Joe Angel got a raw deal in San Francisco, but Jon being the good man he was brought him out to the City and then Joe got blown out after a few seasons. It was Joe's second time as a Giant radio announcer. Good luck Joe wherever you are.
Miller great, Angel annoying. Too game show host-y. Yeah, Angelos is a dickbag, fired both O's announcers after '96 who had been there forever (Miller and Mel Proctor). Miller didn't care, he go to go home to SF where he grew up. This must be after the horrendous '88 season (Angel talks about Brad Komminsk of the Indians going over the center field wall catching a HR).
Jon Miller is the best because he teaches you a little bit about baseball as he calls the game. Rather than prattling off a bunch of jargon, he explains what a wheel play is or why the defense is shaded toward right field. I learned a lot listening to him call Orioles games while working at Alaska Stands during the 1983 World Series season. That was the best.
I do a pretty mean Jon Miller impersonation right back at him.
Congrats to Chrome Dome on winning the Ford Frick award.
1989 was such a wonderful year for Oriole fans. The year before they lost over 100 games and to only be out of the AL East crown by 2 games at the end of the 89 season was an amazing acomplishment. The Orioles came out with a VHS documentry of the 1989 season "Why Not?!" and every Bird fan needs to watch that. Such a wonderful, magnificent fun year to be a Orioles fan.
according to things I've read on-line and I'm sure you and others have seen it as well, Jon wasn't much a "homer" for the Orioles in the mind of upper management and so they let him go after the 1996 season and then he went to the San Fransisco Giants in 1997, where he's been ever since. Jon and company did another good performance Sunday Night on ESPN. It was the close game between the Dodgers and the Padres. The Dodgers lost, shrinking their lead over the Rockies to 3 1/2 games.
I couldn't believe it, either. if it were radio I'd swear Jon was doing both voices but in a different pitch, but using the same speech pattern. i loved the impression of Vin Scully. I learned of Jon Miller from the ESPN games years ago and thought that was all that he did and then I learned he's been a broadcaster for major league baseball since 1978...

Great stuff. Miss Jon Miller and miss seeing the O's as a relevant force in the AL East. The Why Not O's of '89.

I like Joe Angel and Fred Manfra but Jon Miller was better than both of them.
