This song happens to be one of the timeless classics of all time. Undoubtedly a contender for Top Ten Male & Female Duets of all time....................Two superb voices blended together to make a Splendid Fantabulous song........hats off to Levi and Aretha! Well done!!!
As the lyricist on this song, I am heartwarmed by all of these amazing comments. We knew we had written something special that day in my office on the A&M Records lot. My wonderful collaborator Todd Cerney, who wrote this beautiful music, passed away yesterday in Nashville. He was only 57, still handsome, talented and a beautiful spirit, struck down too soon. He wrote me recently that this was his favorite record ever. Levi asked Aretha to sing this with him.Jerry Knight produced-Pamela Oland
@lyricalpov I'm bowing to you, Pamela. Thank you and your partner so much for giving us one of the greatest duets ever. Levi and Aretha together; it really doesn't get better than this. It's a perfect song and you've given the world a gift. Good on you!
If ever a song was underrated, if ever a tune was gone forgotten, if ever a lyric went without credit: it was this one. This gorgeous and sparkling tune should have been much more popular.....I found it on the b side of a song Aretha did with Whitney (IT ISN'T , IT WASN'T , IT AIN'T EVER GONNA BE)....But this song was the real gem....their voices go great together with this wonderful lyric and the production and arrangement just glisten. Kenny G is phenomenal as usual. #1 in my book!!!!
@MegaTyler98 You are so right it was also in I'm Gonna Get you Sucka, the comedy movie by Keenan Ivory Wayans and it was a very underrated, but beautiful piece...Levi and Aretha have two strong, dynamic voices together!
@MegaTyler98 I truly agree with you on that. If I hadn't of seen the comedy some years ago, "I'm Gonna Git U Sucka" I wouldn't have ever even knew this beautiful song existed.
The most beauiful song I ever heard in my life. Thank you Aretha and Levi. I love you Levi Stubbs. You are the greatest singer in the world. Heaven is a better place because of you. Please sing to my Mother for she is up there, too. Rest in peace Levi Stubbs. I hope to see you up there when my time comes. Francine J. Morshed from Buffalo, New York
What a beautiful song, as hilarious as the movie "I'm Gonna Git U Sucka" was this was a serious love song thanks for uploading it. Good music is a wonderful thing to listen to and enjoy. I agree Aretha and Levi had such great chemistry together. R.I.P. Levis your music lives on.....
@dhills2009 Me too. When I heard it in "I'm Gonna Git You Sucka", I really wanted to hear this song. So, about four years ago, I ordered it off of Amazon and now it's stuck in my head. And I play it a lot and even sing it sometimes. This song was really slept on, it had all the right things to be a hit. But, it's people have embraced this song and love it like me. R.I.P. Levi and Get Well Soon, Aretha.
@QCongress83 EXTREMELY slept on!!! I was just thinking this morning about the final line from this song: "that was the time"......that line musically and lyrically sums up the whole feeling of the song: a memory of a great time......This song is a true representation of a glorious time and that final line sums the whole thing up. I have read a review on the album of Aretha's that this song is from and it was bashed, being compared to cold toast. Boo! This song is a mega hit in my book!!
this song penetrates me, i get shivers... it's a most amazing song....
thank u Aretha and 4tops
when our eyes met... there was nothing left to say...
if ever a love there was, if ever two stars were crossed, if ever a dream was lost, then it was Yours and Mine...... a future looked bright... FANTASTIC lyrics
fantastic lyrics indeed, and i've lived it, so this song just captivated me from the first time i heard it all those years ago. thanks so much for taking the time to comment!!
@Starelen There are some songs that come along that have all the perfect ingredients. If Ever A Love There Was,has that. Levi is our treasure...Fourever !!!!
Levi Stubbs, if my current relationship does not work out and only time will tell. Then I hope to meet a beautiful man in your image and in your ways. Whatever happened to men like you? God Bless your wife of 48 years! I wish I could have met you!!! I hope to meet you in Heaven! I love you Levi. From Francine J. Morshed in Buffalo, New York
Levi Stubbs, I see you Now as I once saw you THEN! YOU are the GREATEST AND ALWAYS WILL BE! YOUR voice captivates me and can pick me up on my darkest days. This is my favorite song for all eternity. I hope to see YOU in heaven. In my eyes, YOU are still HANDSOME Love always, From Francine J. Morshed in Buffalo, New York
Levi Stubbs, You are the greatest and my favorite singer in all the world. You always will be. I especially admire the true and everlasting brotherhood that the Four Tops share to this very day. God Bless You and The Four Tops! Live Forever!
From Francine J. Morshed in Buffalo, New York I love you Levi!!!! Rest in Peace
This song was on the jukebox of my favorite night spot- I was very much in love with someone at the time, and the song became "our song"- when we had to part it was the worst day of my life- but I know you are looking down on me and we'll see each other again someday- you were my world and I hope I was yours. I never forgot, and keep you locked inside my heart. You were the best, and if ever a love there was, it was surely yours and mine.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!! To the one and only Queen in American music. The Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin. She is 67 today. By the way it was 1967 that she recorded her ultra hit R E S P E C T.
You're right. They did do a duet. Aretha and Levi Stubbs sang "I Wanna Make it Up to You" on Aretha's Jump to It album. It's a great ballad. It's on YouTube posted by TheReturnofMusic.
Thank you so much for the information. They did a great job with this song. Naturally these teo giant of music are truly singers. It is a shame that today's singes can even hold a candle to them.
simply don't know redwalls. she's done a lot of duets, but this one is the only one i was aware of with levi. she did do 'jump to it' with geo. benson on one of his LP's, but 'united' doesn't ring a bell with me. maybe someone can help.
No they didn't there was this one from the 1988 Indestructible album, There is also I Wanna Make It Up To You from the Jump album, and the Aretha also sang about three songs with The Tops on their 1995 album Christmas Here With You.
pghpookie...thanks for posting that song. i remember it from about 20 years ago and i tried in vain to find it before. it's a gorgeous song, and beautifully done by incredible talent. thanks again.
