This is funny. Honestly, the reason ppl don't understand is because they haven't breastfed a baby that cries 8+ times a day for food. @angerdux8 I understand that, but have you ever tried to cover a baby over the age of 4 months? as soon as they develop the ability to pull a blanket off their head, they will do it. I'm not going to take out my breast and chase anyone around or sit there with it just hanging out when the baby isn't eating, but I'm not going to tuck myself and my baby into a dark corner and hide. I'm not going to intentionally expose myself, but I'm not going to make myself incomfortable either.
I will find a comfortable (preferably quiet) spot to sit, get my baby ready to eat, I wear nursing tops, so very little is actually out of my shirt anyway, and as soon as the baby is latched on I also tuck my shirt around the babys mouth so even less is showing... but thats what I'm comfortable doing. If the women around me have an issue with their husband seeing a breast, I'd suggest those women talk to their husbands, not me... I'm not doing it for attention, I'm just feeding my baby. Thanks

I've had ppl come up to me & say "oh, sweet, he's sleeping", then realize that, no he's eating, when he turns to see. They had no idea until they were within 3 feet of us. nursing tops are great, they allow a very small amount of breast to be out, just enough for my son to eat, & not enough for ppl to see. if you're uncomfortable, thats your issue, not mine or the managers. I'm not doing anything wrong.
@JCossar1 Actually those nursing tops are great and make it so you dont have to cover the baby up but allows for some modesty. I wish I couldve breastfed both my kids. I did express my breastmilk for my son when he was born 3 months premature for the nurses to give to him via his feeding tube which they enhanced with extra vitamins he needed to grow so in a way he did breastfeed and I think it was a big part of why he did so well being born SO early!
My daughter though I wasnt able to breastfeed sadly. I tried for almost a week but she had a problem latching on and I was offered NO help what so ever to make a good go of it. On top of things I had had a C section and was unable to sit up for nearly 48 hrs due to pre-eclamsia issues. I applaud those of you that are able to breastfeed! Dont let anyone make you feel bad for doing it...even in a store.

Sometimes it's too hot to cover and it's also not good for them to breathe in their own CO2. Should women have to pump or stay home just because they breastfeed?
The whole breastfeeding in public issue can really go either way, at least for me. I get that it's a natural thing, it makes perfect sense. But many things can be backed up by saying that, like urinating in public or having sex in public. I personally don't think that natural-ness of breastfeeding is necessarily a good argument because of that. It's also the fact that just because a woman is breastfeeding, doesn't make breasts a non-sexual part of the body to others.

Some will take the opportunity to capture it with their cell phones unknown to you.
I've seen more women respond inappropriately to breastfeeding as a man is more likely to be embarrassed by it than anything else. I think a woman breastfeeding is lovely and, to be fair, a sexual thing but I don't use "sexual" in a perverse or titilating way. It's nothing but a byproduct of natural, healthy sexuality. @lesterclaypool1 I base my comments on the fact that I have worked in an all male environment for many years, and having been subjected to sexual abuse by some of these men when I was a younger employee.
Thankfully I've had many good male friends who have spoken openly of how as you say, they do find it embarrassing because like you they find it hard to disassociate the sexual side of it. I think it's fair to say there needs to be respect but both ways, women can be discreet if they choose.

I think breast feeding is the best, it's natural. But I think it's fair that women also attempt to show some discreetness, there is no harm in turning a chair around or lightly covering yourself with a blanket. Respect works both ways, when I breast feed it's not just all about my right to breast feed and to hell with everyone else.
As Ketchme17 responded, some women have made breastfeeding a talking point for empowerment when it should just be the necessity that it is. There's a video on this site of a woman, who is still breastfeeding an 8 year old, has made the act of breastfeeding into some sort of mythos or matriarchal worship which is not only sick but wholly unhealthy. It's my understanding that some children won't latch covered which is far removed from making some sort of "you go girl" statement.
Perhaps that IS the ongoing debate? Though the thought of using a child to make some sort of a political or personal statement is repugnant to me it does happen (Look at some custody cases). Perhaps the ongoing aversion by some to public breastfeeding is not the act itself but the fact that the act is being used to further an agenda?

When my husband was deployed (on a MEU) he was eating lunch with a friend in some southeast asian country and he said a woman just pulled out her boob and started feeding her baby and him and his friend gave each other a look like they couldn't believe this woman was doing this. This made me so mad that they have no problem objectifying women through prostitution and pornography, but heaven forbid a woman use her breasts for their intended use.

This is funny. Honestly, the reason ppl don't understand is because they haven't breastfed a baby that cries 8+ times a day for food. Should we stay inside our homes all day because our babies want to eat? I use a cover, but women who don't shouldn't be judged. I wish i wasn't so scared to be exposed because it would be a whole lot easier to just whip the boob out. lol.. Especially in the first few weeks when the baby doesn't just latch on!! @angerdux8 I understand that, but have you ever tried to cover a baby over the age of 4 months? as soon as they develop the ability to pull a blanket off their head, they will do it. I'm not going to take out my breast and chase anyone around or sit there with it just hanging out when the baby isn't eating, but I'm not going to tuck myself and my baby into a dark corner and hide. I'm not going to intentionally expose myself, but I'm not going to make myself incomfortable either.

I will find a comfortable (preferably quiet) spot to sit, get my baby ready to eat, I wear nursing tops, so very little is actually out of my shirt anyway, and as soon as the baby is latched on I also tuck my shirt around the babys mouth so even less is showing... but thats what I'm comfortable doing. If the women around me have an issue with their husband seeing a breast, I'd suggest those women talk to their husbands, not me... I'm not doing it for attention, I'm just feeding my baby. Thanks

I've had ppl come up to me & say "oh, sweet, he's sleeping", then realize that, no he's eating, when he turns to see. They had no idea until they were within 3 feet of us. nursing tops are great, they allow a very small amount of breast to be out, just enough for my son to eat, & not enough for ppl to see. if you're uncomfortable, thats your issue, not mine or the managers. @JCossar1 Actually those nursing tops are great and make it so you dont have to cover the baby up but allows for some modesty. I wish I couldve breastfed both my kids. I did express my breastmilk for my son when he was born 3 months premature for the nurses to give to him via his feeding tube which they enhanced with extra vitamins he needed to grow so in a way he did breastfeed and I think it was a big part of why he did so well being born SO early!

My daughter though I wasnt able to breastfeed sadly. I tried for almost a week but she had a problem latching on and I was offered NO help what so ever to make a good go of it. On top of things I had had a C section and was unable to sit up for nearly 48 hrs due to pre-eclamsia issues. I applaud those of you that are able to breastfeed! Dont let anyone make you feel bad for doing it...even in a store.

The whole breastfeeding in public issue can really go either way, at least for me. I get that it's a natural thing, it makes perfect sense. But many things can be backed up by saying that, like urinating in public or having sex in public. I personally don't think that natural-ness of breastfeeding is necessarily a good argument because of that. It's also the fact that just because a woman is breastfeeding, doesn't make breasts a non-sexual part of the body to others.

As a woman I don't have a problem seeing other women breast feed. I will be breast feeding mine when it is born. But, I would not do it in a close public area or in front of any men other than my husband for the simple reason that MEN DO NOT THINK LIKE WE WOMEN. They are far more highly sexual beings and you only need to read some of the comments from men on youtube with breast feeding to see their thoughts. I've seen more women respond inappropriately to breastfeeding as a man is more likely to be embarrassed by it than anything else. Thankfully I've had many good male friends who have spoken openly of how as you say, they do find it embarrassing because like you they find it hard to disassociate the sexual side of it. I think it's fair to say there needs to be respect but both ways, women can be discreet if they choose.

I think breast feeding is the best, it's natural. But I think it's fair that women also attempt to show some discreetness, there is no harm in turning a chair around or lightly covering yourself with a blanket. There's a video on this site of a woman, who is still breastfeeding an 8 year old, has made the act of breastfeeding into some sort of mythos or matriarchal worship which is not only sick but wholly unhealthy. It's my understanding that some children won't latch covered which is far removed from making some sort of "you go girl" statement.

When my husband was deployed (on a MEU) he was eating lunch with a friend in some southeast asian country and he said a woman just pulled out her boob and started feeding her baby and him and his friend gave each other a look like they couldn't believe this woman was doing this. @TheRuindragon Please go to the store right now and buy a weeks worth of baby food you know like 5 jars a day; then when your done with that find someone that is educated to tell you how much that is a year!!

@lucaslover182 Hmm. A Jar of baby food. One couldnt be more than a dollar. And buying in bulk saves money. So lets say you need to spend 5 dollars on baby food a day. Are you telling me that you cant afford to spend 5$ in food for an entire day while the average cafeteria lunch costs 3 dollars? Are you homeless?!

@TheRuindragon ok so i have no idea if ur male or female but dont males explicit women making breast a sexual thing instead of what they were meant for: to feed their children. how can it be repulsive to feed a child yet its ok for males to look touch and feel a woman's breast? also i get that there are people out there in the world starving so couldnt the mother who breast feed save other ppls lives by breastfeeding because she saves the solid foods for those who need it more?
