  • Unfortunately Americans aren't very friendly, because a lot of people cannot be trusted. We afraid to get close to people, no matter who they are, because we are afraid that people are out to get us. When we let our guard down we get conned or mugged.

  • Think before you speak. I was born in Bangkok, lived in Malaysia, Indonesia, and China, for 4 years until moving to the states. My mother is half Thai, my father is from the UK and works in Hong Kong where he manages a hotel and teaches at a university. I have family members living in Hong Kong, the UK, Luxembourg, Dubai, and Thailand. I regularly travel to China annually. Umm, let's not go there with the "dumb ass american" stereotype. That statement proves your ignorance. Idiot.

  • @ashtonmadhatter dude i live in the u.s.a but im originally from Botswana Africa and i hate it here in u.s.a i prefer my home land than this rubbish dump of a country..........

  • @isaacconstractor i didnt know that! Hey dont be so mean. Not everyone knows what u know

  • @mslovemrwood BLAME IT ON WESTERN MEDIA THAT DEPICTS AN AFRICA THAT IS FULL OF POVERTY AND DEPICTS AN AFRICA WHERE PEOPLE ALLEGEDLY LIVE IN THE BUSH(FOREST) AND HUNT ANIMALS........ AFRICA IS VERY MODERN, MILLIONS OF PEOPLE LIVE IN BIG CITIES IN DIFFERENT COUNTRIES IN AFRICA, YES THERE IS HUNGER AND POVERTY BUT NOT LIKE HOW YOU SEE IT ON T.V THERE ARE MANY HOMELESS POOR HUNGRY PEOPLE WHO LIVE IN POOR IMPOVERISHED PLACES IN U.S.A BUT THEY WONT SHOW IT IN T.V ONLY THE ''HOLLYWOOD GLAMOR''

  • Do people not realize English is one of the hardest languages to learn. These guys are smart.

  • @sambam2694 It's actually one of the easiest, clearly you've never studied another.

  • what was the name of that movie where 4 africans came to america and were hosted in different states? one host family was in california, another in NY? It might have been on discovery channel...

  • here's something i don't get about Americans, they are so concerned with getting laid and offer advice on how to get laid, but the thing is the average American has far less sex than the Average European, and they rarely feel the "need" to offer advice on something so basic, what is it with America and their bullshit, LOL.

  • Americans are founded on beliefs on individualism and self-identity. There is little sense of community. That is beacause Americans are all different. No longer are all Americans white. Now, they're hispanic, black, asian, etc. In Sudan, everyone is black, in that way, they have a much stronger sense of community because of that. Example, Irish people have a strong sense of community because all of the people are of the same descent. That isn't the cam in the US, we're all SO different!

  • @ashtonmadhatter dude you are fucked up there are white people indian people brittish people who live in africa the whole of africa is not black my parents are from india but i was born in africa dumb ass american

  • Comment removed

  • Actually I feel that both parties are at fault here. The boy in the video makes it a point to say "They are too different". So he doesn't even ask? He just assumes because Americans do things different ways, that we must all be racist jerks. However, Americans should be more sensitive to foreigners who seem confused, don't just assume they know, ask if they are having a hard time. Seems to me that people are just people.

  • What Americans seem to forget is that 99% of them are not american, but a refugee of some sort

  • are all americans like that? well thats disappointed me a lot. i love america. really really love. i mean they got apple, adidas, california, hollywood, new york, harvard, disney, six flags, florida, aquatica, like everything. but i just have no idea why they didnt talk to each other, even though they are neighbours. i mean how can people live alone?!

  • @mslovemrwood are you that stupid ADIDAS IS A GERMAN COMPANY NOT AN AMERICAN COMPANY

  • @mslovemrwood Sadly...many of them are way worse. I've lived here long enough to learn that.

  • please vote for my essay, is for a good cause and does not take even a minute

    ww w . nextstoplondon . org/ readessay/ 794 (all together)

  • I am American and watching this documentary made me so sad and disappointed...to see people come to our country and get treated so badly...if you watch the end of the documentary you will see that many actually become pretty successful. It definitely opened my eyes quite a bit, this scene really makes me sad because everyone in America is so afraid of people, when most people are so nice. There is a scene where someone calls the police on them just because they were walking in a large group.

  • @KATOMATE01 why american so afraid of people?

  • We as americans still call ourselves americans, but we have just adopted what is around us and accepted it. Everything is superficial, we're not americans. We come up with "santa clause" and take it away from the birth of christ. Those people in Africa live in the raw, as I like to call it. We almost look at them like they're not human. God Bless my brothers in africa, and it is a shame, that we live such self centered lives.

  • this is from "God Grew Tired Of Us"

  • Haha this is so true and funny. But the Africans need to adapt to our culture and understand its not actually a "great shame" its just different. Also if they go to a black neighborhood in the USA in the ghetto they better watch out they REALLY SHOULD NOT talk to ANYONE there or they will get mugged or robbed. Its not just white people who act unfriendly in the USA.

  • People who think they are on the top are actually the most stupid and easiest to mess with type of people. All you have to do is finding their weakness through their arrogance and take advantage of it ( only insecure people need to create an illusion of superiority to convince themself that they are strong ) .

  • It's funny how most of the comments on this video not only prove these guys right, but display WHY people are so harsh to him- you're all a bunch of bloody racists. Soft-minded, beer-guzzling, gun-hoarding supremacist hicks, and we're supposed to be okay with it because apparently it's "PC" to speak up against it.

I don't WANT these guys to have to go back to Sudan just because of your dumbass "my way or the highway" nationalist bullshit, you antisocial fucks. Get your act together.

  • There are many other countries in the world that are much worse. I have heard that Americans are to friendly and it annoys some other cultures. In places like Russia, Germany, and Finland people will think you are weird for smiling in public. Many times in grocery stores a random stranger will just start talking to you as well as other places. Either way, every culture is different doesn't make one right or wrong or one better than the other. You just have to accept it the way it is or leave.

  • we live in a very secular and materialistic usa with Santa Claus and insecurities.

  • An individual needs 2 communicate wit others 2 fully understand one another. People from all over the world cannot live a life w/o communicating. No matter who u r, u will always have 2 come out from ur world & accept that some ppl aren't that friendly. So wat now? will u stay away 4rom Americans or r u going 2 reach out 2 these ppl & make em understand who u r as well as 2 y u've reach 2 this wonderful & lifelike nation called AMERICA? wat is their purpose 2 come here?

  • America is a place where Home Owners' Associations can put you in jail for a day for not watering your front yard: not abiding their regulations so as to maintain property values. America is also a place where people whom don't know you at all will read your story in the newspaper, post your bail for you and offer to keep your lawn watered. We want 2B friendly but we are made afraid of each other by the media. Smile, nod, wave hello, don't litter, help others. This is what heals neighborhoods.

  • Well africa has highest crime rate in the world

    im from korea

  • still think africa is less civilized?

  • this man, has a clear mind and nobody can say he hasn´t right

  • That dude at the end is a philosopher.

I clicked FAVOURITE just because of what he said.

  • What they it's partly true and partly not true. We can't generalize. There's a bunch of people like that in the States, going on their own, locked in their houses, their lives, their jobs, their everything. An unknown man is just a suspect in their lives. It's a very individualistic perspective of living. But there's also people who talk to you, who will open their house.

  • @JoseProkof This is true! Life is too short to let the hermits starve the joy of life out of you by way of attrition. Move on to those who will lift you up.

  • If they hate the US so much, and are so unhappy here, I hope they feel free to take a plane back to whatever war-torn hellhole in Africa they came from.

  • @osallent He is feeling sorry for the richest nation on the planet that doesn't value kindness between neighbors anymore. Hate is really love, anyway, love for something/some one to be something that we don't want them to be. Exp.: I hate L.A.'s lack of public transportation = I love L.A. too much to see everyone burdened by DMV, insurance, gas, traffic, tickets, road rage, fatal crashes, DUI's, etc. I'm from Redondo Beach so I know 1st hand. All that Sudanese man should do is keep on smiling.

  • If your saying Americans aren't friendly, then you're pretty much saying the whole world isn't friendly.

  • they are so cute:)

  • Totally Agree.

Canada so called "Multi cultured country" is THE # 1 RACIST country.

  • @CanLanka LOL LOL totally Agree ur point on CANADA!!!! it's actually even wrose than the US.

  • @xxxxjojoxxxx09 lol ur an idiot a person with a different culture didnt coheer to your culture so they are the asshole hmm sounds like ur cultures just one to make others out as assholes :o

  • @elephantmaniac Hey. Hi. Thanks for the insight. It's great to get your perspective. So basing on your take, I guess it is true that west-coast culture is more hospitable, social and friendly. I've actually been seriously thinking about making the shift because I really enjoy that kind of atmosphere and approachability.

  • Utter rubbish - portraying Africa as a perfect friendly continent - we all know how many people get murdered every day in Africa over religion, beliefs, land, power and corruption. I am from Brazil, over here you can ask anyone for directions and people will 'usually' be or try to be helpful but that doesn't mean people are friendly or helpful cos I know first hand wot it is like to live in a violent society -

  • strange is scary here, sad but true, hopefully diversity will take its course and bring love to every one.

  • It's because they have been brain washed not to talk with strangers from early childhood.

  • Its because they have been brain washed not to talk with strangers from early childhood.

  • This is a great video and illustrates a lot of key things. I live in D.C. now and so often you say hi to someone and the instictive reaction is that the other person wonders why you're saying hi to them or they frown as if saying hi isn't a good thing to do.

Common courtesy and just being social and approachable are really tough to find in the U.S. It is a "great shame" as the guy said.

  • If you think Americans treat foreigners badly....

    Try living in Japan...

  • @Glop1298 lol in Japan they have the wierdest most old-fashion ass way that prevents you from becoming a citizen. My brother was BORN there, yet he is not eligible.

  • @xxxxjojoxxxx09

Ouch, you missed your point, and your shortbus.

  • well... why dont u just GO BACK to Sudan .............. and hijack some ships.... assholes.... try to appreciate what US has to offer... and lastly, i have met many ppl for US and got heaps of US friends... most of them are very friendly

  • @samihasib I love how to be racist to those sweethearts in this clip you actually had to dig for the most REMOTE reference to their native country. "Hijack some SHIPS!" God help us if they wanted to find something people from our country have done to degrade us with.

  • @samihasib Yeah, because you're just OOZING with friendliness. Racist American hick. You ought to be ashamed, spitting in their eye like that after they reached their hand out in friendship.

Go spread "democracy" in the middle east and take equal rights away from homosexuals, you three-ton, beer-swilling, gun-toting hillbilly imbecile.

  • Cultural Shock - Pink Panther - " I Would like to buy a Hamburger"

While in states do as the Romans do.

  • I hate that Americans feel like we owe them something. I am Mexican-American, and they always call me a spic. I am going to college and this guy was like are you an international student? I was like no, he said "well what the fuck are you doing here? You should be washing clothes, or working in the fields"

Americans always think they're on top, but one day the world is going to crash and then, i want to see if they don't need us the minorities...

  • @j3r3zana16 if u think that get out of america.... ur just saying i hate america but i live here and thats kinda dumb

  • @danny32602

See your fucking stupid. I am not getting out of America, you guys should start respecting minorites, you shouldn't judge somebody because of their nationality. GET A class of history or geography!

  • @j3r3zana16

Don't assume all of us are like that idiot just because he said something to you.

  • @j3r3zana16 Well I hope u knocked that guy the fuck out. Maybee he goin think before he speaks.

  • @j3r3zana16 I love how everyone's making excuses for the racist prick who went off on this guy. And by "love," I mean I want to find each of these people and knock them off their shit. You have every right under the sun to be here, my friend. Good luck to you at school, and don't give these racist fucks a millisecond of your time.

They're loathsome people anyway. You can't be a racist fuck unless you're loathsome.

  • @j3r3zana16 damn that is some insane racism. where do you live? nyc is nothing like that lol

  • @j3r3zana16 well said

  • @j3r3zana16

wait-- i think you're talking about white people. hehehehe. I am asian, certainly American. But it's those white americans (Not alll...) with that attitude. But i can also say that there are some minorities who think the world owe them a living too. At my work, I find that the socioeconomically rich, the ghetto minorities (blacks, asians, latinos and such) sometimes act "hard" and its as if I owe them a shit load more respect because they've been treated poorly in the past.

  • @j3r3zana16 thing is, america only became big because it was robbing resources of africa. They are still doing it actually, Everyone knows that but noone is talking about it.

You can always say "thats the government, but not the people, you cant be mad at americans in general" Yet still, there are so many americans with such incredibly stupid "patriotic" arrogance(superiority complex) it makes me sick.Kind of funny on the other hand, since they already belong almost entirely to the chinese.

  • @BWAlucarD china has 1.1 trillion dollars in bonds of the us goverment considering that US gdp is 13trillion you can hardly say US belongs to china especially because its just money not shares in companies or property of any kind.while amerika has huge investments in china from computers, mobiles, autoindustry, movies, casinos(the bigest in the world),clothing and now 2 disneyworlds.Amerika became great because unlike africans amerikans dont kill each other like animals over etnicity, but are united

  • @globejack Ok, @bonds, yet still, the growing dependency on china is undeniable. About the african thing.. the US is united, thats true, yet still, america also became gread, BECAUSE africans are killing each other. America keeps them low, if a dictator becomes unwilling to cooperate, he'll get replaced etc, we all know the drill. Only that way, the US can feed off africa almost for free.

  • I live on a small christian island full of fortifications because african muslim invaders attacked us all the time. So africans are no better than US or EU or china as far as exploiting others weekness, its africans job to care for there people not foreign mining companies.you keep repeating that US feeds of africa for free have you got any figures or your just making it up to excuse the backwardness of african continent

  • @globejack sorry I thought this is common knowledge. I shouldn't have said "America", I didn't mean the american people, I mean the US government. They are supporting dictators, if the US gets their trading agreements in return. The more democratic they get, the worse for US economy. Its very sad to hear that you have problems with fanatics down there, I still hope, you'll never get racist or something because of this. Religion and no education is always a dangerous mix.

  • @BWAlucarD as far as i know US imposed arms embargo on sudan wich china didnt respect,it placed embargo on blood diamonds which china didnt repect.china openely claims it practices a non interference policy in africa, that is it does buisness with dictators without expecting democratic reforms

  • @globejack well at least they are honest lol :X kind of like the russians. If they want to invade another country for example, they just do it and don't make up some lies to justify it. ("they have nukes, we need to invade now!" etc). On the other hand, the more democratic the country is and the more the people there look caucasian, the more they get supported by western countries. Do you hear me Iranians? You NEED to look caucasian as soon as possible :P

  • @j3r3zana16 I have 1 thing to say !! Come to europe !! America sucks !! Women are ugly !! Idiots think that they are smart !! and they only thing they know is :Fuck we are americans we are the best !! Althought europe has MUCHHHHHHHH more beautifull women and the smart and the stupid :) are as equals !! we dont make difference betwen people !!

  • Also in America you are taught to watch your back and don't trust anyone. So no one is going to be friendly out the blue. It's an individualistic culture, survival of the fittest. There is no such thing as the "fellow man" unless you know the person really well or related.

  • Real talk. These niggas are just too black for people to be friendly to them. Super darkskin looks like you might rob someone. They lack social norms. You can't just be parlaying on a commercial sidewalk. That's a habit of poor people. If you need help hit up a gas station.

Most important: wash yourselves thoroughly. Lot of Africans stank and smell like hot doo doo. Major turn off.

  • @catonic you are an ignorant idiot. Get an education.

  • You're a dumbass and only said I'm a idiot cause speaking the truth and had nothing of substance to say. Are you african? Have you been around Africans? I have an education but what does talking about Africans lounging on steps have to do with education?

  • wow this is good.

  • Sounds like Sudan is more civilized than the US :-D

  • Be strong men

  • Well, you can STAY in your Africa and - no problems! Bloody savages!

  • white people think that dark coloured people are not good..

But we dark coloured people are best i recon..Because we believe in one God and we have one father.

  • I don't know where you are in the U.S, but most of the people in my neighborhood would gladly help you out if you needed directions. Or they would just say hello.

  • aww how cute. I feel sorry for them. Maybe starting out at a place with more African Americans like Los Angeles, CA or Georgia. It might help in the beginning more.

  • That was sad...

  • Well, you can make that excuse, but I think the real problem is we are a huge country of trust issues and have very little trust for out fellow man. A major reason for this is that we are told from a very young age that everyone is a competitor rather than a member within our society which is total bunk. A society has always accomplished more working together rather than trying to outdo one another, it's more of a control tactic than it is an actual working method of thinking.

  • @Cordantheman wrong :o, society works best when competing thats why in wars thats the greatest time of scientific expansion

  • and you dont have that in america

  • @sassy8girl haha thats right...well yeah, but in africa is way worse. 90% of sothafrican women have been raped and i dont think 90% of "american" women have been raped. no tribal wars in the US either...well, u know what i mean

  • tribal wars sounds a bit like gang wars no country is perfect. it might not be 90% in the states but it is still a pretty high number

  • @sassy8girl a high number? what number exaclty? have u lived in african countries and in the US? i have,,,,

  • 1:32 sounds like if theyre swearing in korean

  • i want to say that as an immigrant myself, I find it most insensitive for anyone to say that 'do as Romans do'. Well, you will never be a 'Roman' just by definition. You might become that on paper but hey, discrimination and ignorance are out there and the guy in the video has a valid critique of Western culture: impoverished interpersonal communications. Moreover, coming to a country as a refugee or an immigrant is different from just traveling some place for a couple days/weeks!

  • "Thanks' to colonization many countries have adopted French, Portuguese, English& even Spanish (Equatorial Guinea) as their bureaucratic languages and are therefore diglossic and actually, I betcha, you will find the most polyglots in Africa just cuz of the way borders were drawn and the folks from different tribes intermarrying. It's quite common for people to have a mother who speaks one language, father another, in school you learn a third and when you go to the market a forth is spoken.

  • do as romans do is a very old saying i mean once u immigrate to a new place please dont impose your lifestyle or your ways as its wrong to do so as u immigrated to a new place the place didnt immigrate to u i have been to sudan and frankly had not the best or worst experience so when u immigrate take up the new culture as your own other wise leave it and go back to your heaven

  • But I mean the point about people not interacting with each other, that's very true. Because I'm pretty sure even European society was not always like that. Before people interacted alot with each other. But now our lives have become so saturated and hectic that we've lost the ability to connect. We have the TV and internet now, what's the point of going out and meeting new people?

  • he is not stating that he wants anyone to change. He is simple noting the differences between the two cultures. NO ONE is trying to impose anything except you. America is a land made up of immigrants that all have brought their ways of life with them to add to the diversity this nation is made up of. I believe what this young Sudanese man is saying is he has his work cut out for him in order to adjust. This is his understanding of "who" Americans are. Unfriendly people you cannot just approach.

  • but that's not what columbus did or magellan.

  • Its not that people are not friendly. They are just not friendly to you. Don't mind me saying so but if you were from Eastern France or Northern England, you would probably find lots of people being friendly and asking you questions like "where is that accent from".Bottom line,in America, trust is race based. Your own race might mingle with you, so go find some brothers, thats your best bet. I am not implying racism in any way. Love America, but truth, like they say is always hard to DIGEST -Richy

  • it depends on which state your in.

  • I think if they went a libral college town they have had beeter results if they went to a intentional community.... Some places in the south our friends... Ohio people our not very friendly... I been todl tihs so many peope from other countries that, Amewricans our not friendly...

  • It really depends on where you go in America as to how friendly people are. From personal experience the frienliest regions are the mid south, mid west, and far north. If a town is too small then the people are usually afraid of strangers, where if you go to a big city then you do not stand out and people will ignore you. To find friendly people you need to find a town or city no smaller than 9,000 people but no bigger than 100,000. Thats just my experience with traveling and moving around.

  • wat the hell? i thought americans were freindly ... there must be something wrong with me.....

  • depends on the American. We're mostly a mixing pot of everyone's culture, and sometimes u have to ask for someone to notice u. The man in the video is from Africa, which is kinda known for not being very good at being on time, in America every one HAS to be on time. You can still find people who will stop 4 you though, i did a scavvenger hunt once and whent up 2 people saying " Can i take ur pic while dancing?" or " Do you have a tattoo?" no one turned us away (except people w/ out tattoos) lol

  • interesting, wish i knew the name of the docu

  • been15...

    Shut the fuck up

  • it's really weird listening to him saying that americans aren't friendly.

Americans are friendly... just not to all types of people. While most americans aren't racists... your skin color doesn't make it any easier for a cordial conversation. African americans are well aware of this.

If you ask, someone will most likely respond, but don't go knocking on somebody's door and ask for directions. Be informed of the cultural norms before you visit a country or state.

  • Thanks for uploading this. I really enjoyed watching it.

  • How do they know english so well if they are completely alien to western culture?

Also the "not friendly to stranger" issue is just a product of urbanization, not a western or American issue.

  • Because as a result of English Colonial rule over much of Africa in the past, English is well established, and spoken by many people. Within African nations there are often many languages, so English (of French in other African countries) have become the common, intermediary language. The fact that they speak English doesn't mean they have any knowledge of western culture at all. They learnt it in Africa, by Africans, and its used in Africa. Isn't this common knowledge?

  • I was under the impression that only educated people in Africa knew English. I know its the official language in many countries but I didn't know it was widely spoken among the general public. I will read up on the subject.

  • Sorry, I dont want to sound like i'm saying everyone speaks English, that's not the case. Many people due to lack of any education (as you mentioned) will not. But enough speak English that it's not surprising these guys can. The guys in this video may have had a good education, becoming refugees when forced out of their homes or off their land by rebel groups. There's no way to know what their background is, but English language ability definitely does not indicate knowledge of western culture.

  • But being educated will inevitably expose you to western culture, that's why I'm perplexed that these people are not aware of the basics of western society.

  • Even if they were exposed to it a bit, its still totally different seeing it in reality. I studied Japanese and Japanese culture for 4.5 years. Then I went and lived in Japan and was totally blown away by everything! Even if they were exposed to someone from the west, or were told about aspects of western culture, thats far different to experiencing it, and would not lessen the sense of foreignness of it when they arrived. I know that only too well

  • American, and other western societies may have a-not-so-approachable attitude, but that is one the prices one have to pay for wealthiness.

In african countries one does not have anything they call "important business", and can take time to everyone, this also results to poor countries, like Sudan. And I can't say I envy the violence they have in many african countries.

  • what is this from. I have to see more.

  • It was a PBS show. I can't remember the exact title of the show since I caught it by chance while channel surfing

  • @deeders05 Its from a documentary called "God grew tired of us" that dealing with the war in Sudan about the lost boys of Sudan who are orphans.

  • @deeders05 Its called lost boys of the sudan, its a movie

  • @deeders05 it's called 'god grew tired of us'

    it's amazing

  • I love this video! I agree, Americans, especially the baby boomer conservatives can be ignorant & close minded. Tasteless, dull, not warm nor hospitable weird people that can be very stereotypical and judgmental.

  • Good stuff. Nothing universally true, but something to certainly consider. I know I am generally not very trusting of strangers, but I will talk to them. Most likely that shows in my body language, so most will never try to speak to me.

I try to make eye contact and give people a smile at least. See if they have something to say.

  • Also in the USA, people don't just sit on sidewalks or random places..They would sit on benches or the edges of a surface that is around the same height of a bench. So grown men sitting on sidewalks would be intimidating for some Americans because you only do that if you're homeless or ill...any other time Americans are on the ground is at the beach or park or camp, but then you have to bring a towel or sleeping bag to be "normal."

  • africans and guys from the middle east do tend to sit places and do nothing for hours.

  • Americans value individualism and ownership of property...Most cultures around the world value community and community sharing. Just a culture shock. Neither position is correct..it is all a matter of perspective. The Western world tend to say Leave the "nest" and stand on your own feet. But in Asia/Latin America/Africa they tend to believe that individual pursuit of happiness is selfish or less meaningful than a group effort.

  • @lea210

    Thank you :D

  • VERY GOOD VID

  • race transcends cultural barriers. culture transcends race barriers. vice versa. only you can decide which of these barriers are the PROBLEM. is it RACE the problem or is it CULTURAL differences the problem. you decide.

  • we love O.B.!

  • Really interesting. Is this part of a larger documentary? Being from the U.S. but living outside of it has been helpful in seeing my own country better.

  • great movie. very moving and emotional

  • vbc

  • the point of this video: Americans are stupid

  • Excellent video. Very thought-provoking.

  • I thought there was a long legged bitch somewhere in this video. =<)

  • Answer: Santa Clause is *NOT* connected with Jesus Christ in any way.

  • well, they both have lots of myths associated with them, they both take a measure of gullibility to believe in.

  • these guys are just in the wrong part of the country. where are they NYC? most of america is much more hospitable, you just have to get out of the cities and into smaller towns.
