It is wonderful to see a Lutheran church that is entering in and worshiping the Lord. Lifting their hands in praise to God waving banners to Jesus is a wonderful and see. I grew up Lutheran and now am an Assemblies of God minister, I believe more Lutheran churches need to become this way and I've even seen some AG churches that need this kind of excitement as well. This song points to the great purpose of the church, lifting high the cross so that the great commission will be fulfilled.
this is an AFLC (Association of Free Lutheran Congregations) parish. They were in the ALC (American Lutheran Church), before they left the ELCA some years back, due to differences with the "liberal" drift of the ELCA. Their pastor, Chuck Sampson, is a former ELCA pastor who left because of those "liberal" theological issues. Newark is a liturgical and Biblical congregation, a little charismatic mixed in with the traditional liturgy and hymns.
Beautiful Hymn, done well, by the way. Flags are a HUGE distraction to it though. I just turned off my monitor, listened to the wonderful Hymn, and it was much more enjoyable and meaningful than the distraction going on by the ever-gyrating flags. Great Hymn! Just turn the monitor off and enjoy the sounds!
Luther wouldn't recognize much of what has become of the 34,000+ denominations nowadays......which brings to mind a question: "Where in Scripture did it give anyone the right to go build their own church?" Who gave the authority in Scripture to go form their own church?" Easy answer: Nowhere in Sacred Scripture does it give any man the right to go and build, found, or formulate his own church. Why are there over 34,000 denominations? Haven't they all done this? Luther begat this, sadly.
Where is the procession, the crucifer, a choir!?!?! I think I'd have to get up and leave if that kind of carrying on went down in my church. But, looking at the brighter side, there are worse things going on in liturgical churches these day.
Is this an ELCA church? I've been Lutheran (LCMS) for about 10 yrs. .... the place I go to is very liturgical (high church). I didn't realize Lutherans got so casual.
I think the flags are one way to praise God. Go into some non-liturgical churches and raising hands in praise is NORMAL. I come froma LOOOOONG line of Lutherans - and, believe me:), flag waving, and raising hands in praise - are spiritually HEALTHY ways to connect one's inner joy with outer worship. I think Martin Luther would be MUCH happier seeing flag waving than 12 page church bulletins with every move choreographed.
Thanks--I agree! No one should feel coerced to use a flag but given the several Scriptural references to flags and banners it's hard to understand those who would forbid them.
I'm confused by the flags too. I was a Lutheran organist for several years, and they wouldn't deign to hear a piano....let alone waive flags. Very nice folks...except for the pastor...oh well.
haha! i goto a Methodist church and you're so right. Litergical dance, waving flags, raising hands...however it's usually just during a procession..never seen it done thru an entire hymn.. that must be a lutheran twist :D
I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. I play the piano and organ. This past Sunday (June 29), we sang this as our closing hymn. It was the commemoration of Peter and Paul, Apostles. We also said farewell to our pastor, who accepted a call in the Florida-Bahamas Synod. Just thought I'd share.
Blessings to you and your congregation as you seek a new pastor! BTW, how far from Camden are you located? Years ago my uncle's family belonged to St. Timothy in Camden.
I do have a sad note. The pastor that left us for Florida was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in mid-August and died a month later. It was a shock to everyone. We ordained a new pastor on March 29. She is the first woman pastor that our parish has had. We had a husband/wife team in the '80's.

Nice expression during such a traditional style of worship, love it! I'm Catholic and we don't see this during our Masses. :D

That's about as ostentatious as a Lutheran will get. Flag waving. Why not? Celebrate and be glad!!!
