this, I suppose it's natural and understandable to wonder who the person in question is, particularly since it paints such an unflattering picture. That was very much the case with Carly Simon's "You're So Vain" back in the early '70s; as I recall, she maintained that it was actually about several people rather than any one person in particular.
