  • ive herd other versions of this song..and this one tops em.....me being a railfan on the NO&M sub that L&N used to own. this song is just awesome

  • Amen on the Silver album. One of Johnnies best and deserves to be on CD.

  • Youtube quality doesn't do this song justice, you gotta hear it on vinyl to get the true feel.

  • Another masterpiece from "Silver."

  • my dad had this song on a cassette and we used to listen to it all the time in the car. thanks for posting this and bringing back some great memories

  • I had this on 8-track,when I was 16.

  • Love this song.W'd like to hear Muddy Waters takin back, and I'll say it's true, also. Thanks, for this one. Wish they'd redo the whole Silver album on CD. It was overlooked for some reason.

  • @glencoe6305

The album is released on CD

  • This was the Golden age of Country Music !''

  • who recorded the original version of this song?

i know the song being from eastern ky.

  • @jutmo

I don't know, I only know that it's written by Jean Ritchie.

  • @JohnnyCashShow I think it's Jean Ritchie herself. (there's a good version by J.baez &J Ritchie). On "Silver" one of the best (and saddest )songs sung by Cash,"muddy waters" also coversd by Nick cave.Another( love )song ,one of the lesser known,is called "the cow boy who started the fight, covered by Cash.....

  • @jutmo I believe the first recording, at least the one I am most familiar with-and in my opinion the best version was by Michelle Shocked

  • @jutmo the recording I am most familiar with, and the best IMO is by Michelle Shocked

  • @jutmo I can tell you there is a very good version in an old LP of Michelle Schocked, I think THE CAMPFIRE TAPES or SHORT SHARP SHOCKED, but the song was written from Jean Ritchie.

  • @jutmo I can tell you there is a very good version in an old LP of Michelle Schocked, I think THE CAMPFIRE TAPES or SHORT SHARP SHOCKED, but the song was written from Jean Ritchie. Here on YouTube you can listen also a very good version well played and sung from "granniejans".

  • The Silver album is underrated, has some great ones on it. This is one of them. Also liked "Lately I've been leanin' towards the blues". Maybe you could upload that some time, JohnnyCashShow?

  • Of course!

  • hi stupid recuest maybe but coul you post the lyrics to the side!?

  • ????

  • Most of the songs Cash does with Columbia or Sun that he covers on American, I like the American version better. But for this song, I prefer it from this album over "Redemption Songs".

  • I've never heard this before. Thanks very much for posting one of Johnny's lesser known songs.

  • You're welcome!
