I remeber sitting with my brother smoking a doobie when he first bought the Arc of a diver album, playing this song over and over, ahhh to be young and full of silly dreams again :)
how the endless road unwinds you ... ..... and how a song and its lyrics can always snap you back into a blue, blue day, when it leapt from the radio and bit deep into your soul
That was the year my friend and I both met our future wives and we both came to the same conclusions after hearing this song. I'm happy I took that chance.
This song reminds me of when I was in college takes me back walking up and down Mass. St. on Saturday night. I wouldn't want to go back to those years, lots of memories, good times, had lots of fun, but I'm secure in my stability. Life goes on, Thanks youtube.
On this date in 1981 {Feb. 7th} "While You See A Chance" entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 charts; eventually it would peak at No. 7 and spent a total of 18 in the Top 100...
It was No. 68 on Billboard's Year-End Hot 100 singles of 1981 chart...
IF WE DONT TAKE A CHANCE AT WHAT WE REALLY WANT, WE LOSE AND WELL ALWAYS REGRET IT..I KNOW THAT FOR MORE THAN A FACT IN THE LAST 2 OR SO YEARS ON THE FEMALE SEARCH..DAMN....TOO MUCH LOSS, REGRET, TEARS AND SOMETIMES READY TO GIVE UP, BUT CANT...AS QUEEN SAID, THE SHOW MUST GO ON..AND IT WILL, EVEN AFTER THE LAST LOSS, KITTY..DAMN....THANX HONEY FOR THE CONFIDENCE I HAVE NEVER HAD..EVEN IN LOSS, I WON, IN A WEIRD WAY....HAPPY HOLIDAY..LOVE U AND NEVER WILL FORGET U.X0..
this brings back memories of my mother when i was younger. She had passed away september 30 of this year. When we would we would hear this song we would dance together.
Hello again . . . I was referring to your memories. It must bring back lovely memories of your Mother and the time you shared with her, but I imagine the sadness you feel at the same time . . . Chris.
This single edit doesn't work because on the original album version, the synth solo comes in after he sings the 2nd verse which is not present on the single cut. This is why you hear him singing "be" from that verse the moment the song abruptly jump-cuts from the bridge verse to the synth solo.
What I am talking about is: after the bridge, on the album cut he again sings: "Stand up in a clear blue morning/Until you see what can be/Alone on a cold day dawning/Are you still free/Can it be?"
On the single edit, as I said before, the edit is full of rough edges that weren't (or couldn't be) sanded down, which explains why I can still hear the "be" from "Can it be?" when the synth solo comes in.
@ClassicTVMan1981X I know - and there's that missing "When there's no-one left to lead you / even you don't quite believe you / that's when nothing can deceive you" coda, which was always my favourite line from the song but missing from the filmclip version. Full version:begins at 3:12
steve is the real deal, so much class and talent displayed here , i used to play this all the time preparing ground for sowing the wheat and barley back home , i still love it today maybe even more so
While the music is great, people overlook the content of this video and the fact that such a prominent personality had no problem with pushing it. With some of the greatest music, at what seems to be the pinnacle of the evolution of rock, people overlooked the message in song and video conten. There is no need to shake our heads in wonder at the current state of rock, or things in general, we where warned WELL in advance and chose to ignore those warnings, now crying is all most can muster.
this song has been in head for years...along with gerry rafertys baker street....elusive songs, that have that memory inducing effect. I remember what I was doing when I heard it quality. Id turn on the radio and scan the stations, and if i was lucky id catch the last half of it, never the beginning...lol... ty Mr.Winwood providing the soundtrack for such vivid recollections...3:/`
So what is all this? I have been listening to this beautiful song since it first came out and I never imagined the video would look anything like this (first time I saw it was today). WTH? I always imagined something like Steve driving down the road in a nice open convertable, sunshiny images of people moving through well-lit, open spaces, positive things. Blood running down the screen, black lines stabbing ninja-people in the head as they struggle to climb pyramids... Whatever Steve.
@dlh60 No, I'm talking female backing vocals. On the winwood clapton tour they brought 2 female backing vocals to europe. It was the best version i'd ever heard of this song.
As much as I love this song, this shortened version kind of annoys me. You can still hear the trail end of Steve singing "beeeee?" right at the splice.
THATS WHAT I HAVE FOUND MYSELF DOING THE LAST 2 YRS TRYING TO MEET MS RIGHT..SOMETIMES WE WIN, SOMETIMES WE LOSE..KEEP ON TRYING...THE HEARTBREAK SUCKS BUT IT DOES MAKE US STRONGER...THANX TO THE SPECIAL LADIES THAT IVE TAKEN THAT CHANCE WITH, HAVE NOT WON, BUT THAT MUCH CLOSER TO MY DESTINATION....ITS ALL A LEARNING EXPERIENCE FOR SURE ..AND MAYBE LEARN TO STAY SINGLE, BUT THATS NOT FOR ME...WISH ME LUCK...THE SHOW MUST GO ON, queen...WE HAVE NO OTHER CHOICE...pete. long island....
This song and a very patient and kind-hearted DJ saved my life. I heard this song at the same time each day with a message from the DJ to listen hard, listen good and take that chance. I am hear today because I finally saw that chance and took it...thank you Steve for writing and recording this song.
@goodster8271 that means your an idiot. You care more about being the 1st @ something so stupid then coming here and supporting Winwood. You're a Child.
Arc of the Diver was one of the ten most important albums to define early 80s culture. It was also a touchstone in the career and art of Steve Winwood. It's significance cannot be understated.
The clear and define messages of the songs. The upbeat optimism of its lyrics and the work and care that went into this very video (pre-MTV!) were all signals of a new decade and generation.

if you see a chance take it? I did early and often on the strength of (and backdrop) of this song. What it is about a high tenor voice that so electrifies us listeners? love his voice then and now, incomparable
The songs from the 80's were always so individually unique and creative.. today everything sounds the same, and catchy songs have lyrics that sound like they came from a 5 year old. I miss the sound of the 80's. :( I was just a little guy... but still.
@GeneralHoohah You got that right, they even ripped off "Valerie" added a few sluty hoes to a Video and regarded it as a musical creation of their fools generation.
@kryckeestrooff Oh gawd... I'm so sick of newer bands redoing 80's songs... all they do is completely ruin the song. They're all doing it, and its pissing me off. Last time I heard that shit, I was so pissed off I turned off my car radio and didn't listen to it again for several days. These people should be dragged out into the street and shot like dogs.
@GeneralHoohah I understand you but each era has it own music style, I must say i don't like the present music but maybe we can change it by actively do something then just sit and hunger with nostalgia to the old styles
@LLdude1 What happened is this. Music companies finally figured out how to really target teens, tweens, and preteens with poorly written, shallow, shitty music. They don't know the difference, they're kids! So they scream and rage till they get their music, then listen to it over and over. They end up being RAISED on this crap, thinking THAT is real music and it's NOT! So as adults they have lower expectations and shitty music sells better. Record companies and parents are to blame!!!
@GeneralHoohah The 80s were definitely some kind of golden period for musical creativity. One possible reason for the lack of great music today is that illegal downloading etc means that it far harder to make a decent living off music. For all we know, this century's Paul McCartney could be working as an accountant instead of producing music.
